Had to come back to this to share my experience: Being a left leg lead, this concept of "jabbing with your lead hand" or leading with the lead hand is honestly a concept that should be experimented more. Went to wrestling practice today and mid way through practice I would just have my left leg up and jab with my left, leaving my right basically loose. Drilling defense, I noticed that I'm a bit quicker and more confident in defending my partner's penetration whenever he shot. If they attempt to shoot, just use your lead forearm and use your other hand as counter offensive. I believe you can do a lot of damage with just this concept if practiced.

Thank you very much for making this video. It's always fascinating to see someone who truly understands the art dig into concepts that are widely accepted as basic knowledge in the art and that go unquestioned. I'm a judoka transitioning to nogi jiu-jitsu and just yesterday I had an NAIA wrestling medalist instruct us to never reach with the lead hand when wrestling. Always very enlightening to see a well substantiated argument against absolute statements like that. This strongly reinforced the fact that the "When, how, why" are always significantly more important than the "What".

Great channel. So many bjj concept videos but not enough wrestling concept ones. There needs to be more teaching on wrestling intangibles/tactics/strategies etc.

This reminds me of the boxing equivalent old saw: never throw a lead right, always jab & cross. In UFC we see fighters suddenly launching stunning rights from nowhere. That would have been trained out of them by a boxing coach.

Most of the time in the UFC, entry with a cross is set up with takedown threat. Many wreslters and grapplers fake a takedown into the cross like khabib did to mcgreggor.

in open stances like southpaw/orthodox its very common to throw the power hand without a proper jab in front of it

I've always thought teaching to not reach with your lead hand is great for beginners, youre effectivley removing your down-block and opening yourself up for a hi crotch when doing so. After enough time you build up an understanding of the risks you take with how you decide to reach or tie-up.

Agreed. This was in my bag when I wrestled. Came out of retirement and currently assisting high school. I see it. When doing a little mat time I simply use lead post and hand fight thru the disruption. Kids get a bit confused and I explain the same concepts. Rear hand post is not a mantra on our team.

Lots of videos coming out on this recently. Defend with the hand that matches the lead leg of your opponent. So righty righty, go ahead and lead with your right hand.

I see the mistake of over reaching, with both hands. Also the high level wrestlers are using while keep solid position and being in stance. I believe you can and should reach and post, but it's a tool needed to be used properly. You're very much right

Great vid. The "lead hand maneuver produces a rather stale boring event, It even looks like a stall. Takes some of the fun out of watching the event, IMHO. Therefore please tell me how I am wrong?

But why don't they shoot when their opponent reaches with a lead hand? What is it that stops them from shooting. When I was taught wrestling they taught me that the lead hand could be pushed up and away for easy access to a single leg. I've seen it hundreds of times in bjj when someone reaches lead hand and an experienced wrestler is their opponent they get taken down with a single. I'm not saying you should never do it, but everytime I do or I watch someone do it, it always feels risky. What exactly is the mechanic? Is it the distance from the opponent, or is it disrupting their sight by putting your hand on their eyes?

I wrestle but I'm no expert. I think you can use it when the arm is fully extended because the distance it creates makes up for the lack of defence, as you have extra time to react to a shot. IDK though there may be another reason.

hello, am from russia. if you play against a counter wrestler you cant shoot if his hand is close to your body he can manipulate your movement . usually if am a point up am not looking to score more am am just waiting to counter attack, and try not to get fouled by staying passive active .

In addition to these nice answers; it is assumed the lead hand can easily be timed and shoot underneath. Like anything, if you’ve practice the technique the lead hand post can actually follow the head as they try to shoot-your opponent then has to reach up and slap the hand away before they shoot which is a dead giveaway they’re about to generate offense-this removes any element of surprise-you’re now prepared for their attack which allows you to counter more easily. One of the many attributes of the lead hand! 😊

because in a right versus right scenario the left hand is actually the down block hand. this video draws the right conclusion but doesn't actually talk about killing the lead edge.

Idk who taught you this concept but I've trained with some of the best wrestlers in the history of the game. Including John Smith. And I was 3 year state champ. Never once heard this concept genuinely

What I heard is that it’s typically not smart to collar tie with lead hand without a set up. A lot of clinics I went to drilled the first point of contact is with ur off hand but that’s for when ur attacking. But I’ve seen a lot of pawing (which is what I call this lead hand action) throughout my wrestling career. Pawing like what Snyder does is different that growing for a collar tie with the less hand as first contact.

@@petifogger2340 i had a front head lock system so you could say regardless of what hand i was reaching with i was looking for an "attack" or baiting a shot for a sprawl giving me a free front headlock.

@petifogger2340 Жыл бұрын
@@cristianfairley4186 yeah that’s extremely valid. I was always long so I tried to stay away from tying up too much and would for low singles and picks. But to the guy’s point I think he mistook reaching with ur lead hand and just using ur lead hand like u said. Cause I see a lot of guys reach with that hand and that’s just easy outside singles for me or slide-by’s every time they reach. Idk I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt bc wrestling concepts are very new in the world of BJJ
