Alexi Lalas, David Mosse, and Carli Lloyd reacted to USMNT's pre-mature elimination in the group stage at Copa América after their 1-0 loss to Uruguay. Where does USMNT go next? Is Gregg Berhalter still the answer for this group as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches?

I would also recommend a change. A lot of good work has been done, but a new coach would reenergize the team. A coach who has competed for a long time in the Spain, Germany, the UK, France or Italy who has a style that builds on the work that has been done. Someone who has competed in the Bundesliga or the premiership who speaks English or someone who can work with a translator. I also think that the coach has to look carefully at those players on the field who are not playing regularly during the season. Having players on the pitch who are coming from important teams but who are not playing regularly may or may not work, it’s a risky thing. Last, we have to stop thinking that we are going to win or we should win because we are the US. Most teams have arguments compete. Look at England almost being defeated by Slovakia in regular time after tying 1-1 against Denmark or tying 0-0 against Slovenia. They only won to Serbia 1-0 in regular time. That’s soccer, you don’t win a game because you are better, you win when you compete better than the other team on the pitch.

@carlosavila9977 That mantra dates back to 1967 and the formation of the North American Soccer League and really took off in the 1970s with retiring European and South American Stars like Cruyff, Beckenbauer and Pelé (along with then household American names like Shep Messing and Werner Roth who were the most recent products of the American youth soccer movement) bringing in record crowds to watch the games. The idea was that the American youth soccer movement would immediately explode with talent. The problem was (and still remains today) the lack of knowledgeable youth coaches who grew up playing the game in neighborhood streets and Cul de Sacs, mastering the essential ball control techniques demonstrated by the Dutch coaching legend Wiel Coerver, who developed a VHS video series teaching essential ball skills to Dutch youth. kzbin.info . With the overwhelming domination and popularity of baseball, football and basketball in the United States, which virtually absorbs all of the greatest athletes out of the pool of soccer players available to develop into world class soccer players, it is doubtful the U.S. will ever develop enough quality soccer players to field a competitive World Cup team.

The funny thing about listening to U.S. analysts is that they don't realize how they sound after being grouped. They keep looking down on teams that competed better than them and insist on the "great talent" that their team supposedly has. What they don't know is that they're like the suckers playing poker. When you sit down at the poker table and you can't tell who the sucker is, that means you're the sucker. When the Copa America draw went down, everyone wanted to be in the same group as the U.S. to avoid having Argentina, Brazil or even Mexico as group headliners. This means that Uruguay, Panamá and Bolivia were ecstatic to be in a group with the weakest "top team" out of the 4 groups.

Last night I watched the game on a Chinese TV channel. The commenter said, US is like a bunch of very athletic guys playing soccer. I am not saying the Chinese team is doing better but the commenter has a point. What we don’t have is good club level coaches that teach how to pass and run and pass and run. Talent is what lacks, you can have all the athletic guys you want but that’s not the formula. It’s that talent that only few are born with that combined with athleticism makes them top players. Messi would have never been Messi if he didn’t have talent, Barcelona saw it and put him on a hormone therapy to make him develop the athleticism he lacked and look at him now. Everybody teaches how to to pass and run, training and anything you want, but if you don't have talent you won't make it in top men team. @@jwxujerry @jwxujerry it starts in the streets in Spain. My kids grew up playing the game with their Spanish cousins in the narrow Spanish streets of Rota, Spain. It gave them a great advantage when we moved back to Florida and they started playing organized youth soccer. I still remember the first practice of my youngest son (10 years old) when the coach introduced him to the team. They started the practicing in a circle attempting to "juggle" the ball on their feet and thighs. The best I saw was three or four juggles before the player lost control of the ball. The coach invited my son to join the group and asked him how many juggles he could do. My sone replied "647" which he began to demonstrate to the amazement of the coach and other players who just stood there watching him. All of this was possible because of one summer in Spain playing in the street with Spanish kids who knew hos to control the ball.

The problem is the culture of US soccer. The access to true development at the youth academy stage. Yes, there are many more resources available but only in certain areas and then only to a select few. Soccer here is still a “pay-to-play” sport. If more true athletes in America had free access to train with coaches who are truly trying to develop, then maybe we could see some actual elite players and coaching. It takes the coach AND the players. Coaches can’t be out here trying to be friends with their players. They need to be leading and getting them to the next level. Also, who is actually going out looking for creative players that are athletes? We can’t afford to keep getting the same type of players expecting better results.

Ref, var blah blah…the US still didn’t score or have enough shots at goal to change their destiny. Also, continue to treat yourselves as different from the rest of the soccer/football playing world and you always end up in this space. In your own world/minds, you’re bigger than Argentina or France. I’m not sure that’s will help you truly develop in the real world of football coz you already think you are better

Please, US fans, it is time to accept that the USMNT players aren’t as good as you think they are. This isn’t just about their pathetic coach (and truly pathetic he is). The players are over-hyped. Just because they are at European clubs is not enough. How much are they playing? Have any shown themselves to be world class? They have been revealed against Panama and then against Uruguay. What do the players have to offer when faced with adversity? Pulisic flopping and flapping his arms? Desperate for a goal and you turn to Josh Sargent? Josh Sargent??? Come on. Accept it. Sure they can beat the CONCACAF island nations, but they’re not good enough to take on the world’s best.

The lack of football infrastructure is what cripples the US. The reality is, in Spain, Brazil, Uruguay, England, Germany, heck, even countries like Georgia who beat Portugal. They all have a 1 sport culture, and that is football. There’s nothing wrong with the US having multiple sports being the pillar of communities, but football is NOT organically a pillar in any community. Playing football in the U.S. is a LUXURY, while in the rest of the world it is a commonality. Nothing the USMNT can do, unless they start changing the minds of American’s and market football to be the pillar of communities.

The U.S. team lacks something that is also missing in all CONCACAF teams: player fundamentals. This means they haven't been taught to control and strike the ball properly since they were kids. When you look at South American teams like Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, etc., you see that when a player gets the ball in the box, they usually shoot at the goal without much adjustment, and the ball goes towards the net. The U.S. team creates chances in the 18-yard box, but their players often take time to get set before shooting at the goal, which often results in losing the opportunity or getting the ball taken away. Moreover, they struggle with long passes, which catch the opposing team off guard. These are passes that go from the center of the field to the wing, and the player, with one touch, controls and sets up the ball to keep running and stay in action. All of this is part of the fundamentals. I would suggest that Team USA hire an Argentine, Uruguayan, or Brazilian coach and start training kids in these techniques from a young age.

Absolutely resonating with this podcast episode's insights on the soccer scene in the US and Mexico. Money, power, and federation issues are undeniably holding back progress. The discussion on player selection and coaching reform hits close to home as I witness talented kids in South California craving opportunities that economic barriers often deny them. It's time to think differently, break free from nepotism, and truly strive for greatness. Let's open doors for all aspiring players and coaches to make a real impact in the beautiful game.

USMNT does not play enough REAL games with consequences. USMNT is too comfortable playing Concacaf games in US soil, and that does not help them to grow as a TEAM (more than the sum of the players). Meanwhile in UEFA and CONMEBOL the qualifiers resume in Sept and October, so the teams are already thinking and planning the really tough games coming up very soon (not friendlies). Just to give some perspective: let pick Ecuador. Ecuador played 6 games for the qualifiers only in 2023, they beat Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia (in La Paz), tied with Venezuela and Colombia, only lost Argentina 1-0 (in Buenos Aires). That campaign sounds a lot tougher and better than anything USMNT has done, ever, and that is just a regular year for any CONMEBOL team. That is real competition and getting results under difficult circumstances
