@@RootsandRefugeFarm Concern with the extreme weather. Thinking greenhouse need to control for hot and cold, and withstand high winds and floods. So I did some research 🧐 What do you think 💭 Extrême weather events have caused me to change design criteria. Future greenhouse Have multiple level with interior platform for growing and must extend into ground for cooling. An additional inground extension must recycle water from plants, the other harvest rainwater. Proof of concept design is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6fOaIapr81pnMk Due to potential for flooding, interior growing platforms must also float. Can be accomplished cheaply with reed beds and modern plastic. Proof of concept is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqO2pop6rMuBjNU The Chinese greenhouse blankets are marvelous, but the only manage night time cold. My current understanding of how they work kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-tn6p5l9N5jpY Problem is in the future they will also need to manage heat. Both heat and cold can be managed by an interior rather than exterior blanket made of foamed carbon dioxide or air in a transparent curtain which still permits light. Proof of concept is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKqkaX6jZbSYlac The exterior top of greenhouse must be strong. And beautiful. As is my present design I intend to use bamboo, it’s stronger than steel. I ordered bamboo seeds for giant bamboo varieties. I shall grow them in construction bags so the don’t become invasive. When cut for building should be soaked in borax and slowly dried in sun. I will make rope from leftover jute chords after harvesting the edible leaves. Assemble frame with drill, hole drill bit, and jute rope. I will make storm shutters from bamboo to close over greenhouse plastic. The end of greenhouse must also hold energy systems. A system harvesting vertical aspect of building to leverage wind turbine, water turbine, Archimedes screw to refill upper water tanks, solar heat and solar electricity. Proof of concept in Agora tower. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oICafaCwmLOna68 Modern example of Archimedes screw. A low energy way yo refill upper level drip snd water tanks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKTWoGx6rJyCpcU I will build model to test design changes this summer before placing order. If I can’t dig into ground I will stack cheap bags of dirt. I will set frame on top of that. I was thinking you might be able to place seedlings out longer if you stack bags of dirt and duck tape greenhouses plastic on it. The same thermodynamics are at play.

I would love more content on basic maintenance/chores/production you do for the tools that get you through every day. Things like caring for cast iron (I know you shared some on this before but it helps to see the process and if you are doing it anyways), dehydrator, or knives. Making the products you use at home every day. I cannot believe the commercial products I used to put in or on my body, and the amount of money I spent on them. I am always trying to learn new ways and skills, and you’ve inspired me so very much. I am also working through some health stuff that makes my body suddenly have issues with the weirdest things so I have to constantly come up with new formulas and recipes to avoid the inflammation or irritation that comes with these flare ups.

If at any point in the future that you would want to prevent Weasels, Mink, Fox, Coyote, Skunks etc from coming into your barn and potentially harming any animal or bird that you'll have in there, now is the time to prevent it. Before you put soil along the back and sides bury hardware cloth or another heavy gauged small holed wire down into the soil first. Later on it will be much harder to do, especially with concrete being put in. A farm friend of mine lost 2 back lambs to a Fox last year. They thought they had a Mink after finding 2 dead Ducks and several injured one morning. As it was winter and a storm was going to start that night they decided to put the Ducks in the barn with their very pregnant goats and a Pony. One of the goats delivered twins that night and another was overdue. They put a baby Nanny camera in to monitor her so they could go out if she had trouble. At some point in the night she woke up and looked at her monitor. She saw a Fox attacking a newborn goat. Before she & hubby could run out there the Fox had killed 2 lambs (1 from each mother) and gotten away. It dug a surprisingly small hole into the barn. So small that the lambs couldn't be pulled out. Newborn Nigerian Dwarf kids are small so imagine how small this hole was! They had never seen a Fox or other predator of that type on the farm before and didn't worry about them getting into the barn. The dogs usually stopped any fur covered predator out in the field first. So think about it before you get much further as it will be harder to do later and more costly both emotionally and financially.

Might and Jess. Please take some precautions when building the broader to prevent a disaster. Baby chicks will walk right through 2 x 4 inch wire. I recommend no larger than 1 x 1 inch. Also you will need half inch hardware cloth or similar all around the edge to prevent digging preditors. It should come down the wall or partition and then out horizontally about a foot to prevent digging. I love your videos. I've been following you for several years now and not only learn from you but enjoy your wholesome family entertainment. Your beautiful barn will be a palace for your lucky animals. ❤ 🐐🐪🐣🐓🐖🐂

My stalls are adjustable. We have tongue and groove slats that slide into grooves on the post....so you can take the individual slats out to make double stalls, lower stalls, higher stalls depending on what we are housing (horses, goats, etc). It has worked amazingly well for us for 18 years and you just have a rack on the wall to place the board stack rather than trying to pin an entire wall section above.

Looking forward to see your ideas for the 'pocket gate'. I've spent a lot of time brainstorming solutions for my own barn (my alleyway is only 10 feet across, so easier to manage, but still a puzzle to find the best solution) Here are two that work for me. 1) sliding barn door hardware but I hung a gate, not a full door 2) used three rails. Each slides independently into a pocket in the wall. sure its a little bother that to open i slide them back one at a time, but a bonus is i can slide open two, allowing me to duck under, but keep the top rail closed and still keep out the horses.
