If you stocked your ponds with fish, you could plumb the ponds to water your garden beds with some of the most nutrient rich, biodiverse liquid gold you can find. It will make your plants even more resilient and fertilize your soil that much more 💚 Plus, it will close the loop on your farm that much more ☺️

If you take a long neck glass bottle and plant it with the neck sticking out of the soil it makes any noise echo in the bottle and runs any underground pests away. Make sure to mark the neck with a white rock or something so you don’t hit and break it.

A couple of ounces of cold-pressed orange oil (available on Amazon like, what isn't?!) mixed with a gallon of water, poured over the ant hill will eliminate fire ants. It might take a couple of treatments but it works and won't hurt the garden.

Put chickens on the ant piles. Promise they will take care of it. Definitely seen the dinosaur behavior, as the little monsters attack the hill. When you are planning the grass seed, my geese’s favorite food in their pasture area is clover, which gives them extra protein. Your idea of the fruit trees is great! However, it is a good idea to protect the young trees as geese can eat the bark. We have a small food forest so the geese can’t go in there. There are many plants that would be on their level. We don’t as yet have ducks but plan to grow turkeys in with the geese this year.
@tjeanvlogs9894
@tjeanvlogs9894 2 жыл бұрын
Broad leaf plants with the grasses. I plant pastures in a minimum of one broad leaf, a grass, a nitrogen fixer, that grow well in cold and warm weather, that tolerate wet and drought conditions. Yes that is 12 varieties. Then I add in a deep rooting and nutrient culmulater. I am in the maritime Pac NW, so the specific varieties probably won't work there even though we are in the same zone, but the base plan is a sound one. My pasture mix is 18 varieties. Regarding the birds and the trees, let them out first thing into the area, then go finish the rest of the morning chores before coming with their feed and "Nummies" buckets to lure them out of the area into their main yard. They will go for the bugs and slugs first, and the plants after the sun has been on them. So move them out after they've gotten the slugs but before they want the plants. Chickens scratching means they should only be cut loose in an established perennial area, but ducks and geese are fine after new plantings have had a few weeks to establish. This is a permaculture trick.

@@highroad3580 Interesting. I've always heard against clover. It's like the "junk food" of grasses. Cows love it too, but they have a hard time with moderation. Too much of it causes the gas. It could be a zone/climate thing as well. Now I'm interested in learning more on that.

I will be dealing with it in a week or two after this coming arctic blast rolls on through so it will be ready for my onions sets in April and green bean, and the plant starts that will be going in later when it is warmer. It will give me a bit of time to observe exactly where it is spreading to and from so it can be eliminated! Babies come when they are ready and usually not before.😊

I loved, “I’ll be an optimist and just throw them out”! That’s the right attitude to have when planting. Sometimes a weedy garden helps us when we’re starting new beds because we know that eventually the battle against the bermuda and weeds will be won (at least that happens here in Texas). Since you’re on a new homestead weeding that crop will be quite satisfying. Happy planting and planning Jess. I’m looking forward to watching your new homestead grow and thrive! Oh my gosh. I still have to plant my garlic too! 🤭 Life has been getting in the way of my garlic dreams! I too, live in zone 8. Except I'm in Texas. Funnily enough, I was just thinking about my garlic yesterday. I was half contemplating just cooking all my seed garlic. I'm on the fence about it... It gets hot pretty early in the Spring over here, so it may not have time to make a head. But then again, there's the ol' sayin' Jess always says: If I don't TRY, I FOR SURE won't get anything! Right Jess!!

So glad I’m not the only one in zone 8 planting onion and garlic in late January 🤣. We recently moved and the property has an established garden plot with irrigation, but it’s been left for many years and Bermuda has taken over. What is your plan to get rid of yours? It was disheartening trying to grow there last year.

Hoping the two Noahs can guide your 'Ark' through any and all troubled waters. 😊 I couldn't help it, coming back to my comment. I bet your brother never thought when you hired an additional helper he would have to join a monastery. He has become Brother Noah.

I lived in Indiana where there were lots of mice and moles. We coincidentally got a Schnauzer puppy and after a few seasons I realized there weren’t any more rodents around. After doing a little research I found out that Schnauzers were actually bred to be “ratters”. It might be beneficial to have one on your farm, plus my little dog was sweet, loving and great with the kids and our big dog.

I bet Baby Cow makes an appearance on the 1st with the new moon. I'm stalking for Helen baby updates, but I'm also thrilled it's not too late for onions and garlic! I'll look for sets this weekend.

Have y'all considered an aquaponics set up? Could also grow mushrooms around the fruit trees. Wine caps would do really well.

My daughter in law is due technically on the 4th of February and YES pregnancy is unpredictable lol. She began dilating about 2 weeks ago, she is thoroughly uncomfortable, and so ready to have her baby in her arms instead of her womb lol. As a person who has had a baby I know her pains and feel for her and am almost as excited to meet this child as she is (and my son, the daddy lol) . Side note it would be so exciting if the calf and baby are born in the same time line lol 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Ms. Jessica your soil looks soooo good. I would like to share with the Noah's a small garden trick. For a 6 ft. tall man, if he would make a fist and stick his thumb out straight to the side, from the side of the pinky knuckle to the thumb tip is very close to 6". If he's lookin for 9" spacing, just stick the pinky straight to the side and measure pinky tip to thumb tip. (It will be the letter Y in the fingerspelling alphabet.) God bless your beautiful farm.
