The adversary likes to twist things, turn them into worthless platitudes that we repeat. Phrases like, "It's never to late to repent" lead to complacency. I love this thought by Elder Christofferson clarifying that indeed it can become too late if we procrastinate our repentance. I'm grateful for the counsel to make it a daily practice.

I've prayed for others to repent, so often, and have understood that God won't trespass on agency. He speaks the best to others. But I strive not to let my anguish over others not repenting blind me to my own opportunities to repent. I need it just as much as they do, and so many more mistakes can be made by focusing on the reasons why another person should repent while overlooking that the same gift is there for me. Through Jesus Atonement I can be healed and strengthened from matters that weigh me down, and through Jesus Atonement I can be freed from my own failings.❤

I like this message. Thank you. I took the counsel of daily repentance to heart. However, now that I'm getting older, I try to repent in the moment. If I wait til evening, I sometimes forget my day's poor choices. So, I keep in mind this scripture and continually guard my thoughts. "...if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not." Mosiah 4:30. Satan can send bad thought darts. If I watch myself and catch them before entertaining them, they are not mine. I can reject wrong ideas and repent in a running conversation with God all day long.

So grateful for this message! Too much I have seen within our own church the false idea promoted from members that God is so loving that it doesn’t matter what we do in this life nor if we repent but that God will save us all eventually in the celestial kingdom no matter what. This video is refreshing in the way it re-aligns us all to God’s word that yes he loves us but there are very real, eternal consequences for choosing to reject Jesus’s incredible gift of repentance. What we do in this life truly does matter.

I think one of the ways it can be described is when a parent keeps warning kids as they age that when they keep doing certain things that are likely to be harmful or are outright harmful (e.g. hitchhiking or smoking), there can come a time when the parent can't -- not won't -- help them anymore. If the kid gets into the wrong car with the wrong person or gets lung cancer, what is the parent to do? They love them, but can't save them from themselves: in fact, we believe that repentance is important because we could end up rejecting His grace by judgement, which is what will happen for most people who don't repent.

We definitely need to hear more of this. I feel like there is so much teaching around being more loving that we forget that real love is making sure we understand the consequences of taking things too lightly. I hear people say all the time that you have until your deathbed to repent and that's simply not true!! We can't live a life full wickedness to say "sorry" at the last hour and have God give us a high-five and say all is well. Alma teaches fire and brimstone for a reason. He's warning us to always be ready in the event that our last day has an unexpected end to which we had no time to make things right. There really is such thing as too late. It's all over the scriptures.

I think God is always ready to forgive. It’s never too late for him but I think if we don’t act upon the prompting to repent, the desire to repent may pass and it becomes too late for us because we no longer respond to the stirrings of the spirit.
@BakingSoda4U12 күн бұрын
That's one way to look at it. I think it might also have to do with the fact that we all will die some day, and also the fact that when we are before the Lord in the final day, we will not be able to repent there.
@lisahelen777310 күн бұрын
Yes, that's called the point of no return and is found in Helaman 13:38 But behold, your days of probation are past; ye have procrastinated the day of your salvation until it is everlastingly too late, and your destruction is made sure; yea, for ye have sought all the days of your lives for that which ye could not obtain; and ye have sought for happiness in doing iniquity, which thing is contrary to the nature of that righteousness which is in our great and Eternal Head. 3 Nephi 27: 10 And if it so be that the church is built upon my gospel then will the Father show forth his own works in it. 11 But if it be not built upon my gospel, and is built upon the works of men, or upon the works of the devil, verily I say unto you they have joy in their works for a season, and by and by the end cometh, and they are hewn down and cast into the fire, from whence there is no return. 12 For their works do follow them, for it is because of their works that they are hewn down; therefore remember the things that I have told you. “Sin is intensely habit-forming and sometimes moves men to the tragic point of no return. Without repentance there can be no forgiveness, and without forgiveness all the blessings of eternity hang in jeopardy. As the transgressor moves deeper and deeper in his sin, and the error is entrenched more deeply and the will to change is weakened, it becomes increasingly nearer hopeless and he skids down and down until either he does not want to climb back up or he has lost the power to do so.” - President Kimball, (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 83) “As the time of repentance is procrastinated, the ability to repent grows weaker, neglect of opportunity in holy things develops inability.” - Elder James E. Talmage, (Articles of Faith, p. 114) And "However, the free agency possessed by any one person is increased or diminished by the use to which he puts it. Every wrong decision one makes restricts the area in which he can thereafter exercise his agency. The further one goes in the making of wrong decisions in the exercise of free agency, the more difficult it is for him to recover the lost ground. One can, by persisting long enough, reach the point of no return. He then becomes an abject slave. By the exercise of his free agency, he has decreased the area in which he can act, almost to the vanishing point." Marion G Romney - The Perfect Law of Liberty - 1981 General Conference

Great message. With regard to Emergenncy Preparedness, I can carry the metaphor forward a bit... Repenting about being unprepared is like having to borrow food & water from a neighbor because you passed up the opportunity to store your own. Procrastination was compared in his message to waiting too long to plant crops and missing the growing season altogether. This is much more DIRE. In E-prep, I would compare this to having not kept your phone charged or a blanket in your car when you slide on ice off the road into a ditch at night. Dire = Extremely serious

As I've been studying the temple more deeply--even the ancient Tabernacle & customs of the Israelites with their 7 festivals--I've learned about the Jewish Wedding Feast (obviously connected to the Wedding Parable and also the 10 Virgins Parable); I'm seeing now how often Christ/scripture alludes to Him as the bridegroom. Here it is in D&C 45: as Summer ended and the white fields were harvested, the bride would've been awaiting her bridegroom to arrive on an unspecified day in the middle of the night, and the bridegroom arrives "in an hour when ye think not," so don't procrastinate your vigilant preparation. These allusions are like parables with obvious surface level content to edify the listener, but there's soooo much more beneath that surface for those with eyes to see & ears to hear. Check it out 🤙 Y muchísimas gracias, Elder Christofferson! Un abrazote de Texas 😊

I think it’s also important to think on it this way: we talk about peoples in the scriptures being “ripe” with iniquity and thus ready for destruction. Sometimes “too late” means you’ve put off repenting so long that now you no longer want to, now you’re doing such awful things that you’re the worst you, personally, could ever be, and you have changed so much you now refuse and don’t want to change. Of course, even the absolute worst people can have a moment where they realize how far they’ve gone, and they decide to turn back to God, but I wouldn’t want to procrastinate so long that now my goals and wants have changed so drastically that I no longer want God in any way shape or form…

Going through a divorce and it sucks going to church now... Everyone who knows won't look at me anymore, they try to avoid me... I didn't cheat on, beat, yell, put down or abuse my wife. Yes, I wasn't perfect, and I've been going through the repentance process, but the supposed righteous indignation from ward members is miss appropriated.. My wife is leaving me for pretty normal marital strifes... I feel like it's worse to let people guess why she is leaving me, than to just tell everyone. Funny how one word change adjusts the context of the message. "Never too late" can feel like we are allowed to procrastinate until we hit some future "ready" state when we'll finally do the thing we've been telling ourselves. But "not too late" keeps the reality of an eventual end more present in the mind and what is an end, existentially speaking, if not motivation to stop procrastinating?

Find the missionaries of our church, and pray and read the Book of Mormon to gain a testimony and go to church. We will always have to repent in our life, but we must continue to do these little things to help us remain faithful it is because of the atonement of Jesus Christ that we can do it.
@3blenders11 күн бұрын
Repentance enables Agency, the Lord enables it by His Atonement. Without the atonement Agency would not be possible and actually God would seize to exist without the atonement, and without the Agency that we have, to chose him. Choosing Him (them, God and the Lord and the Holy Ghost), is the worshipping act of bearing testimony to which the Holy Ghost is essential. The Holy Ghost is also the "fact checker God", without him, Agency is not possible and the Atonement would not be possible, and therefore God would seize to exist. And so, repentance is not only a right, but also the act of worshipping all THREE, the Trinity, and the God Father, Boss God - all three are one in purpose, yet three individual Gods dependent on each other, each with their explicit roles. Last but not least, I have a question: Does a prophet need to repent? And does it need to be public? Is admitting having made a mistake a liability for the Church Corporation and a necessity? Joseph Smith repented publicly, one of which is even canonized into scripture. Are there people that are exempt of repentance? Does it mean, when one refuses to repent, he denies the Holy Ghost, and the Atonement, and is quasi threatening the existence of God? Meaning, repentance is not just a self-interested act to further one's soul and redirect one's course to correction, but it's primarily an act of worship, signifying that we are supporting the Lord in establishing God's throne, and a testimony of which, because that very act of repentance is just that - a testimony, is an act of forgiveness and testimony in which according to Joseph Smith one's sins are forgiven while also that same is recorded in Heaven and Angels are rejoicing.... Just a little sightseeing trip of mine of what I see and experience. I love The Three and My Agency. You can't support agency if you do not repent.... get it? The very belief is basically putting your money where your mouth is. These two cannot be separated. Repentance and Agency go hand in hand, and so go all Gods each with their important contributing complimenting roles they have in the Trinity.
