Thank you to you and your dad for going thru the harvesting process for your turkey hens. I think we all need to see how our meat is grown, processed and used for our nourishment, so we don't take it for granted. I also appreciate how aware you are of what has been given to you and your family to raise these turkeys. So glad you made the decision to stay on the home place and work around the difficulties you are being faced with re: employment, as so many of our friends and neighbors are experiencing also. It's always a pleasure for me to watch your videos , they are peaceful, entertaining sometimes :), very informative. Liz

That was a relatively smooth trouble free turkey processing day. I hope they are delicious and tender. The cost savings is also significant.

Takes me back to my childhood.. Processed quite a few chickens.. never turkeys. The process looked smooth and efficient.

I hope you saved the giblets, the hearts, livers and gizzards from those birds....giblet gravy is an essential at my Thanksgiving table.... I'll admit I never thought about the bugs in harvesting animals in the fall...but it makes perfect sense! All your animals have a great life with one bad moment and you can't do any better than that! Never tried the soap in the water, we always used paraffin and the weather was always cool enough that it hardened rapidly and made getting the feathers off fast and easy. Let us know if you get any soapy flavor from the birds when you eat them! 'Quartered sounds good, a bit of white and dark meat to choose from! and enough of a carcass that you still can make turkey stock when you're done! I am relearning "slowly slowly" I had a small stroke in mid September and recovery is forcing me to accept slowly slowly, as a recovery tool. Gratitude is always first for me, even when it's hard to pinpoint! Keep seeing gratitude and you'll always find the path!!

@@TheModernYeoman Thanks Sean! That means a lot! fortunately my stroke was a small one and very little damage was done, and for that l am VERY grateful! recovery is incremental and i am learning acceptance in a new way! it has only been a month and slowly slowly is a daily mantra for me!! If for nothing else thank you for that!!! keep those good thoughts coming!

Linda here…we used a 50 gallon water barrel as a chicken plucker and did plenty of turkeys and up to 3-4 chickens at once with ease and NO soap in the scalder. We used the plans from the Whiz Bang Chicken Plucker online.

Sean, to put into perspective, tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving. Since I was born in Canada, We have been celebrating, the Canadian Thanksgiving, for the last 5 years. I love the extra time between now and Christmas, to fully enjoy each holiday. However, there are literally no options for turkeys at this time in Va. I had to purchase a frozen Butterball whole turkey breast. Now I don't mind that it was frozen, nor do I mind it was a breast, what I do mind is not having choices and thereby better prices. This bird was 8.81 lbs. for a grand total of $28.37. As you portion your turkeys, just say, Thank you Lord, I have a choice.😋😋 Until next time, y'all have a Blessed day.

We are in our second year of meat chickens and turkeys. We got rhe turkeys too late this year so we'll be processing them right before Thanksgiving in the bitter cold of upstate NY. Oh well, the taste cannot be beat!

I'm watching this a month later. For some reason, I stopped getting notifications for your channel. I had been missing you, and I decided to search you out. We have never processed turkeys, only chickens. I am curious. What do you think was your average processing time per turkey?
@TheModernYeoman

Thanks for checking in on me! On average it takes us maybe 30 minutes per bird. Longer if we don’t get all of the feathers out!

I admit I can't really picture how you use those cones.... Also, what kind of snake was that?
@TheModernYeoman
@TheModernYeoman Жыл бұрын
Believe that was a rat snake (aka black snake or king snake). Even though they take eggs occasionally, these are good snakes, as they eat rodents and poisonous snakes. We like to keep them around!

@@TheModernYeoman Thanks for the answer! Being from California my first concern when I see a snake has always been making sure it's not a rattler. (And despite the variety of other snakes in every part of California I've lived in, about 90% of the time it has, in fact, been a rattler, so snakes... always make me a bit nervous XD)
