It's not dead yet! POSIBLE mandolin restoration. My third mandolin restoration.

I like this restoration in particular. Many restoration projects on KZbin actually rebuild a device to a point where even the original manufacturer would not recognize it anymore. Your restoration does not hide the age or aging of the instrument and keeps much of the old character, patina and style. It is a beautiful piece of work. And very well recorded as well.

Thank you for bringing back to life this instrument. Even though some comments said it was originally a cheap instrument coming from a family with many children we also got a lot of joy and fun from the less expensive things. I am sure that if that mandolin could talk it would tell of many hours of fun and laughter and maybe even a love aria or two. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I got hold of an old, cheap mandolin that my grandfather had purchased new out of the Sears & Roebuck catolag. I restored the soundboard (cracks) made a new bridge (missing) and restrung it. I passed it down to one of my sons. It is now 100 years old at least. Wish I had your video to guide me through then.

A great restoration. I would add that if anyone watching is ONLY replacing fretwire, a heat gun isn't the best tool, as it will damage the finish.(In this example, it didn't matter, as the finish was being replaced). Instead, a soldering iron run a couple of times along the old fretwire is enough to melt any adhesive before removal. Give Tom an ear scrootch from me.

It is fair to point out that this instrument is not a "mandolin", but a "French flat mandola with 4 double strings". Having said that, the recovery of the instrument is truly satisfactory, the effort is commendable and the result is more than evident. The final appearance and finish remain rather rough but, I repeat, for an instrument destined for landfill, the result is excellent.

@@Restomaniac I always find it really difficult to get a balance. Something can have zero economic worth, but have sentimental value for a person. But sometimes the cost of repair is just so huge, I have to tell people it’s probably not worth it. But always their choice.

Hello! How do you determine when to use leather glue and when to use PVA?
@Restomaniac3 ай бұрын
Hello. It is necessary to use skin glue on antique pieces and musical instruments. It is a natural and traditional adhesive. It bonds very firmly and dissolves easily during restoration. PVA adhesives are frequently used in wooden frames in more modern parts where much more durability is required. Compared to its grades, its water resistance is very high.

I am sure this instrument was not stellar quality from day one. Therefore because of the extent of the repairs on the top especially, I may have opted to use a 2 part professional epoxy on the inside (underside of the top and inside the bottom, to add additional strength to the wood. When I say professional quality I am not referring to the stuff you buy at Home Depot.I did this once on an antique guitar , and it did not effect the resonance to any noticeable degree. But like I said It probably did not have a really top notch quality sound even when new, and I am sure even though you did a great job restoring it's appearance, it will never be recording quality , if even playable today.

The original top is in terrible condition, the wood is too rotten. This means that it is soft and the soundboard has low quality factor, which is bad for the sound. Considering that there is another top from the same model, but in much better condition, I would use it entirely.
