I’ve had one of these for a year - also torrefied spruce and sinker mahogany. At first I was attracted to Steve’s ethos in using salvaged materials (he explains that really well in his KZbin videos).) i have to be honest and also say that I was attracted by the bill of materials at the price.I don’t usually buy things i haven’t already played but I ordered one which Steve sent up to me in Oregon. I haven’t regretted this purchase for a second. The shape really grows on you - it’s not actually a square box! Jeremy’s friend was right to point out that stringed instruments in similar shapes are common in other cultures (also in SE Asia) and also in American history. It’s obviously a real talking point. The resale issue is real for now but I don’t plan on selling. He offers different tonewoods also, do yourself a favor and get one!

I knew you’d like this guitar! Steve makes them as simply as he can when it comes to aesthetics. He’s also built my buddy a “boxuki” so I’m sure he could do an octave mandolin for you! My guitar is 6 strings with a 23” scale length. All salvaged California redwood 🥰

It looks like a serious musical instrument "cigar box" guitar. That's fascinating, and it really does sound good. Since I'm playing around with some amateur building, you're making me more and more curious, and I may have to just do something based on this. That would probably be a very good basis for an octave mandolin, and I bet it would sound very good. And curious about how the pickup works out too.

Has a beautiful ring to it. And yes, Russell is correct; it does look like an entho-European instrument. I think I would have liked a square sound hole on this, It would look better geometrically. But very nice sound and quality reclaimed woods. Nice to know that nothing went to waste from the other luthiers.

I wonder if he can make a travel size that’s a rectangle shape. Imagine the sales on that - who wouldn’t want a Travel Rectangle Boxwood? I’m sure it would resonate nicely, even if not as loudly. Might take some trial and error in design, but I bet it’s perfectly doable! I think it would sell even more than this one. It’s a neat idea all in all. Sounds really beautiful!

Watching this a year out. Just seeing these for the first time - crazy concept, but it works, and Steve does a good job of explaining why it works in his videos... you commented about whether it needs a little more decoration or a pickguard... I dunno - I've seen a couple with a "Martin" shaped pickguard on 'em - not sure it looks right. I actually like the stark simplicity (including the bare fingerboard w/side dots only); it just really keeps the focus on the tone and practical nature of the "pure, elementary" design of the instrument. I'm checking to see if he can make me a lefty.

Just a suggestion... how about making it more (trapezoid?) shaped, ie, narrower shoulders, wider bout at the base? This might make it easier to handle without losing the straight sides. So it would look almost like a flying V, this would make the sides longer, but not by much, and still would retain the solid straight sides. Is that worth considering?.. not exactly like a V , but a squared-off V.
@chrisgmurray3622
@chrisgmurray3622 4 ай бұрын
Maybe the shoulders could be narrower than the liwer biut, while keeping the "squareness"..( or should I say trapezoid?)

@@johnthemachine why? Doesn't really look any more uncomfortable to me than a standard acoustic body shape, besides maybe looking a little silly playing it. Your arm is the same distance from your body, you're hunched over the same, and I'm not sure it even slides around as much 🤷‍♂️ the only thing I could see being uncomfortable is the corner pressing into your sternum, which happens to me with every guitar. I do think they look a little weird or Minecrafty but they sound nice though.
