@@cla_hvb Honestly for his situation I think it's pretty much just a kid being a kid situation above everything else. The companies that put out these kind of MTX want people to spend like that kid so they tend to stick the parental controls into several layers of submenus so unless a parent is knowledge of the game's menus or told how to they will have trouble finding the menu. Sometimes kids also just do things that they know and are told and taught are wrong, regardless of parenting. At the end of the day the parent should have been more careful with the kid's access to the card if they didn't steal it. Though if the kid DID steal the card to do it I really wouldn't blame the parent as much. I would very much doubt the kid was taught that stealing was fine and knew that doing it was wrong but again, kid.

Not sure I agree 100% here. It's the parent's fault sure, but at least a third of the blame falls on the kid. If the kid steals the card to do that, I'm blaming the kid more than the mom. Sure the mom needs to teach her kid not to steal, and the value of money, but when other kids encourage them to either steal or "find a way to get skins" the kid is just gonna fall to peer pressure. And there isn't anyone under 16 who's immune to peer pressure. I've done college research papers on kids and microtransactions, and there's plenty of times kids get bullied for not having cool skins in video games. Same idea as having generic clothes or a cheap smartphone. Community is just as important as the individual parents. Now if the mom connected the card to the console and allowed the kid free reign, the only thing the kid did wrong is not understand the value of money. That's not easy for young kids, especially nowadays. The mom shouldn't allow full credit card privileges to the console, and there's ways to force authentication for it.

Idk man, kids can really be intentionally malicious when it comes to getting something they really want. If the kid stole the card, the parents should not be blamed, because at the end of the day it was the kids conscious decision to maliciously take the card and spend 300 on it. If the kid just used a card that was already in the system. Then yes the parent would be to blamed for ignorance.

A year and a half or 2 years ago? My nephew bought a game on my xbox off of my card. I didn't holler and scream, whoop him etc. I explained that he can't just do that amd he needs to ask first, shut off the xbox and told him to play outside for the day. Somehow, it's never happened again. Weird.

The thing about blaming video games is that it ignores the first step just like they do, who gave them the games to start with?, did you link a card to an account and not even think to remove it? I learned very quickly why not to steal as a 6 year old child, I took a dollar from my dads wallet to get a chocolate and he explained why I was getting punished for what I did, it was not rage filled screaming, a quiet conversation and a belting did it, I usually knew why I was being punished and I learned those lessons, manners cost nothing but makes a man after all.

To be fair back in the day we didn't have games with a premium currency. We only needed money to buy the game and then we were set. In that sense, we could potentially (emphasis on potentially) blame the gaming companies for advertising these type of games for children, but even then its still the parents' fault if they let their children play these games.

What I think happened here is the kid used money on the card before and it was no big deal so they did it again and again. I say that bc u hear her being like “no more using my card” meaning the kid has used it before. So therefore this is bad parenting bc the kid shouldn’t have access to her card for any amount of v bucks

Kids aren't all the same. I was a little sh*t when i was young. My mom would beat me, scold me, talk to me about morals and values and i didn't care. If anything, being scolded or beaten made me MORE rebellious, not less. These things only really took root in me much later in life. Kids aren't robots that you can just program to "be good". That's not how humans work.

To be fair, it is indeed at least partly the video-games' faults. They're specifically designed to abuse psychology, take advantage of people's mental illnesses, take advantage of children's naïvety, and so on. They're specifically designed to obfuscate the costs by using multiple levels of abstract transactions of currencies (eg $7.49 for 199 company-diamonds which get you 4,777 game-emeralds which you use in-game to buy stuff, which makes it harder to figure out the real-world cost of getting that in-game item). They're specifically designed to separate cost from everything in numerous ways to trick people. They're specifically designed with an opt-out policy to auto-charge you every week or month instead of providing a one-time purchase and requiring you to choose to buy a recurring subscription. Some will even full-on fraud and just charge you for stuff you never agreed to. Any parental-controls are usually buried away in menus, on the assumption that most parents are "boomers" and don't even know about them (especially since games no longer come with manuals). Yes, parents need to be more alert and wary of their children's actions, but game-studios are absolutely scummy, so let's not be letting them off the hook. Watch the Jimquisition for far too many examples. 😒

Just a couple things I would like to bring up: firstly, Microsoft family features allows parents to allocate specific amounts of money to a child’s account, so there’s that. Secondly, our society is becoming so sensitive that discipline is impossible. I am in charge of a group in a high school military program, and we can’t even yell at our cadets, and who da thunk it, we have conduct issues.
@Daboah
@Daboah 2 жыл бұрын
That is just sad. You guys need power and respect.
@stormcruiser2245
@stormcruiser2245 2 жыл бұрын
@@Daboah its not a power thing. what I was getting at is that discipline is not taught by letting people do whatever they want, there needs to be consequences. and the issue is on both sides. children don't have the self control to not make decisions like this, and parents refuse to teach their children discipline through consequences. don't yell at them pointlessly, but don't do what optimus said and just get your money back and let them continue to play video games freely and without question or consequence. when you are in a position like that, whether it is parental, military, job, or other situation where you have subordinates, you don't have power, you have responsibility. when somebody under your authority does something wrong, it is not on them, it's on you as the leader. the parallel I was drawing with my JROTC group is that society is constantly discouraging confrontation. we can't confront our cadets about conduct issues, so they just continue to do the actions that are against our code of conduct because nothing will happen, because we as the leaders aren't ALLOWED to do anything. So its technically our fault as well because can't do anything to discourage and ridicule wrong doings

When I was 8, 9, 10 years old, I knew not to use my mom's credit card to refill virtual currency. I understood money is important. I'll be on the benefit of the doubt and assume the mother trusted her son to not do this and maybe told him how important the credit card is. The kid either didn't fully understand or thought mom wouldn't know because the kid doesn't really know how the credit card works. They just know money "magically" comes from a plastic card. I blame the mom and the child.

Actually as kid this exact situation happened to me, but it was a little different, my friend had his moms card on my 360 right, well I was a dumb lil kid and I bought castle crashers, thinking I had got the demo. About an hour later I get called to my friends house not really knowing what’s up and he tells me everything and how his mom thinks it was him and I felt so bad, I went home, grabbed my only currency I had which was like 5 dollar coins. Not enough but I still wanted to give back what I could and he called his mom and I fessed up and told her. Cause again it’s my friend and I don’t want my homie going down for what I did, especially with strict parents like he had. Long story short I lost my dollar coins and nobody got into real trouble, which in hindsight I think is because I tried to pay it back even though I was like 6

Story time: When I was I want to say 10-11, my dad was a member of a country club and when he ordered me a drink I knew he didn’t have money on him but we got the drink because he said “just put it in my bill I can pay for it later”. My friend also was with us at the time and his dad was also a member but he was 8-9 at the time and thought that what my dad did was an easy life hack to get free stuff there. About a month later, I went over to my friends house to see if he wanted to hang out and his dad answered and told me “sorry but he’s grounded until he can raise or work about $500”. And this was like 2006 so that now is about $750 dollars worth of drinks, shop items and who knows what else he bought with that money. I never did anything like that before but after hearing that story I would honestly get paranoid whenever I would use my mom and dad’s card whenever they would be down to buy me something or I needed to use their card to buy them something they wanted.

I remember when I was maybe 9 years old and I ended up spending around 300 dollars on my phone with my dad’s credit card on various games. Instead of getting incredibly angry and threatening to beat me, he collected himself, showed me the charges, gave me a nice, long lecture and grounded me for a week like a normal parent. I never spent money without his permission again because I understood his message. There are different ways to teach your child to not spend your money, not just threatening them.

Definitely a case of saving card info to the console. Unless you remove it, every purchase made will be made on whatever card you have linked to it. There is a part of this that is the child's fault, but I reckon the child didn't even exactly realize what he was doing in that moment, however this is 99% of the parent's fault.

Lemme tell yall a story about how I almost used me mothers credit card. Alroght so I think this was back in 2014 or 2015, and I think I was about 8 or 10 I dont rembr). I was a Mario child back in the days, always playing Mario Wii, Mario kart 7, and etc. But I was also a fnaf kid; because this was an era where fnaf was a really popular franchise as a whole. I knew about the first fnaf game because of markiplier, and I heard that there was a sequel coming out, so I was tempted to buy the game When the sequel came out with the demo, I got excited and played the demo non stop not because it was fun, but because I couldn't have access to all 5 nights since it was a demo, so I played it like I did had 5 nights with custom nights and I knew it was demo because after I complete a night it'll always tell me to purchase the game for all 5 nights. And I was tempted to do so. It was prolly 6, 7, or 8 (idk) in the morning and I was ready to purchase the full game with me mother's credit card, without permission. While me muther and futher were sleeping, I sneaked up to the bag and gently pulled out me mother's card and I quickly ran to my tent. (My living room was large enough to put a tent where I can play me Mario kart and fnaf 2 demo) When I got into my tent I was about to purchase the full game, I put in the numbers and such, and was ready to play the full game. The button that said continue was right there, I lifted me finger and slowly approached the button. Until I felt something. As I was about to press continue, I felt something. I was hesitant to execute to plan (order 66). I felt shame and greedy. I was questioning myself if I was doing the right thing. I started at the screen, then my little Mario toy. My morality impacted my imagination because my little Mario toy was telling me to not do it , saying how I'm better than this, and scared me that if I do execute the plan (order 66), i would be in big trouble and that I'll never get to play Mario again for a long time. So I listened. I pressed the cancel button, pressed the home button, closed the app, and turned off my phone. I looked at my little Mario toy and said that he's right, I am better than this, and I shouldn't let me greed get the better of me. I think I was seeing things because I thought I saw Mario smiling at me with approval. So I got up and exit out the tent, went to me parents room and put me mother's card with dignity. I left and went back to my tent. I looked at my Mario toy with a smile and said thank you mario, you're my hero. And I played Mario Kart 7. Now that I'm in highschool, looking back I'm honestly glad that I was a Mario kid, because sharing this cringey story makes me feel more appreciative to Mario because without him, I would've been a bad kid. And as for fnaf 2, let's just say I bought a 10$ gift card because I helped me father with the yard. And seeing children being so aggressive and sociopathic nowadays just makes me feel sad because I could tell that the parents are slacking; and just blaming on video games isn't going to help much because I think it's not really video games fault that their child is being aggressive, rather than how influenced these children are because I believe video games are art, and art can influence everyone. Which is why I'm a Mario guy. If I was a parent and if I want give my child his first video game, I would definitely and honorably give him either Mario 64 or Mario odyssey because I want my child to experience something beautiful and hopefully maybe my child can learn a thing or two from Mario for being a pure, loyal, brave and selfless person. Also if u wanna shame me for almost doing something bad like this, so be it, I understand. I'm truly sorry for this long cringey story, if anyone is bothered to read all this.
