In 2004, the DOJ in their report to congress determined that the 1994 Weapons Ban "had little to no effect" on firearm related deaths. That reinstating it wouldn't do much going forward. That report was the biggest reasoning the ban ended.

I just picked up a CZ 457 Varmint MTR (Match Type Rifle) and it is a tack driver with the right ammo. It is picky about ammo but once you find what it likes its easy to shoot 10 shots at 50 yds with all holes touching. Have even put empty 22 cases into previous holes and shot them out of the target at 50 yds. Easy to pick off shotguns shells with it at 100 yds.

In the summer of '94, I bought a Chinese SKS for $80. Couldn't afford the Russian ones which sold for $230. Gold was selling for $400 an ounce back then. Using Gold as the standard, that would be the equivalent of $500 today. As a young adult, I grossed $560 every two weeks at my entry-level job ($7/hour doing inventory, relative to how much gold it buy, that would be like making $43.75 today, I should have bought gold). I could buy a Chinese SKS with two days of wages($88 after taxes). An entry-level job today would take a week's wage to buy an SKS after taxes at today's prices. This definitely shows that using guns and gold as a measure, wages have stagnated, but you already knew that. Just some data points for you youngsters.

There's a whole bunch of data points that show just how bad neoliberal economics has screwed the American people. They're worried about making sure the ATF and ICE and all these law enforcement groups have funding to enforce the laws, but the SEC is basically toothless and serves as a revolving door for corporate execs. Consequently, the Nancy Pelosi index is a thing and people make decent money just copying her stock trades. If you want government incompetence at its finest, look at the SEC, not the ATF.

My Wife bought me a brand new Norinco at a Pawn Shop about that same time and gave it to me for Christmas. The problem is, she didn't buy any ammo "Just in case I didn't like it". I told her that a rifle without ammo is just a steel handled club and a pistol without ammo is basically a rock. Anyway, at the time she bought the SKS, Norinco yellow box ammo was selling for around $35.00 a case and was everywhere. But after she gave me the rifle at 1st of the year, you couldn't find it anywhere and I was eventually able to get some Russian ammo for about $85.00 a case. I would have loved to have gotten ahold of ten or so cases of the Norinco. A friend of mine had some and I saw him shoot perfect holes through an old Middlebuster Plow Point.

You're not alone I know of a few people over the years that have used the sks as a hunting rifle for deer and hogs. They used to be cheap accurate rifles that were a legal caliber for hunting. It made for a good entry level rifle so Dad's bought them up. Plus low recoil and for the price of $99 a piece in the 90's they were a steal. I'm mad at myself for not buying a dozen of them back in the day. $100 bill for a sks and 1000 rounds of Russian surplus ammo was a swinging deal. Especially when now they're around $700-$900 a pop.

I remember, back in the late 80's, going to a gun show and one booth literally had crates of SKS's. The booth operator simply opened up a crate and hanged a sign on the cover ($69.99 each), and when the crate was emptied, he just grabbed another crate and opened it up. Today, that empty crate alone is probably worth a hundred bucks.

@WarFrog935
@WarFrog935 2 ай бұрын
It was actually designed in 1930 as the SKS-30 and chambered 7.62x54r, The PTRS-41 actually is a scaled up SKS-30 using the same underloading en bloc clip. In 1931 Simonov updated the design to be reloaded with a Mosin clip. In 1943 Simonov started updating the rifle for the 7.62x39 M43 cartridge which was identical to the German 7.75x39 Gecko cartridge. The SKS as we know it entered service in 1945 and saw limited usage in the final months of WW2.

I've owned Chinese, Yugo and Russian SKS rifles. In the 1990's, my fun gun was a Norinco SKS with one of the 20 round Chinese mags. I modified several with the 20 round mags and they all worked perfectly. At the time, our club had a military rifle match and as I stood waiting my turn a fellow with an AR-15, standing with his buddies commented "Look at that Commie piece of s**t". (I don't think he thought I could hear him). He went first and soon came back looking dejected. His buddies asked what was wrong and he said "My AR jammed on me three times". I just smiled. My SKS didn't. In my experience the SKS is generally more accurate than the AK-47.

Unfortunately, in California that's exactly how they're treated. About 30 years ago a famous case occurred when a San Jose cop received letters that a couple of his unmodified original SKS's were illegal under the 1989 laws on "Assault Rifles" and eventually lost his job because he didn't immediately turn them in for destruction. He later won in court when California couldn't even tell the judge what technical features on the SKS's were illegal. He got backpay/promotion, but he moved to another state to get away from California's restrictive gun laws. They have this weird listing of SKS's from countries from Albanian to Yugoslavian. Years ago about 1/3 of all SKS's were illegal under the DOJ's authority (not the law). Technically the only illegal one (under their "Assault Rifle" laws) should be the ones with the AK Magazine conversions (a mod done by the Chinese decades ago to upgrade their SKS's with high-capacity magazines). Only about 10 percent of all Chinese imports had that mod, and it was not used by most other SKS producing countries. The excuse on other ones are things like a grenade launcher sight (you can't buy Soviet era grenades in the US or even produce them due to the manufacturing issues). Yet the California DOJ kept adding SKS's to the list, that weren't in the original laws (or even later laws). After that court case and several public humiliations on the SKS rules, they pulled many of those SKS's off the list. But currently several models of SKS's are illegal in California and can't be sold in the state. They claim that only SKS's with detachable mags are illegal and yet refuse to register SKS's that don't have the AK mags modification or have the modifications to use detachable mags. You can take any SKS, remove the fixed magazine, and put on a specially modified detachable magazine (it's awkward, but it works) and later return it back to it's original configuration. Those are illegal in California, but since they can be put on any SKS in existence, the California DOJ tries to refuse to register any model SKS"s they claim can be modified with those magazines and as I said any SKS can use those special detachable mags, so all SKS's are suspect in the DOJ's eyes. Many people have had refusals on SKS's registrations because they suspected or saw something on the pictures on their SKS's that they thought were illegal mods to put on those larger magazines. One friend submitted his Yugoslavian SKS a couple of years ago and it was refused as he had removed the grenade launcher sight (they said it was an unauthorized modification), yet they put that gun on the original DOJ (only) ban list years ago because it had a grenade launcher sight. I think they just look for excuses not to register legal guns, like their constant removal from the "Approved Handgun List" that had reduced the number of legally available to purchase handguns in California by almost 75 percent. That list gets shorter every year.

Bubba'ed is a term SKS purists (collectors) use to describe SKSs' that persons have basically changed simply by adding a polymer stock. I did that to my $80 SKS however I kept the wood stock and appurtenances that came with it. It can be reverted to its original configuration very quickly. One change I will not undo is the spring loaded firing pin that an SKS collector sold years ago which greatly eliminates any chance of a slam fire. I do have other historical rifles to which I would never dream of altering anything, but an SKS, whatever floats yer boat. BTW they are legal for deer hunting in my state and you are correct, they are a lot of fun. One thing I have seen is scoped SKSs' that IMHO are difficult to maintain a zero. The polymer stock you have on the SKS on your video may do better with the forward mounted picatinny rail. That was a great video about a fun (and used to be cheap) rifle. I remember the old days. BTW, the blonde/light colored wood stocked SKS was a new "commercial" gun from China. The "red" colored came from PLA inventory, whether used or unissued. Usually used. On occasion you could locate a red one in unissued condition. Sometimes the dealer didn't care whether red or blonde. Get 'em out the door!

Love my Russian SKS!! Never had a jam or any other problems with the rifle!! All numbers match, but the upper hand guard was replaced at one point and is darker in color, and is stamped with the same numbers has the rest of the gun. I have not shot norma but I will try if I can find it in Alaska!

Bought my Yugo SKS in 97 for $89. A damm good rifle to hunt with, and seeing versions stripped of "furniture" going for over five bills, brings the love factor to 10.

In the early 90s (before the AWB) I bought a brand new Norinco SKS at a gun show for $80. And ammo was about $3 for a 20-round box. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.

I have a SKS in like new condition. Tried to zero at 20 meters. With issue sights it shot 9 inches right and 7 inches high. The front sight was adjusted but still shoots right. I put Tech Sights on and now all is well.

An SKS is a semiautomatic rifle internal magazine rifle loaded with stripper clips. It is chambered in 7.62x39mm the same intermediate round as the AK-47 assault rifle. The SKS widely used as a frontline infantry rifle unitst and reserve units of the Soviet Union and China. The SKS was widely used in many Communist bloc countries during the late 1940's through the early 1960's. The SKS has been adopted for detachable amo magazines. The SKS is essentially an assault rifle for all intents and purposes becarusey its only purpose is as a weapon of war. It has been widely used in many wars including the Vietnam war. It is still deployed with militia units in many countries as a second line weapon. Many military troops are trained to fire their personal weapons on semiautomatic mode to limit ammunition consumption only firing on automatic during emergencies.

I paid $175.00 for my SKS, it was on a polymer stock, had 3 30rd mags and a spike bayonet. I bought it from a friend when I saw him hit a 22" truck rim at 400 yds, off hand. That means standing with your rifle. He hit it 4 times out of five. SOLD!!! I loved that gun...

Any chance you could put a caliper on a pulled bullet from the NORMA ammo? I'm pretty sure it applies to the Mosin but a lot of Russian/Soviet firearms measure the bullet diameter differently "measuring land-land vs groove-groove". I slugged the bore on my 3 Mosins over the years and they were all right at .312 instead of .308.

I have the sporter model that comes with the thumbhole stock. I put a very basic side folder stock on it with the cheese grater hand guard, it works great. I'm in a restrictive state so it's as close to an AK as I can get without spending $2k on a MAK90. Other than that, it's just bullpups and mini-14s/30s

I've always heard very positive things about Norma ammunition, so I decided to pick up some 5.56 from them. Unfortunately, I had all sorts of light primer strikes when running them through my DDM4v7. I decided to switch back to basic PMC X-TAC and it ran flawlessly. I then tried NORMA again, same issue. So, yea, not sure if it's just a couple isolated cases or what but it seems strange that I and a few others I've talked with have had issues. I'm talking like 3 - 7 light primer strikes per magazine.

I like SKS rifles in original condition. I think they are excellent fun affordable collectables that can still make a good emergency utility weapon if necessary. Its fills a few different niches and has a nice beefy build with a collectability to it. However that is actually a nice poly stock kit compared to most of the junky old school ones they used to have floating around. That one looks fully functional and well finished

3:20 500 dollar AR15 sounds like a fever dream to any European. The cheapest ARs start from ~1200€. And I mean THE cheapest. It is also silly how some people are still "afraid" of semiautos, no matter that we've had that tech for OVER 100 years now. It's quite likely that some of our grandparents hunted with a semiauto already before their local small town got their first light bulb.

I did try the 30 round detachable magazine in my SKS, but it would not feed the rounds into the chamber. I had also picked up a 20 round fixed magazine just like the 10 round the SKS comes with, and that also would not feed. I found the factory 10 round is the only one that works with my SKS. It's a Norinco.

It's funny this video came out today. I was looking to see if anything has happened with Pearce Armory and the SK-X which was supposed to be a new chassis system/upgrade package for the SKS to allow AK mags, modern grips, rails, etc. Gun Jesus gave it a quick KZbin Short showing this Frankenstein's monster of a rifle that only exists because dumb Canadian gun laws forbid AR15s, but SKSs are ok.
Is the SKS still a viable SHTF rifle?
