I became a fulltime artist half a year ago and I can't stress enough how important it is to have a large drawing space. While studying at university, I would use a 22" wacom cintiq on campus and I also bought myself a small 13" cintiq for travel. That small tablet is what I use now and it's often really annoying having such a small screen. I'll be setting money aside to get the Cintiq pro 24. It's quite the investment, but I feel like my neck, back and eyes will thank me in the long run.

I came here from your tablet showdown video and I appreciated how straightforwards you were with the review while sneaking in some dry humor. It was clear and well structured. I couldn't make a decision just from that video alone but I ended up doing what you did: I bought the 24" tablets I was considering and returned the one I didn't like. I ultimately ended up going with the huion ; the xp-pen had some issues that I couldn't deal with. To be fair, I might have received a defective product. This video was great too. I used to own a 13" cintiq, and I own a 24" huion now, but I draw... a lot. The larger screen size helps a lot ergonomically and with eyestrain, but artists just starting out probably aren't dealing with those issues yet. You're very frank about how and why the tech you choose works with your lifestyle! I hope you continue to do art-related tech reviews in the future.

I'm so happy to hear you got the right device! Thanks for your support, it means a lot. That's not the first time I've heard of issues like that, so maybe I just got lucky with the two I purchased. It sounds like the upgraded size was totally worth it for you then! It really is tough to beat the comfort of the big screen if you spend a lot of time drawing. If you're putting time into it, you deserve the best tools. There will be lots more to follow, thanks for the encouragement!

Out of curiosity, after 8 months of use, have you seen any change in the functionality of the Huion tablet? Or is it working as well as it did in the first week? It is hard to hear the opinions of long term users of Cintiq alternatives.
@octopioctopus2 жыл бұрын
@@flashytincan The Huion tablet still works well for me. The build quality has held up, and i really like the etched glass screen (no visible marks from the pen). There are some quirks to the software that change how you can use shortcuts with the pen vs a cintiq pen, but I’d happily recommend it for anyone looking for a cintiq alternative. That said, I haven’t had a chance to actually try the 24” or 22” cintiqs, so grain of salt and all that.

I do art professionally. I started on a crappy Wacom Bamboo. Very tiny, could never get used to it. Thought to myself I'd be able to do art way better if I had a cintiq (they cost more back then) My friend let me borrow her cintiq 13, and it turned out I was right. Using a screen was much better for me. I ended up getting my own and did art professionally with that. Thought that I could use a bigger one so I got a 22HD. Turns out that was honestly just more annoying than it was worth due to it's size, so I bought an iPad. Enjoyed using that much more than the 22HD, so I got a 16 HD (and a cheap Chinese screenless tablet) Turns out I can use the screenless tablet now without even practicing (I'm just better at art) and I'm currently enjoying the 16HD. The only thing that gives me a desire to upgrade is I wish I had touch on a desktop tablet, but I refuse to pay 3 thousand dollars for Wacoms touch (which was broken on my 22 HD touch) All of this is to say if you want to do art, you don't need expensive stuff. You CAN get used to a tablet with no screen even if it's hard. You can use a 13 inch tablet. You can use a 16 inch tablet. You can use a 22 inch tablet. For a long time I used a paper and a pencil. Don't sweat this stuff too much. Buy something you can afford and use it for a while. Eventually you will know if you need to upgrade or not. No review is ever going to be able to tell you that, they only tell you if the thing you are going to upgrade into functions or not. Don't fall for industry standard tricks or lies either. Wacom has been probably the most unreliable piece of hardware I've ever used over the last 15 years. You aren't purchasing reliability or anything of the sort with "industry standard" purchases, you are just getting what people are used to buying. So just buy what you can afford and start doing art.

This! I love the insight. I'm definitely the kind of person that falls for the "I just need to buy stuff to be good at this" trap. It's hard to avoid. I think my big problem is 2 things: I don't have any natural talent, and I have a hard time motivating myself to do something new. Somehow getting a fancy new piece of tech helped me with that (but it didn't all of a sudden make my art "good" or my studying "easier"). But now that I'm more confident, I've started to really enjoy sketching and drawing with just a plain white notepad and a .01 Micro nib. Thanks for this! I'm going to try out a regular pen tablet to see if I really even need the screen.

New screen tablet user here! I recently got the xp pen-artist 15.6 pro. Its my first ever screen tablet and its ALOT bigger then I thought it was. The quality is great and the workspace is alot bigger and more then enough! I suggest if your someone like me whos never had experiences with screen tablets i would get a 16inch. A 24inch could be overwhelming to new artists. But could be something you could look to invest into in the future!

Great call! When you put the 16" next to the 24" it looks small, but in reality once the 16" is on your desk it's huge. I don't know if the scale really showed through in the video, but it's really a good sized device. I'm tying this around my 24" right now because, as I mentioned, it dominates my desk. For me personally, if your going 22in or larger it needs to be VESA compatible (a cheap $30 arm has treated me well) so I can move the monitor out of the way and off my desk when I’m not using it. It also allows me to float the tablet above my keyboard (slightly covering the numpad) so that I still have access to my shortcuts comfortably and giving me comfortable access to my mouse under my display. That flexibility is something I slightly miss when working on a smaller pen display or my iPad. Then again I can only draw or work from my desk with that setup where as the other devices allow me to get a change of scenery.
@TaylorStine2 жыл бұрын
I'm with you -- being able to move the monitor out of the way is huge (I like my desk really empty). Wacom has a VESA mount converter that I bought so I'm going to give the arm a try -- I think it will be really helpful. Having a small keyboard (65%, Keytron K2) has been the only thing that has saved me. It' really easy to fit that size next to the tablet while it sits on my desk. But I really like the idea of having the mouse right under the display -- I hate having to reach across the tablet to get to the mouse (especially when I'm using ZBrush, where I'm always grabbing the mouse).

Ugh I'm somewhere in the middle. I work long hours but I'm not interested in a huge desk hog. I bought the 16" Huion 4k a few months ago and it just died on me after a little over 1 month of use (so I can't return it anymore and Huion support is painfully slow and annoying, I just gave up on it), I guess using it for more than 8 hours a day is just taxing to the small unit. Might be wishful thinking right now that they would do 4k 19-21" displays, as they're banking on users jumping to their higher tier product As usual though I love your humor and your videos, always insightful and helpful than most popular tablet review channels out there :)

@@TaylorStine Yeah, first few days was great. But started experiencing issues after 8+ hours of work-- it would glitch, flicker, then darken to an almost black screen. I would let it cool down for a few minutes so I can use it again (also tried other troubleshooting like plugging directly to wall outlet, changing refresh rate, cables etc to no avail).. it gradually got worse and eventually died. Huion after a month figured it was a cable issue, which was absolutely frustrating. Already behind in deadlines, I couldn't spend more time with the back and forth documenting everything and gaining nothing (I just wanted to ship back the product so they can test it all by themselves, but they won't give me an address), so this experience made me quite hesitant to try out other Huion products in the future. :/ Currently just waiting for XPpen to release a pro model with their new X3 pen (heard it was great, it uses digital signal instead of analog), or I might just bite the bullet with a 24" Wacom Pro since you really liked it as well. But I'm still looking forward to your 24" Huion review. Will be considering it (albeit quite begrudgingly lol) if it comes to par with the Wacom. I figured the 16"'s form factor might've come with a disadvantage with internals overheating under long use.

I would definitely go for the 24inch no matter what. With the 24inch being $2k, whats $200 more for an ergo arm (if you have the desk for it). The smaller tablet caused me to squint and strain my eyes a bit more. Plus i love being able to do giant strokes with the 24inch.

Me too, the 24inch is what I primarily use too when I'm working from my office. You're very right, the price gap really has closed when you look at the different size offerings. At this point it's a matter of how/what you use it for.

I wish someone made a 19-20" screen tablet, 1440p or 4K resolution, with express keys. Hate that Wacom abandoned this to sell it as an extra feature (that isn't part of the tablet frame) and also really really LOVE the dial on XP-Pen, seamless brush size adjustment on the fly. 16" loses real estate sharing space between the canvas and the panels (be that Photoshop, Clip Studio, Krita, or what ever your app of choice is). While 22-24" hogs up desk space and I found can cause arm fatigue traversing so much surface area. I mean there are 3" steps and less between 12, 13 and 16" tablets, but the only option from 16" is all the way up to 22 and higher? A 6" gap in every brand lineup.... nothing in between? 😮💨
@TaylorStine2 жыл бұрын
I'm with you there -- with the size of the bezels on the side of the tablet, they definitely could have fit in some express keys. I do have trouble adjusting brush size in photoshop -- I've taken just to right clicking and manually dragging, but that's kind of annoying. I have to say though, I've been using the Kamvas Pro 24" 4K tablet, and the fact that it has small bezels compared to the Cintiq Pro makes it feel significantly smaller on my desk. The screen doesn't feel as good as the Cintiq, but I still really like the Kamvas pro. It could be a good option for people who want a bigger tablet but don't want to sacrifice a ton of desk space. Plus, getting a 65% keyboard (Keytron K2) has made it much easier to use the keyboard along side the tablet.

Thanks for the video. It covered a lot of my queries. I've considered a lot of display tablets to replace my Huion Inspiroy Q11k v2. I've had Wacoms in the past (not display versions) and the last two have just fallen apart, the batteries didn't retain a charge and the bluetooth was iffy at best. (I use a MacBook Pro 2012 which has now reached retirement age given how many apps are telling me there isn't enough RAM to function properly). I agree desk space is one of my biggest concerns as I work in non-artistic industry and often have two laptops on the go plus iPad at the same time. But so is seeing the whole picture. I hate not being able to see my complete canvas when I draw or sculpt or model. I guess I will go for a 16in or thereabouts, be that a Huion or XP-Pen. As a person who uses a cintiq 13 HD and ipad pro 12.9 inch for professional and personal illustration/design/animation the cintiq pro 24 is certainly enticing… but for now it’s definitely more of a “use what you have and make the most of it” mentality as I save up for an upgraded desk set-up for when my current computer dies. However, I prefer the portability of an ipad over being chained to a desk. 😩
@TaylorStine2 жыл бұрын
I'm all about that mentality, it's so easy for me to get caught up in a furry of "just buy this thing it will make you better at X" (that's why I have an excess of climbing shoes and GIs). I have an iPad Pro as well, I got it because I was forced to go back to the office for work and I wanted to have a way to do some digital drawing on the go (and treat myself). Honestly I'm still learning how to use it correctly -- it's a different experience than using a large pen tablet. I have a tendency to just grab a sketchpad to do my drawing when I'm on the go, so I'm actively trying to force myself to draw on my iPad more.

I think it depends a lot on how much desk space you have and if you need to take your tablet anywhere. If you have the space and you only work in one spot, it's probably worth it to get the bigger size if you're practicing that much.

I upgraded from a 16 mobile studio to a 24, still waiting for it to arrive. I was attracted to the idea of working portable, but ironically it's rarer than I thought it would be. I never really had a issue quality wise on the 16in, but it would be nice zooming in and out less and seeing more. That is what usually throws off my proportions, it can go to 4k, but you have to really look close. I'm a tall guy, so even the 16 in looks small to me, I'm hoping the 24 in will feel normal. XD

I’m considering kamvas 22 plus but not sure if the 1080p resolution will make the pixels too visible or not

It might depend on which applications you're planning to use. When I use Photoshop, the smaller resolution isn't a big deal, but for an app like Zbrush the 4k resolution is much better. Hey great channel by the way I have a question is your huion on a laminated screen and if it is does it make it better to draw on compared to a non laminated screen? And also how does that tablet compared to your Wacom? The drawing experience I mean and do you have to turn the drivers on and off or can you use both at the same time? Sorry I just have a lot of questions based off of your setup thanks
@TaylorStine2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm actually not sure, I didn't make any changes to the screen, so whatever the factory default is (I don't think there's any lamination, but I could be wrong). The Cintiq pro screen definitely feels a little better, I feel like I can have a little bit of a softer touch when I draw. But once I was using the Huion for a little while I got used to it and really stopped noticing. The drivers hate each other, it's such a pain to switch the tablets. Maybe there's a way where you can get both to work, but when I wanted to switch I had to uninstall / reinstall each driver and restart my computer.

I am also in the corporate world and considering getting the new Cintiq 16 pro 2021 due to already having multiple monitors on my (quite large) desk for work. Now you're confusing me on whether I should get the 24 inch Cintiq instead, I easily spend more than 5 hours a week in detailed drawing. I'm not particularly fond of getting brands other than Wacom, simply because I had good experience with all 3 previous Wacom tablets I owned. The joy of working in the corporate world with disposable income but still worry about buyers' remorse...
@TaylorStine3 жыл бұрын
Someday I'll leave the corporate world behind and open up a movie studio that only makes practical effects movies, but for now, I have the same issues 😅. I've been testing out the new Huion Kamvas 24" Pro, and I have to say I never realized how much the bezels on the sides of the Cintiq Pro impact the size of the tablet. The Kamvas doesn't have the bezels and it feels so much smaller, it's really easy to store on my desk while I do corporate stuff. But I'm with you - all of the Wacom products I've used have had really good longevity and I do really like the way they feel. Honestly, it sounds like for your use case, you would probably be good with either, but if you're drawing that much the 24 inch is a good option. It is big, but like everything you get used to it on your desk. Either way, I don't think you'll have any regrets. You might consider too if you're going to use a stand with it, because the Cintiq pro doesn't come with one and the stands Wacom sells look like they need to be fixed in one place on the desk. Hope this helps! 😁

@TaylorStine2 жыл бұрын
So clip studio is what I have been using (and it works great),, but recently I started trying out Photoshop for a couple of reasons: 1. I just couldn't seem to get the brushes to look the way I wanted in Clip Studio. This is probably due more to my lack of clip studio skill than a problem with the software. 2. I'm starting to do more digital painting, and I'm more familiar with some of the tools to manipulate colors in Photoshop. 3. I do 3d renders and I want to start tweaking them and Photoshop seems the best software for that. But I have loved using clip studio

Yeah unfortuntately this is something I just mentioned in my latest review of Kamvas Pro 24" 4K. The colors do look a little bit off compared to my Cintiq (and main monitor). But I'm really not the best with color, so after a while I just stopped noticing it. You can adjust the color temperature, but I still couldn't get it quite right. I know how it is though - when you get a new tablet you really want it to be up to standard because you paid all that money for it.

Just getting back into art after many many years so the 16" should probably do me fine. If I could go back in time, I would get my degree in digital art. If you're only going to be drawing, you might consider an iPad pro. I've been doing a lot of my drawing on my iPad now that my little one is big, and I don't get as much time to sit at my desk. And if that's the case, you might want to get a pen tablet to do your sculpting -- I definitely don't need the screen when I sculpt. But if you want an all in one type deal, I would just go with the 16" -- you're probably going to be working in different environment when your in school, and it will be handy to bring your tablet along with you. It's weird because whatever size you get, your brain mentally adapts so you stop noticing it.
