I bought a new 1992 Transport SE with the 3.8 engine. It had the pneumatic self leveling rear suspension that worked very well. The individual rear seats were easy to remove for carrying cargo. It had about 220,000 trouble free miles when I traded it in.

I drove a rented one In Ohio around 1994 maybe. I liked it a lot. The local cops followed us with a damn radar gun but fortunately our sales guy had brought a pocket sized radar detector and it picked up the cops.

I remember so many of my friend's parents had these dust buster vans back when we were in junior high and high school.. They still to this day look odd to me, but they seem to run forever. That 3800 is solid. I have seen so many cars just rot around that engine. Yet still run fine..

I worked with a guy who had an oldsmobile 98 with the 3800. The car was mostly rust and the engine had a little over 400,000 miles but it sounded fine.

I'm one of those examples. Had a 1990 Bonneville that I drove over 350K until the subframe dropped out on the driver side. That 3800 gave me minimal trouble.

I had the Pontiac version back in the day. What I remember the most, apart from the cheap materials, was the horrible handling. Fine in a straight line but winding roads was scary for all involved.

HI guys, hey Grimes, under the coil pack is the ignition module. The flat machined plate between the layers is coated with dielectric grease to maintain good ground. The grease drys out on older units so cleaning and regreasing may fix the problem if not the module may be cheesed out. Good luck yall.

Are you sure the ignition module is grounded through its metal housing? Normally, the thermal paste is only used between the ICM and whatever it screws to for improved hear transfer and has nothing to do with electrical conductivity, but this may be an exception?

I had a 1993 Silhouette, bought brand new. Loved it. If it had had a sliding door on BOTH sides and the Series II 3800 V6 instead of the regular 3800, it would have been PERFECT. I always referred to it as "the shuttlecraft" (Star Trek reference). Mine did have some grounding problems that did take the dealership an overnight to locate (right at the top of the engine).

I knew people who worked at GM Oshawa where they built these as Luminas. It had a huge list of production problems and quality issues, even the engineers at the time nicknamed it the Lemona. They sold a lot of them but they all ended up at wreckers soon. Amazed to see one still surviving.

The older I get the more of a fascination I have with 90s vans... One that I find totally insane and amazing is the Previa because of its engine location, and just overall quirkiness. But stuff like this 95 Silhouette or even late model station wagons... to be honest If I see those out in the wild in mint condition it is more impressive to me than seeing most sports cars. I owned a 1992 model Silhouette! It had air ride and full leather! It was equipped with lots of features but had the 3.4 v6 which was very reliable but didn't have the power of the 3.8.... i loved it anyway! Didn't have to worry about rust because the body was all plastic! ❤

They never had air suspension. An option was a self leveling rear suspension with an air pump and air shocks that the pump pumped up to correct ride height. But the actual springing was steel coils all around.

I love my 1993 Pontiac Trans Sport 3.8, they build a Version for Europe, with different taillights ( amber indicator) based on the Silluette. ...but badged as pontiac, . The 2 days i drove 800 miles to the south of Europe.....getting 22 mpg on german Autobahn!

The dustbuster vacuum was more an 80s thing. I spent years and years working at car washes, starting at age 11. I still have nightmares about cleaning the inside of the wind shield on these things. You cannot reach the base unless you're 6'5.

The dustbuster vans were actually more reliable than the Chrysler minivans. My cousin had bought a 1993 Grand Caravan brand new and only had it like a year. The transmission went out and at the time Chrysler didnt want to fix it under warranty. She got rid of it and bought a brand new 1995 Pontiac Transport with the 3800. She ended up keeping that van from 1995-2013. It gave her one issue and that was the fuel pump back in 2002. She had a GMC, Pontiac, Buick dealer do the repair and it has been running since. I think she put like 275,000 miles on it. She sold it to another cousin and he drives it now to this day. He does mobile detailing out of it.

To be fair, just about anything from any manufacturer was more reliable than the Chrysler minivans. If you were driving around in the late 90s and saw a plume of blue smoke up ahead there was a high probability it was a Chrysler minivan. Most of those engines were shot by the time they hit 120,000 miles. The sad part is the transmissions made those engines look reliable...

Individually removable rear seats were so much lighter for the average soccer mom to remove than a big bench. those things rode and handled pretty well (for the time). My parents had one for a while..loaded up Lumina LS with rear air, alloys, power everything and the 3800.

My cousin owns a Lancia Stratos HF replica made by a British Company, called “Lister-Bell”, that has a Supercharged Buick 3800 V6 from a ‘99/‘98 Riviera. Great engines. Highly tunable. Parts & service are always available. Moreso than an original Ferrari Dino V6.

I remember the Olds one fondly, back in 99 I got taken to Florida as a suprise to stay with my Great Uncle and he had one and despite having something similarish back home the UK (Ford Galaxy, not to be mistaken for the US Galaxie) it felt like this big spaceship. I had 95 Silhouette in metallic grey, we called it the space shuttle. It had the biggest dash I've ever seen on any van to this day. I ended up selling it for 1k, and it had 250k on it.

Same here. I loved that car. Living in Germany they were quite exotic. Ours was red. And so smooth! My Mom got rid of it when it had those exact problems. It would die in idle. I was able to find the defective idle adjust motor. But it still died from time to time. The mechanics around here didn't want to work on the car, it not being a VW or mercedes. So,she sold it. I'd love to have one of these today.

This van was a bright spot during a dark time in my life. In 2001, I was placed in foster care due to molestation, neglect, and abuse. My foster mother owned one of these vans. Many a road trip was taken in her Dustbuster Silhouette, a nice hunter green exterior with the same beige interior. She had also had a Trans Sport, which she gave to one of her former foster children. I remember the automatic sliding door humming as it slid closed. I shut my fingers in it once because I thought I could reach in real quick to grab something before it closed all the way. I don't know if hers had the 3800, but it was a pretty nice van. I'd like to find one at some point.

Used to have on of these - MY'93, export European version, loaded except sunroof (rare option on these). Fun fact: when Americans done a face lift on these (with Bonneville front) for MY'93, the Europe got the Silhouette sold as Pontiac Trans Sport (except the decals on the body and fog lights) - it was sold this way till its end as MY'96. I always have a soft spot on the "dustbusters" since they were new. One of the best van I've been ever driven - comfort (rear air suspension), handling (low center of gravity/aerodynamics), practicality, torqy engine with good MPG and I it reached 200 km/h on German Autobahn with no issues. I miss mines - replaced it with a '96 Chevy Astro conversion van.

When I was a mechanic in the late nineties, the dustbusters had one of the most difficult to replace batteries. The worst variant had the washer fluid reservoir on the cross brace that covers the battery.

When I was little in the early 90s, my dad took us on a trip down to D.C. from Boston. On Route 95 he was pointing out all of these then-new vans by the unique taillights on them. It turned into a game of counting the taillights. Other car related highlights of that trip included the roof of our Bronco being too high for a parking garage, and us witnessing a flipped over then-new Lincoln Town Car with the airbags deployed, and a police officer on the scene pointing out this newfangled safety feature to us.

Yeah, most cars from that era are pretty simple to work on with the exception of the electronically controlled carbureted stuff with emissions crap everywhere. I don't understand charging $200 an hour just because something is a classic either, especially since they tend to be easier to work on than modern cars in many ways. I guess they have to cover their time in case service information or a part is really hard to find. It could also just be because they would rather attract owners of well preserved classics who are willing and able to invest in their cars than broke crackheads expecting them to half ass rig their old pile of junk for almost free.

They sure did try to fix that with the non-supercharged Series II though. Those went through intake manifold after intake manifold, dumping coolant into the oil if you didn't catch it quick enough. Lets run a piping hot EGR tube THROUGH a plastic intake, what could possibly go wrong!?

Later I checked the oil and engine had green fresh coolant mixed with oil, the sales fellow claimed normal when engine was washed. I said thank you and left the car lot.

I had a 1993 lumina APV and I absolutely loved it. It was dark blue with a red pinstripe and the mags. It has 2 heater and 2 ac, which was ice cold. It was so silent to ride in it was amazing. Funny looking but very functional.

I learned to drive a 93 3800. My first time out without parents (little sis with me) I ran to the store. I tried parking in a space on my left, onevof those angled spaces. That van had sooo much front end that I didn't judge my distance between me and the car that would have been on my right. I bumped the side of it, I was panicking, especially when I realized the lady was putting her groceries in her trunk, a Taurus I believe. She was really nice and told me that I just rubbed the dirt off. I miss that van, although for some reason it ate alternators, replaced every few months but that was before learning about cars.

My father had a non supercharged '92 Bonneville with a 3.8. They figured out the suspension for that car and tuned the exhaust just right. Pontiac had a way of making gourmet dishes from GM powdered beef stroganoff. The platform made an interesting midsize monospace for Olds.

We owned a 1992 Pontiac TransSport. We liked that you could easily remove the 5 back seats. We moved our daughter up to university with two trips. We had bought used IKEA furniture. The 3800 engine was very good. We sold it with close to 300,000 km. Of course we did the regular maintenance etc. including transmission fluid changes, coolant changes, and engine oil and filter changes. We had the alternator rebuilt at a Delco service centre. The heater core was changed once. That was what some people classed as fun. I took it down to where the actual heater core needed monkey hands. The Pontiac dealer did it for something like 2.5 hours. The 16 year old van was replaced with a new Honda Odyssey van in 2008. My wife likes a van for hauling people. The seats are NOT very easy to remove and they are much heavier. The timing belt needs to be replaced every 6 years on the Honda. Your video with the GM van brought back some memories.

My parents bought one brand new as a show-dog taxi. They showed German Shepherds all over the Midwest and Eastern States. It wasn't unusual for them to put 1,500 to 2,000 a week on it. They maintained it by the book and it was very reliable. It never failed to start or leave anyone stranded. When it had 285,000 miles they sold it to their housekeeper's brother for $450.00 and he drove it from Wisconsin to Alaska. He drove it as a work-hunting fishing van for a couple of years before he punctured the oil pan while driving down a rutted dirt track. He had it towed back to his house and he propped open the front passenger door and turned it into a doghouse and that's where it's been for the last couple of years.

Those were everywhere in the 1990s - surprising that so few are around today when they had such a good engine, but then, people back then didn't try to hold onto their cars. The only big downside of them (and this could be said for a _lot_ of 90's cars) is that they're not very safe in a head on collision. The front passenger space just kinda folds in on itself catastrophically. IIHS has some old footage of tests on them - it's not pretty. But again, a lot of 90's and older cars were that way, unfortunately.

Those IIHS tests are for the later GM minivans that had a (weak) unibody. These had a space frame with plastic panels like the Saturns of the era, which is much stronger.

That's a super clean example! Spent lots of time in the transport version as a kid. Whenever we traveled far, my father would bring one home from his dealership. Loved them then, still love them now!

So many people who owned these vans had front end crashes due to the design of the front end. It is very difficult to judge distances.

My main memory regarding these, was in elementary school, and there was some advisory sent out to parents in the surrounding schools and area, that some perv was lurking around in a Transport. I always knew car models, even then so I knew what to look out for. So aside from once being common traffic, that's all I remember them for now. Creepmobile 😄

My favorite memory with this van was when I was younger we actually had a little dustbuster in the van to clean it and I put it under the wheel so that when my mom pulled off she ran the little vacuum over 😂 she was not happy

Yes, more to say . . . I have owned two Silhouettes: 2000 GL and a 2004 GLS. After that I had to get a 2005 Buick Terraza and, last September, a 2007 Terraza, both were CXLs. The 2005 had a habit of suddenly applying the brakes and then accelerating while driving normally. The 2007 does not have that problem. The 2007 is scheduled for an Amtrak Phase III paint application as it represents the last SDP40F locomotive. Buick received what would have been the new Silhouette after GM killed Oldsmobile.

Just sold my 04 GM with a 3800 in it. Just a rock solid engine. The guy who bought it got a great deal as I'd recently had all the coil packs, leads and plugs replaced and the radiator had all the hoses & heater tap replaced. Drove as smooth as. When I bought the new car and I had the old GM detailed, it came up so good I regretted replacing it. It probably go another 100,000 Km's.

My mom had a 93 Trans Sport, she loved it. Other than having to rebuild the trans every 150k, it was quite reliable. As I remember the rear seats all come out individually and can be reconfigured as you want for more cargo space. Traded it in for a 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee after 300k+ miles and 2 transmissions.

I had a 1990 Olds Silhouette in the popular snow white with black stripes color scheme. It was a great minivan, underpowered but very reliable, with amazing space inside - you could put 20+ 4' x 8' sheets of plywood in it! The downside was that it drove like a large truck and the engine was so far back under the windshield that you could couldn't get to any regular maintenance items. We never called it 'a dusk-buster van' though. It was rather known as the 'monorail' car because the front looked just like a Disney or similar monorail. Oh, and cleaning that huge sloped windshield, especially at the bottom, took better part of an hour. As I had it in Central Florida, it really baked the inside of the van in the summer.

I still daily drive an old dustbuster era minivan, except mine is a 93 Previa. 240k miles and still driving without issues and I've personally put 60k on it

This was a joy to watch. I grew up with a 94 Transport and the face lift final year model as well. I loved being in and driving these vans. So many practical things about them and they were comfy. To this day I still think the windshield wiper controls are the best I’ve used.

My parents had the Lumina APV(bought it brand new) while I was in high school. Took us on many vacations to NH, NY, Washington DC, and Gettysburg. I learned how to drive in that van.

We owned 1 of these Oldsmobile Silhouette vans. It was a 96 we bought in 01 for $900 cash at a used car lot. Only thing wrong with it was back hatch didn't open from the outside. Dealer said is was so cheap because no one likes the dustbuster look. We loved it. Wound up giving it to a neighbor that needed a Vehicle when we got another . He in turn gave it to a friend that needed a vehicle when he got another. Last year it was still being used as a pizza delivery vehicle.
