"It's Insane" | Town Sued For Racism After Paying Slavery Reparations

Kevin O'Sullivan and Rakib Ehsan discuss the feasibility and fairness of providing reparations for historical injustices, particularly slavery.
This comes after an activist group sued the town of Evanston in Illinois, claiming that a scheme to pay slavery reparations is "unconstitutional" due to the programme discriminating based on an applicant's race.
Rakib Ehsan argues that addressing social fundamentals like family stability and community cohesion is crucial before discussing reparations for historical injustices.

@@tdw5933 The tribes and nations of Africa were all behind the slave trade. They were the people responsible for the kidnapping and selling of people in to slavery. That is where any reparations should come from. America already paid reparations to the former slaves when they were freed after the emancipation. Quite frankly if this is going to happen, the burden of proof of having slave ancestors should be on the recipient to receive reparations. We had thousands of black slaver owners and more than 10,000 free black slavers in America. If those were ancestors, those people should have to pay in to the reparation money pools, they should have to pay their percentage. If that were the case, that would put an end to this reparation talk when a lot of black people find out they have to pay in. Sunny Hostin would be one of those that had to pay in. Most of the nations of Africa didn't outlaw slavery until the late 1980s, and that was because of world pressure and pressure from the UN. Most of the nations of Africa still have slavery currently, the laws are ignored. Nobody says anything about that, including the blacks in America, they don't care about that, and if you bring up that fact, they call it "white talking points".

The scourge of slavery affected individuals in nearly every culture, region, and era of history. Although the term “slave” often conjures thoughts of the atrocities committed during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the practice of enslaving human beings was common in both ancient and modern times and persists to this day. Presently, the estimated number of individuals enduring enslavement ranges from 38,000,000 to 46,000,000, highlighting the ongoing nature of this abhorrent practice.

People who never owned slaves paying reperations to people who were never slaves, in a State where slavery was never a thing. No African Americans were paid reperations, Black Americans were given money as to entertain fraud, satisfy misplaced guilt, and to maintain a sense of victimization. Race has been repeatedly thrust into the spotlight and made a matter of contention by those who manage and profit from maintaining a system of dependencey which promotes self victimization and blaming others. This is simply another measure focused on maintaining more animosity, resentment, and division. And, championed globally as to direct attention away from slavery abroad, IRL.

What do they think most of the world was like at that time? Slavery was for thousands of years a universal practice. Long before the transatlantic slave trade of Africans sold by Africans to European and Arab traders to their shores (Europeans generally didn’t disembark because of hostile territory and disease), Africans had for a longer period on a larger scale raided British and European shores and kidnapped people as slaves. Whilst slavery had long been abolished throughout the British Empire, most of the world had seen no wrong in it and opposed British patrols sent to end it around the world. America was a wild and new place with civilization being newly implemented with land and power struggles. In any case, most places in the world are still much worse for most people.

I am pretty sure giving away tax dollars under such a plan would be unconstitutional. Even if their ancestors were harmed by slavery they were privately owned. The government would bear no responsibility because they were simply following the history and traditions of the world at the time. The Court itself would look at the laws at the time of slavery and say they had committed no crime. It was only until they made slavery a crime was it illegal. Then you will have to prove linage. This would only apply to direct descendants of slaves. A fact recipients would have to prove. I do not see this issue succeeding. They knew it would fail when they offered it.

Only a small percentage of Americans ever owned slaves. Most people wouldn’t have been able or willing to pay for one. There are millions of Americans from families who didn’t even arrive in America until after slavery was over, many Italian immigrants came in the early 1900’s, including my family. They were peasant farmers in Italy and there were no slaves working for them anywhere. They were horribly discriminated against when they arrived but they worked hard and overcame it. My husband is Native American, enough said there. So what are we paying for? Where’s my husband’s reparations? Maybe we should all get reparations. I’m sick to death of this BS. At the height of slavery about 5% of the population in America owned slaves. It was mostly extremely rich people that owned plantations and they had hundreds of slaves. The average person didn't own slaves they were just trying to survive. Edit... There were also black slave owners in America. People don't realize that they were actually black people who owned black slaves in America. So do the black descendants of those black slave owners owe other black people reparations? And if you trace black Americans whose ancestors were slave back far enough into Africa there would be times in Africa where their ancestors also owned slaves. So do the Black American descendants of slavery in America all other people in Africa reparations? It's all just stupid, it's just children trying to think of any excuse they can to get something for free.

The compensation of slave owners around the world by the British was to enable the safe and peaceful release of them, because slave owners, particularly the North African and Arab slavers, would kill them or throw them overboard if they saw the British approaching to free them, and many British naval personnel were being killed in trying to stop the widespread deeply culturally ingrained practice around the entire globe. It might have taken Parliament two hundred years to abolish it (but they did it at a time when the rest of the world saw no wrong in it and was strongly determined to continue). You can’t especially condemn the nation that did by a vast margin the most to stop a thing just because it was once similar to the rest of the world. We did so voluntarily, and alone decide it was wrong and not only end our own participation in facilitating the transport and trade for the enslaving and trading nations around the world but spent our own time, money and lives ensuring it was ended everywhere insofar as we were able. Nobody else came near to such an important and advanced moral development and action. Compensation by the British had one purpose, to free the enslaved. It wasn’t in recognition of any wrong doing, and those around the world that captured, enslaved and sold the slaves (usually their own people) would surely be the first legal target for that.

The British had a saying hundreds of years ago " English air is to pure for a slave to breathe" which meant any slave of any colour became free the moment they put one foot on English soil. This came about after a slave jumped ship and ran away from his master. The case went to court. The slave was set free, stayed in the country got a job, got married and had a family.

Western countries should just create laws to outright ban reparations and compensation etc for slavery and the past in general. Job done and discussion over! As these people will intend to carry on for years and years and just keep banging on about it! We need to shut the conversation down

Encouraging African-Americans to consider withholding their votes in presidential elections until reparations are received is a powerful and thought-provoking idea. "Let us recognize the incredible strength and influence of our collective voice. For centuries, African-Americans have fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and recognition of our fundamental rights. Today, we stand at a critical juncture in our history, where we have the opportunity to demand the acknowledgment of past injustices and the implementation of long-overdue reparations. By exercising our right to vote strategically, we can send a resounding message to the nation and the world: that we refuse to accept the status quo any longer. We can use our voting power as a tool for change, insisting that our political leaders prioritize the issue of reparations. Our unity and determination can compel those in power to address the legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism that continues to impact our communities today. Imagine the impact of millions of African-Americans coming together to demand reparations as a prerequisite for our support in presidential elections. Our collective stance would reverberate across the political landscape, igniting conversations, debates, and, ultimately, action. By leveraging our voting power in this way, we can demonstrate that we will no longer settle for empty promises or superficial gestures. Let us remember the trailblazers and activists who paved the way for our rights and opportunities. Let us honor their legacy by using our votes as a force for change, a demand for justice, and a catalyst for progress. Together, we can inspire a new chapter in our nation's history, one that acknowledges the painful truths of our past and paves the way for a more equitable and inclusive future. Our decision to withhold our votes until reparations are addressed is a declaration of our worth, our dignity, and our unwavering commitment to a fair and just society. It is a call to action, a rallying cry for accountability and reparative justice. Let us stand together, empowered by our history and driven by our vision for a better tomorrow. Our votes are not just ballots; they are instruments of change, and we will use them to shape a future that reflects our values, respects our experiences, and honors our resilience."copy paste and share.

It might be a good idea if black Americans stopped seeking victim status and got on with embracing the culture you enjoy. Stop killing each other and indulging in criminal conduct.who would actually get this money and why? Stop separating yourselves from society and just see yourselves as Americans, drop the prefix. Participate in your country and enjoy the opportunities you have; they are many.

@@Kivuhnobody would care if we stopped voting. If anything, it would be counter productive! "You wont do what we want, so were going to let you make all the decisions without any input from us!
