I've been learning the bagpipes for about 2 months now and I referred myself as a bagpiper as soon as I learned amazing grace

As soon as i was told i could progress to the pipes from chanter, i called myself a piper. Regardless if i could play them or not. But that was due to my own self confidence. And worry that i would give up. So when i got to the pipes i knew i wasnt giving up, so i allowed myself to take on the title as a piper

I played the Pipes with my high school band 44 years ago. I am now 62. I have practiced with a practice chanter and recently decided to buy a set of small pipes. My intention is to concentrate on 10 tunes and to get better and better. My hope is to buy a Highland set and maybe in retirement play with a local pipe band. I love playing and I consider myself a piper getting better and better

A chanter will keep you busy enough for a few months and every piper needs a chanter :)

Thanks. I like this. When I play a bum note or mess up a birl I think why do I bother. I forget the milestones of keeping steady drones, tuning nicely and playing a strathspey at the correct time. I’m a bagpiper!

YESS!!! You are a bagpiper Colin! It's tough to not let that perfectionist voice in our ear overwhelm us at times! I like how you remind yourself of all of the things you are doing well! steady drones, good timing, and being in tune at one point I'm sure felt unreachable, And now look at you go! Right on!!

I'd love to get started playing, but I don't have much of a place to go to practice, save for the woods behind my house. I haven't even bought a practice chanter because I don't know where I could go to play that I wouldn't disturb the whole neighbourhood.

Finding suitable practice areas can be a challenge. The practice chanter is no louder than an penny whistle or recorder so it's very doable! 😀

Hey Alec,I think I`m not putting enough pressure on the bag. I`m having a wee bit of trouble holding the bagpipes;but I feel that will come to pass.

I wanted to go to U of C, but ended up going to UVic instead. And I'm (not really) a runner either, but yeah... track & field and cross country in high school, (no varsity running, though...) marathons in my 30s and 40s... But... I guess I'm a bagpiper after two months of almost daily practice on the chanter. In other news, I'm thinking of getting a set of Highland Pipes from Bagpipes Galore. I believe I've seen you wearing a McCallum Bagpipes shirt in your videos, but do you have any thoughts about Bagpipes Galore?

Very cool! Great to hear you are on your piping journey! I've not heard of Bagpipes Galore... in looking at their website I see they don't carry any brands pipes from makers I know and trust. They could be OK, I just don't know one way or another. If you are on a budget you can get a set of pipes from my friend Davey, made in the USA! Use the coupon code GETBAGPIPE5 to get 5% off and another 5% will go to the African Blackwood conservation Project! www.3dprintedbagpipes.com/product-page/complete-and-ready-to-play

This video totally speaks to me. I have been playing for 2 years and know a few tunes but still feel because my timing, techniques, grace notes and doubling are not exactly perfect and still have a reluctance to call myself a piper. Thanks for the vote of confidence

I'm so glad this spoke to you Daniel and thanks for the comment!! Sounds like you are rock'n being a piper to me! Tell that perfectionist voice in your ear "I told you so, I AM a piper!" 😀

well in my opinion.. i think the moment you become a bagpiper is the moment you can play solo, in front of a crowd and THEY think its well played!
