I invite posters to compare the Neil Sachse hit in 1975 (which severed his spinal cord) with the Rioli hit on Rowell. In both cases the opponent who made contact with the victim was running counter to the line of the ball, and jumped into the air which guaranteed heavy contact to the head. I get it that AFL is a chaotic sport, there is no offside and you can't put in hard rules for every situation. Best to keep it simple for the players and emphasize the importance of key principles. If you leave your feet to effect a bump (ie Rioli) when not in possession you have assumed a duty of care. Separately, further to Eddie's point, there should be a video umpire with the power to send an offending player off the ground should they engage in violence which results in injury to the player. People will undoubtedly moan about this - but there is a basic principle of sport at stake here - a team cannot gain a competitive advantage by engaging in illegal violent conduct.

I hate to say it however I think FC have nailed it. If its a footy action then it should be play on no report. If its a non football act then throw the book at them. The Riewoldt 2004 mark comparison by by Rioli's defence team is nonsense. Riewoldt had his eyes on a ball behind him, so hard to look at and protect a player coming towards him from the front. He jumped because he would have struggled to reach the ball otherwise. Rioli's ball came from the front. Rioli DID see the player coming towards him from the front, otherwise he would not have turned his body. He didn't need to jump, and unlike Riewoldt, Rioli did not reach the ball first. And what happened to stiking opponents off the ball getting an automatic ban?
