But they seem to forgotten to suspend dusty martin hit on a Brisbane bloke with his back to him and off the ball. Won a brownlow that year. Same year they suspended a fair tackle all because a player got concussed. That cost dangerfield the brownlow.

The tribunal makes sense in a setting without extensive video coverage of the ground and technology that allows people to make a (reasonably) objective decision without the need for explanation from players. These days rarely does an AFL player need to plead their case as all the evidence is in front of the MRP in 4k definition.

That second one: The problem is: Most of these "Marks of the Year" are blatant illegal push-offs of the player on the ground with the guy's leg. I invite posters to compare the Neil Sachse hit in 1975 (which severed his spinal cord) with the Rioli hit on Rowell. In both cases the opponent who made contact with the victim was running counter to the line of the ball, and jumped into the air which guaranteed heavy contact to the head. I get it that AFL is a chaotic sport, there is no offside and you can't put in hard rules for every situation. Best to keep it simple for the players and emphasize the importance of key principles. If you leave your feet to effect a bump (ie Rioli) when not in possession you have assumed a duty of care. Separately, further to Eddie's point, there should be a video umpire with the power to send an offending player off the ground should they engage in violence which results in injury to the player. People will undoubtedly moan about this - but there is a basic principle of sport at stake here - a team cannot gain a competitive advantage by engaging in illegal violent conduct.

I hate to say it however I think FC have nailed it. If its a footy action then it should be play on no report. If its a non football act then throw the book at them. The AFL has created this because very action has a reaction, when you change the fabric of the game from its your responsibility to protect yourself to its everyone else's responsibility to protect you it encourages players to be reckless. @@seashoree1 But the issue with citing Nick's Mark was that Nick went with the flight, collected his own player (If I remember right, it was knee or leg to the face), and then only caught part of the Sydney defender after Nick had already took the mark and was on the ground. It was a marking contest, and both players were there at the same time, Rioli was already committed in the air, saw he wasn't going to get there in time, and turned sideways in midair. Even though there are Match Review/Tribunal problems every year, Rd 1 in 2022 has been the most strange set of decisions I can remember. The Riewoldt 2004 mark comparison by by Rioli's defence team is nonsense. Riewoldt had his eyes on a ball behind him, so hard to look at and protect a player coming towards him from the front. He jumped because he would have struggled to reach the ball otherwise. Rioli's ball came from the front. Rioli DID see the player coming towards him from the front, otherwise he would not have turned his body. He didn't need to jump, and unlike Riewoldt, Rioli did not reach the ball first. And what happened to stiking opponents off the ball getting an automatic ban?

Gereen's suspension was NOT overtrurned by the AFL. The AFL appealed, the appeal was upheld by the appeals tribnal, and he got 6 weeks. In other words, the AFL did NOT step in and overturn the indepebdent tribunal's decision. The AFL followed correct procedure. If youre going to tell a story Eddie, please stick to the facts. Don't invent a false narrative Twisting things to suit your agenda. doesn't help the cause you're arguing for.
