In case anyone is wondering, despite currently being the 5th highest ranked American player by FIDE Classical rating, Hans Niemann was not ranked so highly earlier in the summer when the selection process was done to determine the USA team roster. He wasn't "snubbed" from the team. Surely if he continues to play at the level he has been for the next 2 years he'll be a shoe-in to make the 2026 USA roster.

They are past their prime and not as ambitious as they were when they were younger. I think Hans's level is maybe 2710-2720 but not close to 2740 like he is now, I would be surprised if he were to keep this rating by playing in strong round-robin tournaments next year when he will be most likely invited to some.

Svane, Bluebaum, Donchenko, Kollars and their ace, Keymer, who has been playing terrific chess this year Iran - a very strong top two boards with Maghsoodloo and Tabatabaei and a nice mix of youth and experience in their boards 3-5 Netherlands - Anish hasn't been at his best this year but he's still a Super GM and the rest of their lineup, L'Ami, Bok, van Foreest and Warmerdam is quite solid

For Cristian, Guo isn't pronounced Goo-oh. To get there, first, say ho (as in ho-ho-ho from Santa Clause). Replace the h with w, so you say "wo" (rhymes with ho). Then put a G in front of it, like you would say Gwen, but it's Gwo. That would be closer. Unfortunately, some strange rules for Chinese written in English. Xi would be She where X is pronounced as "sh". Qin would be Chin where Q is pronounced as Ch. I think Fabi knew Cristian was a bit off by sarcastically saying "good pronunciation" when he knew it wasn't. :)

More technically but untechnified, Standard Mandarin now has no out-and-back syllables like English "wow" or "yay" where the lips leave a certain shape and then return to the same shape.* So for _guo_, etc., your lips open after the "w" but don't come back -- think "g-woah" but the audio cuts out a split second early. *OK except maybe 'cliff', which you can pronounce "yaiy" to sound like you're from the 19th century or Taiwan. Given Hans's recent form a 5-10% chance of him winning seems very low. Has anybody calculated an "SCC-relevant Elo" for Hans in, say, the last two or three months? He beat Maxime and Wesley. He's beaten Anish in a match, and according to him his recent classical Elo games have been at around 2800. Also, Magnus is potentially under pressure. If he underestimates Hans and/or a couple of early games go against him, then tilting, or a general sub-par performance is possible. Magnus is still favourite, obviously, but any other player with Hans's recent form might have, say, a 20% chance.

Alireza hasn’t done very well previously in SCC format. He has underperformed each time for the past 3-4 years (including junior SCC). Hikaru has been the most consistent performer in SCC (only ever losing to Magnus and always reaching the finals). So giving like 50-50% chances is somewhat wild. I would say 65%-35% in favor of Hikaru. Magnus 70%- Hans 30%

Invitations to the top tournaments are sent out many months in advance. Erigaisi was not as highly rated in December 2023 as he is now. I would guess he will get plenty of good invitations for 2025
