On my way back from finding 101 on January 2nd, I noticed while passing by that DREI job 200, the Tuscola/Ficklin local switcher had picked up a cut of box cars in Tuscola from UP and was spotting them on one of the storage tracks in the little yard just west of there. Box cars, or any cars other than hoppers and tank cars, look somewhat out of place on DREI, since the vast majority of their customers are agricultural (ADM, Priment, and Cargil, being the big three with a dozen or so smaller customers).
Figuring I'd get a quick shot of them rolling light back towards the industries in Ficklin with the box cars in the background, I set up at the crossing between the yard and industries. To my surprise, my friend was at the controls, and I soon learned that they would be making a run to Pierson (Pierson Station on Google Maps) to pick up a single tank car from the local fertilizer dealer there. This is a rarely served customer and I've ironically seen it being served twice, and with the same engineer. This little run I think epitomizes the shortline railroad of rural America--providing rail service to tiny customers that class 1 railroads would ignore.
Of note to anyone in the horn department, 3896, while still equipped with a K3LA now has one of the Narrow-Font 2 generation compared to the Raised Letter it had before, courtesy of HLCX 4212. To the horn enthusiast, it sounds slightly better than before I think, though most others wouldn't bother to notice a difference. It also has a the bronze bell it came out of the factory with which is cool. The synchronized ditchlights however still very much bother me.
