Yup. cat eyes are designed around noticing small, fast-moving things at the ground in front of them. That checkered pattern is basically a huge stimulus to the cat, and when it moves intermittently like prey do its even worse.

She thinks the blankets prey trying to escape her. The pulls out are spaced out which drives kitties nuts with anticipation. When I drag string for my girl I'll often leave it sitting near here for a minute with her staring at it just waiting to try to "run" away. The end is her finally delivering the killing blows and "eating" her kill. If there's one thing that dominates a cats life it's their hunting instinct. Even looking at them too long sends them into it and stalking you.

The cat is bored and just wants to play - the blanket is a toy. Invest in either a fishing-rod style cat toy or a laser pointer. One of you should lure the cat away from the blanket with that toy; once the cat is completely distracted, the other grabs the blanket.
