Stevie, not sure what you've been watching, but Berhalter's been trash for 5.5 years. Seb's right, he pulls the fire alarm at half-time, goes to some ridiculous 5-in-the-back setup, taking Gio off for CCV. Berhalter's been rigidly playing a 4-3-3 against all-comers for 5.5years, so the players have no experience playing this 5-in-the back. That's on Berhalter, not the players. GGG was fired from the Swedish 2nd Division for lack of offense. What have we seen from the USMNT under him - lack of offense. He was a middling MLS coach. The players and the fans deserve better.

People resorting to the typical "should have done what would have worked." The truth is no matter what he did in the game, all people care about was the end result. The manager may not be having the best time recently, but you can't blame him for these results. Individual mistakes and lack of talent is what got them knocked out. Whether or not he gets sacked depends on who is available. Some people think they want anything else and before you know it, we have a revolving door of managers circus. Typical occurrence in teams that think they are better than they are. Scapegoat the manager and stroke the ego of players.
@vex355u_fan5 ай бұрын
@@turkeydano2106 why can't he be blamed for the results? If the outcome of a match is solely determined by the players, then why bother paying a manager $2.2M/year? Not-withstanding how bad Berhalter's been, national team coaches rarely get 2 cycles. Why was he rehired after the "exhaustive search" after his first contract ended? Your "The manager may not be having the best time recently" is laughable. He has NEVER had "good times". Sacked from second division Swedish division. Barely had a level record in MLS. Fails into the USMNT coaching gig because his brother handed him the job. But yeah, sure, it's not his fault. We should keep him for the next 20 years.

Against Panama, Berhalter decided to play a low-block for the entire second half, taking off Gio Reyna -- the one really creative and best passing player on the team -- for an extra center back at home against Panama, inviting Panama to attack. He also took off Balogun for Pepi, further limiting our counter-attacking threat that would have kept Panama honest, who after losing against Uruguay might have not been so eager to push numbers forward to win and risk getting burned on a counter-attack, losing, and thus being eliminated from the tournament altogether. That tactical idiocy and cowardice has defined Berhalter's 5 years in charge. So absolutely Berhalter is culpable. I know the non-Americans of ESPN FC hate the hype for the USMNT, but this squad's potential is unknown, but under Berhalter, they are definitely far less than the sum of the parts. That has been clear for years. If we were a serious footballing nation, we would have never hired him in the first place, never rehired him, and immediately fired him after getting grouped and not be debating it now.

No manager should stay more than one cycle for the US. Klinsmann got lucky in 2006 with Germany (host country, future world cup winner Löw as an assistant coach). He said he would turn us into one of the more possession oriented teams, then we have some of the most defensive tactics in Brazil. Lucky for him, Belgium didn’t win 5-0. He lost to Jamaica in the semi’s of the Gold Cup, which should have been his last game (Bradley was fired for losing the final). America will never be what it should be in this game on the world stage until America joins the rest of the world in the way the business of football is handled. The franchise model, lack of pro-rel, MLS-USSF relationship has knock-on effects all the way down to the grassroots level. If America operated like the rest of world it would not be a pay to play country. The senior team would fund the youth programs. A diffuse pyramid would allow teams and leagues to sort themselves in to the niche they belong. Talent will be allowed to rise to the top, both players and coaches. Instead of what we have now where affluent parents pay for their mediocre child's exposure.

02:28 I'd like to point out to Seb. The captain and the top striker for Uruguay team are not guaranteed starter for their respective club teams. Heck, the top scorer for Uruguay plays for a team in Liga MX. And you freely admitted it's impossible for USA players to beat Uruguay. So it's really not a question of whether they played for their club or not, the fact of the matter is, USMNT players sucked. They played badly. That's it.

@@516Mel Lol that may be so, but the point is still valid. This USA team do not take ownership of games or have any players with that personality. You can't pin that on the coach. Next coach will come in and you'll realize the point.
@mikeguinness54085 ай бұрын
@@Brazil520 It works both ways. A manager's job is to put his players in the best positions to help them be successful and it's the players' responsibility to make sure they do their jobs properly. In this case, both sides are to blame. Berhalter is not a good coach. They lack discipline under him, which is why they've had 3 red cards in the past year that cost them matches. The fact that the USSF gave weight to the players saying they wanted Berhalter back was a giant red flag for why he shouldn't have been brought back. They weren't really making progress under him the first go, so that shows the players just wanted what they knew and feared change when change was needed. I do think this squad of US players has a bit of an entitlement attitude because they lack grit and heart when it matters, but Berhalter was not the manager to wake them out of their stupor and get them to playing to the best of their abilities.
@coletripp48144 ай бұрын
@@516Mel If the contention is, we are not beating better teams, i can somewhat agree. However, the bigger issue is how the players are playing, e.g. on Panama's first goal, there was a player in front of the shooter, basically Gregg did his job correctly. Tyler on that play left his position. Bad decision? possibly. What we know happened is if he held his position that ball could have been cut out. People blame others for what they don't really know. Its weird how everyone is avoiding the obvious aspect of the average American player verse an average player of another country. Look at their touches. When they get the ball, when they pass the ball, when they shoot the ball. Their touches are abhooooorent! Every time a US player touches the ball, it moves at least 2 meters away from the player. So then what do they do? Lunge kick the ball to the moon hoping one of their teammates is at the end of their hail-mary. I think what needs to change is the football (soccer) philosophy/culture/education. Because when I see the USMNT play, the first word that comes to mind is "flailing".

The idea that the best athletes in America play NFL or NBA largely conflates the athlete pool. Soccer players are significantly shorter than football and basketball players. You might have an argument that these athletes are playing other sports in middle school, high school, and college, but I think it's a massive oversimplification. They certainly aren't going to the NFL and NBA. I think the better argument is that we have too many options for sports for kids who often end up playing a multitude of different sports through out the year rather than dedicating themselves to soccer and when they have to choose, they're often times giving up on soccer.
