ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZbin and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

The electric ramps on the sheep truck is cool. I’m sure the trucks size works for good on smaller roads and fits well on ferry’s. I’ve found when treating mastitis, treatments are more effective when the ewe is brought into the barn as early as possible to be easily caught and properly looked after. Antibiotics & anti-inflammatories are only part of the treatment. Treatment of mastitis is time consuming. Warm moist compresses placed on the udder often. During early on set is best. The compress helps soften the blockage and open the milk ducts. I try to get the milk flowing by hand milking the ewe. Sometimes some milk and the Chucky stuff comes out. Antibiotics are started and I’ll get off label use of today tubes to help treat. If she still has lambs on her I start supplementing the lambs. The ewe should also be place on a reduced dry ration that has low nutritional value. To help easy the milk production.

Yeah there are some pretty narrow roads to navigate around in the UK, so guess the lorries are the size that suits. Agree that there are a lot of ways we can help the ewe with mastitis as apposed to just using antibiotics they need a bit of care too.

They do soon grow on, the lamb with the broken leg is doing great and although maybe didn't heal perfectly it doesn't bother him now, Lizzy goes around taking pictures of all the lambs she remembers from lambing time for some problem they had and how they are doing so well now😂

Welcome back, Cammie! Andy will not be crouching down inside the sheep lorry in 20 years - tell him to enjoy having young knees while he can (voice of experience!) The lambs look wonderful - healthy, very well fed. I’m sorry about the ewe with mastitis - I imagine you’ll send her to market the way Sandy Brock does - an animal has to contribute economically or it has to go.

I was thinking of Sandy Brock as well. What BOTH channels share is the realities of livestock farming. Each animal must contribute - some might be termed “pet lambs,” but that just means they got more hands on work after delivery, til they were weaned and taking care of themselves. Still, I can sympathize with the ewe with mastitis, as I know first hand how it feels ( suffered through this after nursing my own son). I’m glad I wasn’t sent to market myself🤣!

Great video Cammy, you talking about leaving wool in the field as not worth anything , well I have bought myself a new downie for my bed, I did a bit of research and the wool one came up trumps for me, reasonable price, light weight, does summer/winter so no changing downies over, it does not harber bed bugs for some reason they can’t live in wool. I think the wool board is missing a trick here they should be advertising there products. I just love my one would buy it again, by the way your lambs look great they don’t half thrive especially on some good grass.

I think the mastitis issue needs to be addressed the same way the dairy industry does - no daughter is keep of a mastitis ewe and no ram is keep for breeding of a mastitis ewe - you breed out the problem - the ewe and her lambs go to town - the only reason that you left the wool in the paddock was because it was not worth anything - the sooner the wool prices get to a good level again the better - it is costing farmers to get the wool off as there is no money in the wool at the moment

No lambs from this mob will be kept for breeding as they are all bred for meat, as to know which ram it is would be interesting to know if it was the same ram but we wouldn't be able to find out this year. Yes if the wool paid my rent like it used to many years ago I would have had more incentive to take it to the wool board 😂

Just got my sheep’s sheared today. Great shearer...the only one in the area! The only trouble he had was with my 350+ lb ram aptly named ‘Maelstrom’.

Milk seems totally normal but she won’t let him feed. Hope both yours and mine survive! Out of curiosity, what antibiotics do you use for it?

Thanks Anna. Aye mastitis is no fun for the sheep, Orf being one of the factors too, but not something we've had here (touch wood). we use Pen and Strep as per label instructions.
