Oh my Gosh.... the cycle prep brings back so many memories. In '74 (I was 22) I quit my job, loaded up and prepaid my rent for 3 months and headed out on my CB750 not knowing exactly where I was going. First stop was Yosemite and from there I would just go where ever it felt good! So...3 months later I basically hit 3 corners of the US (minus the Deep South) and racked up @30k miles. There was a lot of 'zig-zag'! The best advice I can give to someone is to never have detailed plans..... only general outline and just go for it! Don't be afraid of a detour! Always be ready for 'that 2nd largest ball of twine... west of the Mississippi' to quote Clark Griswold!

Sarah, don't ever feel silly about hearing protection, even if it's overkill. You want to be enjoying those mix tapes even when you're an old lady. (T-shirt reference) I'm a bit older than your dad, and my hearing, while not quite as good as when I was your age, is still good. This is because I avoided dangerous noise levels. Later in life, you'll be happy you wore those things.

One thing you can say about the Johnson’s. They don’t care about personal protective equipment. Unfortunately Sarah and Colin are learning from them. You should not operate a nail gun or any equipment without eye protection. Look how Colin had to look away and cover his eyes. I hope you are safer on your trip then you are building.

I was always taught that whenever using a circular saw you should never have the blade more that an eighth of a inch deeper that the wood your cutting to avoid a bad cut and to avoid the even worse kickback. So whenever I see using a circular saw with the blade so wide open it scares me, because I was told a story of a very talented carpenter in training at a college my uncle used to teach at who got overconfident with a saw at a worksite get a massive kickback and it caused the blade to jump and he ended up going to hospital with the blade stuck in his leg. So please guys be careful with your tools and make sure your blades are sharp and correctly set to the correct depth of cut. Because I really don’t even want to hope that anything bad could happen to any of you. Because your lives are worth more than anything you build.
