It’s Not Impossible, Just Difficult. This is Why!

Driving with Autism isn't impossible. I am an autistic driver, and while I experience some challenges when driving, I've taken several long trips up and down the east coast here in the US without any trouble. Driving a car as an autistic person is what I discuss in this video. I go through some of the challenges I have faced and what I did to overcome them. Let's discuss this further in the video!

I always make sure that I leave more breaking distance from the car in front just in case my brain goes into daydream mode, I also have to remember that I’m easily distracted if a passenger is talking to me as it take’s away my focus from the road trying to process what they are saying rather than concentrating on my driving and lastly I have to be more careful when driving at night due to the glare of lights from oncoming vehicles/sensory issues. I’m sure there are other things but this is my main difficulties, good thought provoking video 👍

​@@leosthrivwithautism The craziest thing to add was that I did not know that I had Autism until I was diagnosed at the age of 42 after what can only be described as a breakdown, but I always knew that there was something wrong with me as far back in childhood as I can remember. Finding out what caused all the issues I have was a great relief.

I wasn’t diagnosed till I was 20 If I remember correctly I’m 38 about to turn 39 soon. So i can definitely understand. I too knew I had something going on and found freedom as soon as I got the diagnosis. It’s why I make an attempt as best as I know how to try and remove the stigma around getting diagnosis and show how there is nothing to worry about. This way people get the freedom they need. They get the help and tools they need. And a better quality of life too. It’s all just sharing experiences, sharing information, my perspectives and points of view, and giving advice. And if people ever disagree it’s ok. I’m not expecting everyone to agree with everything. And that’s the beauty of a good conversation. It helps someone in their own decision for what they believe is right for them. I’m glad that you were able to get the diagnosis and get the help you needed! 👍

I can relate. The difference with me is that usually when I establish routes anywhere it's hard for me to change. It drives alot of anxiety for me specifically. But I've been learning how to cope. I've learned sometimes change is a good thing. But my entire life I've always rejected change, I have a fear of it. And the fear comes from the unknown. I don't like the unknown personally. As an autistic person, i dont care if other people speed, but when people hog the left lane or unnecessarily stop at roundabouts it annoys me.

I had already been driving for half my life, with no real issues, by the time I figured out that I was autistic, so, no, to answer the opening question, I've never wondered if it was possible to drive with autism. 😄

I have Asperger’s. I can drive a car just fine, as long as it’s an automatic transmission! I hate stick shifts. They do nothing but cause me problems! They are confusing, distracting unnecessary and useless to me. I used to be a Truck Driver in the US Army and as a civilian. I had automatic transmissions in the Army and civilian vehicles. I won’t drive a stick shift ever again! They break down. They stall, roll back on hills and cause a lot of other problems. They are hard to drive on icy roads. That’s dangerous! I ficken hate them!

I agree. Plus with innovations they aren’t the slush box’s they used to be. Big clunky slow automatic transmissions. Today many are small and light. They have rev match technology and you barely feel gear shifting. (Unless it’s my car, it has some issues with shift hesitation and some slippage.) But overall the benefits most people used to say was only achievable on a stick is now achievable on an auto as well. So I agree with your comment! 👍
