It's 1 degree Let's go snowshoeing!

Hello and welcome back, if you are new to the channel, my name is Marie and I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with my family and two cats. This is our first winter here and we are enjoying the adventure of living in a rural snowy area. Come along as I go snowshoeing on my land and have random conversations and Scruffy the cat makes a little cameo at the end. I'm glad you're getting all the snow, I don't think I have an inch in my yard. So my septic pipe update! I know you've been waiting with baited breath. 😂 So the pipe that runs from the toilet to the septic cannot be cleaned, the pipe cleaning guy and the plumber both think that the cast iron pipe has collapsed and or crushed just from years of use, freezing and thawing, etc. So the thought is that they reroute the pipe in the basement, and then run new pipe to the septic, and this will not be able to be started until spring, and will be extremely expensive. So it's going to be a challenge.

hi! I hate that you are dealing with that septic pipe, it does sound like an expensive and challenging fix, that is not fun. I hope they can get it worked out sooner rather than later but its hard to do things in the winter, like you said, Spring, ugh. do you have an alternate bathroom setup? having a septic issue and not being able to take care of it until the spring is a huge deal. that is not a good time my friend.

@marieintheUP we've got more than usual here but we had some warm days that's melted it away Kelly's Mothers grandparents were from Hancock, MI and we used to visit there and I loved it up there and they said their snowfall average was 258 inches/year.

@@jamescox7490 I wouldn't mind a bit of a melt to help reduce my snow piles, but it just keeps snowing. it is crazy how much snow the UP gets, we average around 130 a year but have already passed that this winter so its been a good snow year! Kelly told me about that, such a small world, it's very cool!

Marie, something to put on your to-do list for next fall. Take a 24-inch lopper and a small hand saw and walk through the woods in the back of your home and create some walking and snow shoeing trails. Mark the trails with a little spray of red or yellow paint. Remember to trim the branches high enough because you will be on ten to twenty inches of snow. When we lived in Michigan we had a marked 1 half mile, a one mile and a three-mile trail that we and all our neighbors used and maintained. You are doing great, love your attitude, have a great day.

hi! great to hear from you, how are you doing? I will add that to my to do list, I want a trail through the woods, its very wet in the summer, in some spots I may need to do boardwalks too. I think having the spray paint to mark the trail is a fantastic idea, I do struggle to find my way back sometimes when its all green and full of flowers and leafs on the trees.good tip on trimming the branches higher to account for the snow. thanks for your awesome comment!

Hi Marie. What a great way to spend the day. Looks like you have a good sized chunk of land. So, I love pumpkin pie, which I consider an autumn food, and since my birthday usually falls on the autumnal equinox, my "cake" is actually pumpkin pie, so that's kind of my birthday "thing." Birthday in Vegas sounds like fun, I might have to try that.

hi Joe! its pizza Sunday, and cheesy bread! happy groundhog day to you too, looks like Punxsutawney Phil says six more weeks of winter, yeah for more snow days! it is a little tricky in snowshoes, easier than walking in skis thankfully! luckily there is so much snow its a very soft landing! wow, mine is two days before yours, we are birthday twins!! happy early birthday to you!!! marble cake is delicious and pizza is classic for a birthday meal! Aren't you supposed to use ski or walk poles when snow shoeing? Those would have made it easier to get up. Lovely property you have there, very similar to Door County Wisconsin. My family has been concentrating on cleaning up the dead and fallen trees around that property for the past three years. Even bought a log splitter which they've got dozen or so cords of firewood piled up around the house. Thank you for bringing us along for the walk.

Thank you for the walk in the woods. I’m in the foothills of the Adirondacks, we have the low temperatures with not much snow registering abnormally dry on the drought monitor. I grew up in Michigan and traveled to the UP often. Maybe it’s time to come home.

The Adirondacks are beautiful, how cool you grew up in MI and spent a lot of time in the UP. I hope you get some more snow soon, if you don't the UP is always here, people keep moving out and we need people to stay and move in : ) you are always welcome here! it is an issue now with droughts, we had a drought this summer and some of my cedar trees really struggled, im glad we are getting so much snow this winter because I think it will help make up for the lack of rain. thanks for watching!

The snow looked very peaceful. I still haven't gotten any snow. It's going to be 60F here today. That's crazy. It was in the 50's all last week. I think that we are in a drought again. The local weather person said that we have had 1" of snow since October. I have been looking at sites to order some wild flower seeds for my pollinator garden spot. My backyard is very tiny. For my birthday, I like to have some German Chocolate cake. Once in a while, I will have some Angle food cake, with some strawberries. Since the weather is going to be so warm, I'm going to wash the car. Take care.

I hope you are having a good day, enjoy washing that car. it is warm for winter temps at 60's and no snow. a pollinator garden sounds so nice, I want to do that here too, with local seeds, really nature does that in the spring and summer on its own in my yard thankfully but I want more flowers everywhere because they make me so happy. do you have a raised flower bed for that or just all over since your yard is small? (easy to maintain though!). have fun!

@@marieintheUP I made a 4ft by 8ft flower bed that is about 1ft off of the ground. It's easy to mow the grass around it. I made the flower bed with landscape timbers. You can buy them in 8ft lengths, which works well because you cut one in half, and you have two ends of the flower bed. Blackeyed susan, and purple cone flowers seem to be what the butterflies like. Bees like lavender.

Marie, thanks for the fun video. Love those kitties. Chicago usually has a lot of snow, but not last year or this year, at least so far. It keeps skirting around us. I haven’t even used the big snowblower yet, only the little one 3 times. I spent about $125 for the big snowblower tune up and drive selector cable fix in the fall. I guess that was insurance of sorts for no snow. I debated buying a new battery EGO snowblower but opted for one more fix up for the big gas powered one.

You couldn't have picked a better place to fall. I took a nice fall last Fall while hunting Ruffed Grouse. I just laid there after looking up at the beautiful trees and sky. I needed a break as well. 😅 I'm not sure how many acres you have, but it would be cool to build a little getaway cabin, huh? Cut some nice trails. It's a beautiful little forest you have there. I love your cat cameos. Your braided hair was a puurrrfect toy! Lol. At the end, you missed an opportunity to snow angel, but the snow shoes would have been difficult to properly "angel."

I have 10 acres, I want more! I wish I had like a 100, someday! @marieintheUP the nice thing about the U.P. is CHEAP LAND! I have just 3 acres that I own. The homestead originally had 80 acres, so the big field near my house doesn't belong to me, but I sure enjoy it. My great grandfather cleared that field and had a farm with cows and a big barn. I sure wish I had all that now. I would call it "Jonathon's Ranch." Lol. I too, want a big spread. That would be so nice. Maybe someday. You can build a cabin, no problem. A little 8X12 maybe? One step at a time. First, pick a spot! Then cut a trail. Then, start gathering up materials. You can borrow my ATV and mini trailer! ☺️

@@Yooperglide you are right about that, it is going up here since I bought two years ago but it is still very affordable compared to other places, I keep tying to find a little waterfront land so I can put an off grid cabin there. wow 80 acres, that is nice! its good you only have to maintain the 3 but get to enjoy the big field by your house! how crazy, my grandfather was a farmer and had cows and pigs and chickens and grew corn and tobacco crops. Before my friend died 15 years ago, him and I would go up to his cabin in Ishpeming for snowshoeing trips. Miss him dearly. The woods look very close to what you were just walking through. Some years there would be a ton of snow. Once in a while we would find small tamarack trees that would be completely covered and would create air pockets that would cave in from under us. We would have to dig ourselves out of 3-4 feet holes.

@ you are so right about the snow melting in July haha, it has been snowing every single day, even when no snow is showing up on the radar, just snows anyway, I'm learning very quickly to just expect it to snow daily. was just out for a few hours moving snow, had a lot of fun and got a good workout! thats awesome you have 100 acres and got in when the getting was really good, I keep looking for a spot for a off grid water front cabin, but thats beeen challenging to find.

@@YooperSteveLF150 I am so not excited about the bugs, I think about how nice it is in the winter not having any bugs to deal with. Its so hard in the summer, the flies and mosquitoes don't stop, I wear some funny outfits and hats to deal with them lol. I bet it is beautiful having the river!

Hi Marie- Thank you for another enjoyable video. In my younger days I cross country skied and your woods are so similar to a park I went to. It always was nice to get back in the woods out of the wind, and it was beautiful on sunny days. And speaking of falling, getting up after falling on cross country skis could sometimes be quite hilarious, but you never counted the falls as long as you were able to get back up😊. As for birthdays, when I was a kid my mother would make whatever we wanted. Instead of cake I always asked for blueperry pie. Her pies were the best and blueberry was my favorite. I still try to get a blueberry pie, and although the store bought ones are not as good, they still bring back good memories. Have a great day!

Hi Marie! What a fun and beautiful reminder of the U.P. as a winter wonderland! It's absolutely gorgeous there. Snow covered evergreen trees always stir my heart. hi Istvan, it is sooo fun here, you are going to love it! it is snowing a lot today too, so more and more snow, right now I have 2 feet in my yard according to my snow gage! that is so kind that you want to send something for the videos I make, awe! no need to do that but also very kind of you! I don't have anything set up yet for receiving gifts as I hadn't considered that as a option, but how cool. Let me look into amazon locker or something similar and I will let you know. my bday is about a week : ) Sips are really good for building here you are right, are you going to do the build yourself or have a company build? @@marieintheUP Hi Marie, if your bday is in a week (how does it feel to be 27) it's very timely then I brought up the idea of sending you a present, not only for your hard work in filming, editing, entertaining us and making us smile, but also to celebrate your bday with you 🎂So, please give it serious consideration. I have 3 SIPS companies in mind. All 3 will deliver for self build and one will also build and assemble complete w/200amp elec svc, plumbing, siding, interior wall and floor completed at factory, SIPS R40. But there is still perc test, septic, digging a well, foundation, also what utilities are available. I wish to be entirely off grid, so solar will play a big part supplemented by wood water boiler and heat. For days w/o enough solar power, I do have a whole house gen that can fill up the battery bank. For internet, its $130 monthly for Starlink (I've heard good reviews). Maybe you can come and visit and help me build? Don't worry, I won't work you too hard. lol 😉What do you think?

I did look into an amazon locker and there are no locations that I can use around here, it says no lockers in your area lol, not too surprised but still. it seems like the only thing I can do is get a po box, something to look into at the post office. ohh nice on the companies that will deliver and one that will build and complete the utilities and all that, it is quite a job having all that done you are right and I find things move a bit slower in the UP, maybe not in that area though because you have all those WI companies too that can easily get there. I have heard good things about starlink, I have fiber internet, its only $70 a month and comes with a phone line and battery back up incase the power goes out, starlink may be better though! I love that you are building off grid! how wonderful. I would love to come visit and help, would be good for me to learn some new things!

They don't do SIPS. Since I live alone, it just might be prudent to have a smaller cabin. 2bed,2 bath + 1/2 lofts. Might go with Amish built Deerruncabins in Kentucky. I love the look of their cabins. $5,000 to ship to Esky. $91,000 728sq.ft. Then I only need to hire an electrician to tie into solar and plumber to connect to the well. They are a wood/SIPS hybrid. It would be less expensive overall for everything. Ur internet sounds perfect as is. In addition, I plan on building a large 3 car garage/shop. Looking forward to having a neighbor (even at 200 some miles away) and a friendly face. Bye!

hi Jason, hope you are having a good weekend! sweet Munising should have a lot of snow on the ground this week. you are going snowmobiling?! i'm jealous, have fun and be safe! there are quite a few trails around my area, mostly snowmobile trails, there are cross country ski and snowshoe trails all over that are about 30 mins to an hour away. thats why I tend to go on my land or with my neighbors on their land (they have cleared trails) but I need to go out now that the snow is deep in alot of places in the UP- thanks for watching!

You need some trekking poles, they help with xtra balance. I use the LEKI brand, they're the best! I would so set up my tent in those woods and stay there a few days in the silence. I love winter camping.

you are right they do help, I have snowshoeing and hiking poles, I never bring them but may, it doesn't hurt when I fall on the snow thankfully! It's funny you say that because in my 40 min random convo that I edited, I had a whole convo on wanting to camp out there because it is so quite and peaceful, I love winter camping too (Im not really into summer camping because it can get too hot and humid here). thanks for watching!

@@marieintheUP Thank you for asking. Chip is doing well. It is very cold in Jefferson County NY as well. Chip has been napping in front of the fire. They do not do well in the real cold even the Lab "Davie" I did not pick his name his shelter name was Dave we added the "ie" sounds a little cuter. Neither dog is good for very long in the snow their feet are very sensitive.

hi, you are right, I have ski poles and hiking poles and walking sticks, I may bring them next time. I take a different path each time I go, but I want to create a trail. in this video I followed the deer tracks and they went all over. at my friends property, they have a trail that we take, I don't fall there hehe but I didn't mind falling. thanks for watching!

@marieintheUP Packing some established trails makes for faster walking in the deep snow. The alternative is to hike with a friend and trick them into breaking trail while you follow. The deer and rabbits will gladly let you pack down the trails for them. You just have to duck for branches LOL.

Another story you will appreciate. When I am out in the woods I follow the Animal tracks because the deer know the easiest way through the underbrush. As I go I cut the hanging branches to make it easier for me to follow the path but I also feel like I am making it easier for the deer to navigate the woods. Doing what I can to help the deer out.

thats what I did in the video, I totally followed the deer tracks, on the way, but on the way back I followed my own path that I felt like going on and I fell hehe so there is something to what you are saying about it being easier for us and for the deer!

hi, I had thought that too since there are many companies in the UP and Canada that make sheds, but I checked into all of that and there would be a lot of land/tree clearing and dirt for fill needed to get something pre built into an area on my property out there. My land is very wet and not easy to build on. plus I have to get a permit and stuff approved for any of that even though I am rural (anything over 200sq ft in MI has to be have a permit), and my property taxes would increase. We will see, I already spent 2 summers trying to get someone to clear and bring in a shed, didn't get anywhere sadly. I have to deal with the log cabin this summer, have a lot to get done there, but someday!

hi! how are you doing today? it is cub season now, thankfully I think black bears stay in dens most of the winter unless they are super hungry, haven't seen any tracks yet, but I see bears often in the summer, they always run away from me though so far.
