I followed along today drawing.. and realized something quite interesting… if your original circle has a radius of 7cm this technique does make a perfect heptagon. I imagine if the radius is deniable by 7 the final circle does meet up with the original… I did it three times and this worked for me, try it and and let me know if this is true!

I enjoy viewing these videos from time to time. I find them inspiring and incredibly relaxing. I’ll have improved my skills since the last time I watched, and will redraw this with a little more understanding of the geometry and (hopefully) improved accuracy and neatness. I now understand the warning about using metal rulers with pens, and have now have a few pens that are damaged from getting caught between the ruler and the paper. I need to find a good metal ruler with a slightly raised edge! Thank you again for sharing your expertise and inspiration - you are a great teacher.

The ancients may have seen it as disharmonic, being misaligned with the rhythmic order to a small degree. This could have been interpreted as evil since it representing a chaotic force which will not replicate perfectly.

Murmurings of birds, or those clouds of birds you see flying together, operate in sets of 8. So each bird is influenced by the 7 birds closest to it, that are around it in a sort of 7 pointed star, and then they all end up in synchrony flying together in one collective swarm. Just one example of this pattern in nature.

I have drawn many Heptagrams. they are quite easy. start with a ream of paper & describe 10 or 20 complete arcs centered on the pages. begin with the natural 6 divisions of the first page. then 8 divisions on the second. split the difference with each page until you reach the 7. another method is to divide the circle by 14 & skip every other point.

Zak you are unleashing the human mind to explore beyond the boundaries of the known to the world of the unknown. Sacred geometry has always fascinated me. Perhaps I need to delve into this art that combines numbers and art that opens a doorway into understanding the root of the "Seed, Petal and the Flower of life to embrace the "Tree of Knowledge" I don't quite know why I am bothered why we cannot draw this free hand, but its almost like it was never meant to be, which I find disturbing. The revelation of the difference of free hand drawing and sacred geometry points to the parallels of "Order and Chaos" Some years ago, I wrote a poem and it went against mainstream academia to say that "Plato and the platonic solids were incomplete and there are 12 symbols and not just 5. I cannot explain how or why I know, but I just do. Good and evil have always been opposing forces and one could argue that it is the free will that allows us to chart our destiny throughout life.

There is another way of getting that 51.42 into infinity number for any size circle, my technical drawing teacher in the late 70's showed us a trick which was a bit more accurate way of doing it , I can't remember how to do it and I've searched everywhere to find the info but no luck. Since it is considered impossible to divide a circle into seven equal parts, this number 7 was considered sacred to the Virgin Goddess Artemis in ancient Greek philosophy and religion. 7 represents virginity. Her temples were built with 7 approximately equal sides..... or so I have heard. Good and Evil is a dualistic concept and so is not absolutely true. At best, it (good and evil) can be only relatively or conventionally 'true;' which is not 'True' at all. The number 7 appears in nature in waveforms: Seven colors of light waves and seven harmonics and therefore seven notes of sound in a scale, and also, seven days of the week. 7 days of the week, 4 weeks in a month, 13 months in a year=364. 364+1 day out of time= 365 days in a year.
@lindyashford77442 жыл бұрын
Not impossible to draw, just to draw with immaculate construction. Which, as you prove, does not really matter, as we can make those tiny adjustments by eye anyway. I doubt the ancients really though seven was evil, too busy wondering about all the irregular orbits and other anomalies. BTW, I get the feeling you must have a passing acquaintance at least with Keith Critchlow? There is a perfectly good way to divide a straight line by seven, or any number you choose…. Including the awkward ones like 13 , 17 and 19…. A flat stick for smaller measurements or a long length of rope for larger, no feet needed. Dividers almost certainly derive from that process, and the compass is a useful extrapolation. Thanks b6 the way for making me curious, I liked the way your compass locks in place, mine does not do that being of a different generation, it seems very useful so I ordered one, I just hope I won’t break it and am looking forward to putting it to use. The only downfall of the compass is the holes it makes, do you have any solutions? Finding a finer point seems impossible.

Your problem with accuracy comes from using a pencil. As you draw the pencil gets shorter. Not by a lot but enough to throw things off a tiny bit. Switch to a pen and you just might be able to draw the shapes more accurately!

I’m so confused. I always wondered if it’s even possible to get a perfect heptagram. Since 360 isn’t evenly divisible by 7.
@pluto6143 Жыл бұрын
There's some really interesting maths behind it! It has nothing to do with the number 360, because that's just an arbitrary number we picked to split a full revolution into degrees. There's a full mathematic theory as to which numbers can be constructed: 7 and 9 are just examples of impossible ones, and some seemingly obscure numbers like 17 and 257 are actually possible.
@johncahill36442 жыл бұрын
I’m trying to understand the point...it seems as though there is some prevailing wisdom that claims you can’t divide a circle into 51.4286 degrees with a straight edge and compass. Obviously you can one way or the other (if nothing else by iteration, getting closer and closer), the bigger question is where this fallacious prevailing wisdom comes from. And of course what does geometry have to do with the sacred in the first place (that also seems to be based on questionable, if prevailing, wisdom).
@pluto6143 Жыл бұрын
The "prevailing wisdom" comes from mathematics! It's possible to make a heptagon with tools in addition to the straight edge and compass (like a markable ruler, which can relay distances), but if you only have those two, then it'll never be "mathematically perfect", and iteration would only become exact if it was done for an infinite amount of time (obviously, drawings in the real world don't have to be perfectly correct, so this only is notable from a mathematical standpoint). The reason you can't do 7 is because it doesn't satisfy a particular property (see my other comment).
@minamur2 жыл бұрын
you know, there are things you can do with oragami that you can't with compass and straightedge. i wonder if you could use paper folding, compass and straightedge to exactly make a heptagram. ever thought of adding origamics to your toolset?
