It's not better, but I'm still replacing my Cintiq Pro | Kamvas Pro 24" 4K

In this video I review the Kamvas Pro 24 inch 4K tablet, and see how it compares to the gold standard Cintiq Pro. tl;dr....
...The Kamvas Pro 24" 4K tablet isn't better than the Cintiq Pro, because the screen doesn't feel as good. But after using it for 9 months I stopped caring as much and hardly notice the difference. After using it consistently, I've found the smaller form factor and lack of fan noise to be an even better benefit than the smoother screen on the Cintiq.
Overall, I can't say that switching to this tablet had a positive or negative impact on my art. Both tablets are great. If you're a professional or are very dedicated to digital art (i.e. do digitial art 5 or more hours a week) go with the Cintiq Pro. But if you want to save some money and still have a great tablet experience, the Kamvas Pro is more the sufficient to deliver.
This video took a really really long time to make, because toddlers require way more attention than I previously anticipated.

I recently bought this tablet and, to my surprise, the pen is very similar to my old Cintiq, but it is half the price of Cintiq Pro 24 in my country, so it is completely worth it! In terms of color, Windows Color Management has issues with wide color displays. Because I use SpyderX Pro to calibrate all of my monitors, I noticed this problem right away after calibrating my Huion. If you're using a nvidia GPU, use a calibrated color profile with "novideo_srgb", or "dwm_lut" for everything else. This will fix the color problem. The Kamvas Pro 24 4k has 100% sRGB, 96% adobeRGB, 89% P3, and 91% NTSC after calibration. It's an excellent display panel.

Thank you for saying that! I've watched like 6 reviews of this tablet screen, and you are the first one to mention calibration! I know that it seems like a strange idea to spend $150 to calibrate colors, because after all, you're an artist, and you're supposed to know colors, but... no. Calibration does so much more than ordinary human, even one very experienced in art, could do by hand. Always calibrate every screen you work on. The results are worth it, *especially* if you don't have a $3000+ EIZO screen or similar.

I'm glad you're continuing the review series! The user error joke made me laugh. I wasn't expecting to upgrade my 22" Kamvas this soon but due to a combination of factors (a friend is willing to buy my 22", this video) I might do so sooner than I thought. The 4k screen is especially appealing to me because due to the lower resolution of the 22" Kamvas I find myself zooming in more than I expect to work on details.

Thanks for sticking around, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! The 4k screen is really nice in the 24", probably worth the upgrade. I definitely didn't have any problems with the resolution (so much so that I didn't even think to mention it). I still haven't quite mastered putting in fine details to my drawings, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I'm still learning (plus I sort of like a messy / sketchy look, so I can hide behind my deficiencies😋).

I used to delve in the lower-price range of tablets and had a Huion tablet - about a year after purchasing it the screen started coming off and the closer i got to the edge of the display, the more accurate it registered the pen. Over the course of two weeks Huion tried compensating me with 20€, 40€, then wanted to replace it if I paid 40€, then 20€ and only then they would be willing to replace it for free. I've had a good time with the tablet - but once you have to contact support you will quickly realize what part you saved on.

I've been using my Huion Kamvas pro 20 for 2+ years now and when I first use it, the cursor was off slightly to me. But then I got use to it. I had bought a cintiq pro 24 this year to upgrade from my kamvas pro 20 but I returned it cause the fan was annoying (I thought I wouldnt mind but it's bothered me, its louder than expected) and the most important reason I couldn't deal with it because it wouldnt work right in clip studio (pen input unresponsiveness every 10 sec of drawing which created a straight line cause the .5 sec of no input) Photoshop didnt have this issue. I try to troubleshoot but I couldnt find a fix and since clip was my main program, the cintiq pro had to be returned. And yes I agree a lot with what was said in the video. the cintiq definitely have a nicer feel and control, with more accuracy to its drawing experience. not sure how much change they did to the screen between my huion kamvas pro 20 2019 and the current flagship of huion but from what you said, I feel like I have a similar experience. while the drawing experience was definitely nicer, I didnt care anymore about the drawing experience cause the cintiq had annoying problems that my old kamvas did not. however, if you are really into drawing and inking, the cintiq is nice and might be for you if u got the $ to spend but you are able to still achieve nice results with the kamvas. I would say my main problem with my kamvas now is the color and clarity when painting. Found out I get a better experience when dealing with colors and paints when I switch to my main monitor and just use my kamvas like those no screen tablet. For drawing, I use it regularly, its quick to switch which monitor register pen input with the huion app. Tldr: Overall, I would not get the cintiq cause its more cumbersome than the kamvas (size matter and the fan on cintiq is annoying, also the temp compare to kamvas 20 inch is noticable but not a big deal) but if you place drawing experience above all those ergonomics than the cintiq is for you if you got the $$$$.
@TaylorStine
@TaylorStine Жыл бұрын
I've definitely shared a similar experience - I switched to Photoshop because my brushes in Clip Studio felt a little bit off (maybe it was just a driver issue or something they've since fixed). Even though I have the Cintiq Pro, it's sitting in my closet for now because I'm loving the extra space on my desk with the Huion (since I work from home a couple days a week it's not as cumbersome). I'm curious to see how the colors affect me once I start getting in to painting (I feel like I'm going to have to print out the art to check).

Really glad to see a proper long term review of these newer Huion tablets. I've been considering the 16 inch version, but I was curious about the initial activation force of the pen. Are you able to do featherlight touches with it? Like can you make a mark with the only the weight of the pen or does it require some force to activate?
@TaylorStine
@TaylorStine Жыл бұрын
I'm going to say - yes, I think so (it has featherlight touch). I just tried to put as little force as possible on the pen and it made a mark most of the time, but it was sort of hard to put such a small amount of force on it. I think it would be hard to notice the tiny amount of force you need to make it actually activate. Here's a video I just took of me trying this with the Hard Round brush in photoshop: imgur.com/a/uk1v8XY

@@TaylorStine Thanks for that. That might still be a deal breaker for me, but it does look like it is probably adequate. Just for the distinction, my Wacom 13 HD and my ipad/apple pencil would not skip at all under those circumstances. I tend to draw with an extremely light touch, so it is tough to judge without getting my hands on one. I really appreciate the reply and video.
@dragick5646

@@DaneMurdock if memory serve me right, the samsung tab s6 uses wacom emr technology too and I just did the test like Taylor and it's skipping too (tho correct me if im wrong). I don't think you can go that featherlight with the way one normally hold a pencil to draw. I mean wacom drawing experience is better (its the screen quality and grit (result in more control) that differentiate it but the price doesnt justify the niche in control for me) but initial activation force is not an issue unless youre purposely testing for it. I draw light and it's no issue for me tho I'm curious if you hold the wacom pen the same way and dont really put pressue on it, just featherlight drags, would it skip or stay consistent. If so then it's another pro on wacom I'll have to consider on my next buy.
@DaneMurdock
@DaneMurdock Жыл бұрын
@@dragick5646 I have a samsung galaxy book 12 that uses Wacom EMR. There is a distinct difference between the S-Pen on all samsung devices (phones/tablets/laptops) and the cintiq stylus/apple pencil in terms of activation force. I have a damaged wrist, and I draw with a super light touch. Drawing with my Samsung is much more painful over time than my other devices because I need to be more deliberate with the amount of pressure I use. I would say for most people, this is not an issue, but it is for me specifically.
@dragick5646
@dragick5646 Жыл бұрын
@@DaneMurdock thank you for clarifying, well that's one additional pros to the wacom I'll have to consider when upgrading, tho by that time, I hope huion or other competitors catches up so there won't be a difference in drawing experience, just a difference in specs, material...or wacom gets better ergonomics (destroy the annoying fan! lighter weight and thinner bezels, just add a side magnetic tray that works like the pen clip) and better pricing.

I just left a message about why I smashed my savings and got the Cintiq,on an older comparison video you did,but I’m mad about it so… I had 2 huion tablets fail on me, one just out of warranty one after a month, same fault. ‘The USB device not recognised” of death. Tried replacing the cable on the first one, the second one is just going back. I got the Cintiq on sale for £400 cheaper than the RRP…Still not cheap but if it lasts it’ll work out cheaper than having to spend half the price 2-3 times more often. I’m looking to get 6-7 years investment out of it.

Thank you for the review! I want to buy this tablet, but I'm worried about two things. I read a review where the author says that this tablet has a 2200 nits of brightness, which means it is not bright enough in a modern standards. I'm worried about it because i'm usually use my MacBook on almost full brightness. Do you feel a lack of brightness with this Huion tablet? And another question is about the pen. I read the review where artist says that with this pen you have to press harder to start the drawing. He says that he like to draw with minimal pressure when you can draw without pressing on the screen but simply under the influence of the weight of the pen. And he says that this tablet will not start to draw with such a light pressure, so this is a deal breaker for him. I think i like to draw with a bit of pressure, but still a bit of worried after his words. Have you ever experienced discomfort because you have to push harder on a screen than you would like? Sorry about a bit stupid questions, but i really like this tablet, but i didn't have a chance to try it before buying.

The only noticeable difference between Huion new PW517 (on 4k models) vs Wacom Pro pen 2 is the pressure curve, which you can change in the setting. The felt nibs are made from paper, so you might need to replace it once per month for frequent usage. The cintiq companion uses pro pen 1, so the new huion pen is better since it's really similar to wacom pro pen 2. The 4k is 100% worth it if you have the budget, you don't have to zoom in for details which helps saving a lot of time. The Kamvas pro 24 4k has better report rate and response time than Kamvas 22 plus. I think it is worth the upgrade if you can afford it.

@DraconicA5
@DraconicA5 Жыл бұрын
@@octopioctopus it's about pixel density. Place your phone next to your current monitor to see the stark difference between low and high pixel density. A 24" 4k resolution monitor has 184 PPI, while a 22" 1080p monitor has 102 PPI. Even at a normal drawing distance, you can almost see no pixel. Because your eyes can read text as small as on your phone, you don't need to zoom in much. The high pixel density also allows you to notice minor errors on your canvas and clean it up faster. On Windows, you can change the UI scale, which will not affect the quality of your photo or the PPI of your canvas but will make the UI easier to see, just like on your phone. The only downside is that a good computer is required to process everything in 4k. You're good to go if your PC has at least 4 cores and 8GB of RAM.

I do have an Nvidia 2080 TI and an Intel CPU so maybe AMD is part of the problem. I think the full specs are in the description. What kind of issues?

Hi, i dont know if this helps but i too had problems with AMD and had to return my new laptop. TLDR huion doesnt seem to work with AMD sometimes due to the drivers. This was a few years back and i asked everywhere about this problem, including a huion support group on facebook. No straight answer. Disabling HDCP in the Radeon settings seems to work now when i looked it up online.

@@velvety6728thanks for responding to this. I have no idea what Radeon Settings are or HDCP, but you’re saying it fixed the problems with your Huion? Secondly, you’re saying it was the same for you? Nobody could recommend you a computer that was good for the Huion tablet? I can’t believe how frustrating and difficult this has been. Let me know where you ended up with it, and thank you.

@@Ryan_Gutz I misunderstood your comment? Any computer is fine with a screen tablet, as long as it has an hdmi port and an extra usb...Its practically a monitor. If using the HUION 24 4K, im unfamiliar with monitor resolutions but its best to check what cards handle 4K...if youre going to be doing more than art. The problem i thought you were having was specifically with the AMD graphics card. Like mentioned i had to return my laptop. But like TaylorStine, rn I have a PC with a Nivida GPU + Intel CPU (with intergrated graphics.)

I respect the decision, but I would NEVER downgrade my Cintiq Pro tbh. I will say this thing is huge and unwieldy. The fan noise is a non-issue since it's so quiet, idk anyone who complains as much as youtubers with fan noise. I have actually gotten to ujse the Kamvas pro 24- and I agree the color temperature is warmer, not sure if you can correct it in the settings though ?

Where do you live? Is it a cold country? My Cintiq Pro 24 had the two main fans turned off from the end of september until today (april 22nd) when the indoor temperature reached 23 C. It was reasonably silent during the winter when the indoor temperature was around 21 degrees Celsius. But my working space is very quiet, I have a silent pc and an excellent hearing so I could still hear the one fan spinning inside the Cintiq. The noise level is annoying now that all the 3 fans are spinning and it will be absolutely unbearable during the summer when it gets hotter inside.

"No fan noise" That's such a massive advantage Huion and XP-Pens have over these big ass Wacoms. I used to have a XP-Pen Artist 24 and it didn't have any fan noise, while remaining completely cool. Now I have a Wacom Cintiq 24 Pro and this shit can get so fucking loud, it's ridiculous. And that's with the settings for better cooling off, which would usually make it loud. People should not underestimate how annoying fan noise can be, if you're not constantly listening to music or whatever.

One thing I took away from this: Don't have kids around tablets LOL. I'm too freaked out to let anyone slap a pen on the screen. Having owned the Kamvas 22 Plus I'd have to ask, what was the colors like exactly? Cause on the 22 Plus it was rather weird. The greens were neon, the blues just weren't blue enough, and the reds were REAL RED, the nice thing was the blacks were black and sharp as can be. But the issue was those colors. It's impossible to do anyhting about it and calibrating it can only go so far with how it's set up. Is this the same way? I'm hardpressed on getting a Kamvas Pro series. The difference in price for Canada isn't exactly the best. it's almost more worth it to save the few hundred bucks and get a Cintiq Pro 24. Using the Cintiq 22, while the colors are definitely not the best, it's still closer to what I'd expect I'm picking than anything. Definitely not worth the HUGE price jump from 22 Plus to this, BUT... Colors? I guess? Cintiq is STILL top-notch when it comes to the WAY more important, FAR more important than Pressure levels: Activation Force. Not many people understand or even think about it. They hear Pressure sensitivity and assume it's great for ALL ranges. Using the GT19 Huion model I understand just how important such a thing is. The less force it requires the more you can take advantage of w/e pressure levels they offer from the lowest to highest ranges. Kamvas 22Plus definitely felt great, and the parallax was damn-near 0. Hopefully Wacom does another "cheap alternative" and reduces parallax.

Hi Taylor, and everyone else who has a Kamvas Pro 24. Does anyone have issues where (moments arise where when your pen makes contact/taps onto the monitor, the "hit" does not register)? I've had FRUSTRATING moments where I am tring to click on layers and the huion and pen do not communicate. I've had this Huion product for two years and it continually does this. It happens even when I try to pause and play youtube videos. Then my other MASSIVE frustration is when there are moments where I temporarily switch from the pen and try to use mouse while using Photoshop or other software like Premiere or even 3D. The mouse will fly off and into the top left corner of the screen or the bottom right corner of the screen. I HATE it when that happens. Does the Wacom Cintiq do detrimental quirks like i am experiencing with the Huion? I have all drivers updated and no other variables to cause this. Please, if someone has experience with this or can verify that the Wacom will NOT behave like this, I will get the Cintiq. Appreciate anyone who bothers to reply. Thank you all.

I haven't experienced the "no hit" issue 😕. The only time I've seen unusual behavior with both the Cintiq and the Kamvas is the pressure sensitivity will occasionally not work on random pen strokes. It happens with both tablets, so I'm not sure. The only other time I have similar issues is when I have ZBrush and Photoshop open at the same time, but nothing like the "no hit" issue you described. Maybe try purchasing a new pen, or inserting a new nib? I've had really good luck with the Huion paper like nibs. If the nib is loose (my toddler throws the pen a lot) sometimes weird things happen. I haven't had the mouse thing happen either. I wonder if the issue you're having is related to the mouse you're using. Maybe the drivers are conflicting with the pen tablet drivers. I use the Razer Basilisk Ultimate and have had good luck. Or maybe switch up your USB connection cables?

Sorry man but this Huion is no where close to the cintiq pro. I bought this one and sent it back. Full of connection issues with the mac and color calibration issues as well. Not to mention no touch controls and the edge near the bezel has pointer tracking issues. If the new cintiq was 10/10, the Huion would be a 5/10.
@DraconicA5
@DraconicA5 Жыл бұрын
A $150 color calibration tool could easily correct the color issues. Rather than spending an extra $1,000 USD. I did a lot of research before buying this one, and it is way better than my expectation. If Wacom is 10/10, then this Huion should be at least 9/10. I disable the touch input on my old Cintiq Pro because it is inconvenient. On Wacom, touch input has never been a good thing. Its palm rejection is extremely poor implemented. And why would you want to use touch on MacOS? Touch input on MacOS is extremely poor in comparison to all other operating systems. The Cintiq Pro also has poor pen tracking at the edge. I believe you are lying about using Cintiq Pro and purchasing Huion. Wacom is still superior, but Huion is not nearly as bad as you claim. If you have the cash, Wacom is a no-brainer. However, if a professional does not have a large budget, Huion should be a better choice.
