What i love about tyler the most is that he's not just great at music, hell the visuals alone for the chromakopia album so far are beautiful, and im honestly a fan of his clothes as hes very hands on with designs. As his name implies he's not just a musician, he is truly a creator.

Tyler is my favorite artist by far, but I hate how people just hate him for the sake of hating him or glaze him into oblivion. I like how you just stated the facts, and I loved your breakdown of Chromakopia. Thanks for actually looking into the album instead of just mindlessly glazing or hating like most people are. I'd put Chromakopia in the same place as you, between wow and whoa, there was nothing I disliked about it, but it just feels like it's missing something, which was there in CMIYGL. My personal favorite songs in the album was either Take Your Mask Off or Like Him.

The way Tyler breaks down HOW people listen to albums.... is so very accurate. It makes NO sense to drop an album on a Friday, at midnight. And all these artists do this (as per label conditions I'm sure). Tyler prefers Monday or early in the week, which is very unconventional & different these days. Sounds like he hangs out with REGULAR people & can easily relate. Many other artists esp more famous ones, probably don't even consider these things. Tyler is definitely one of the MOST genuine artists today. For sure. He deserves more credit, yes. But at the same time, he's one of those artists that everyone knows & loves, regardless what's going on with the "charts".

Yup, I think Tyler is completely under appreciated, he’s got crazy talent, and I love the fact that he’s always been exactly who he is and who he wants to be and is still succeeding. We don’t highlight that kind of thing enough, don’t champion people who think different than the norm and still create incredibly good art. Especially when it comes to popular music and especially especially when it comes to hip hop. He’s gotten so good at what he does I always look forward to his next drop of music because I know it’s going to be great.

This is nothing but truth. Hip hop and artistry are inseparable we just forgot for a min while commercialism took over. Old heads remember p Diddy dominating now look at where that ended up. Comparing artists like Tyler, The Creator and J. Cole oversimplifies the diverse landscapes they each navigate. While charts can hint at audience preferences, they don’t reflect the vastly different audiences and artistic goals these artists have. Tyler’s introspective, genre-bending evolution targets a distinct crowd that values boundary-pushing creativity, while J. Cole’s grounded, storytelling approach resonates deeply with his core fans. Art is personal, and every artist holds a unique place for their audience.

Really good analysis. Asks some really important questions, except for one: why is someone who started as an outsider so concerned with not being one anymore? I think you’re right that Tyler’s easily one of the biggest artists in hip-hop now, but it feels like it’s at the expense of some really challenging art that the mainstream could use. It serves us well for him to still know how to upset some people.

I wanna push back slightly on your early segment- I don't think Tyler's early work is any less emotional than his current stuff, or what was being put out at the time. It's brash, it's controversial, it's edgy for sure, but not unemotional. He tackled topics like feeling like an outsider, being rejected by the music industry, the consequences of his short rise to fame and being too young to be taken seriously, his (non)relationship with his dad, being misunderstood in a myriad of ways. I also think that the edge is emotion in itself- it's not like it comes from nowhere. People do that because they're angry with the world, and I think people being edgy for the sake of it in art gets a bad rap. When you're angry at the world for all the ways it's fucked sometimes you wanna just say some fucked up shit. And in that there's a political statement all of its own. I know Tyler has since said he doesn't like his edgy early stuff but I love his earlier edginess because sometimes I wanna just yell at the world and it's nice to know there's other people sick of it out there. I'm a big fan of punk rock, and I feel like the movement has been dulled to something more palatable recently. Tyler removing scum fuck from the title of flower boy speaks to that, changing the overarching presentation of his music to be more commercialized. I like his new pop music, it doesn't need to be so super edgy all the time and I like the sound, but there is something I miss about him going against the grain in that type of way. In a lot of ways he actually still has that edge in him, he just doesn't say the slurs anymore, so the mainstream takes it different. Don't get me wrong, he's still unique as an artist. But I miss that part of him that matured out. And I don't think it took away from the raw emotions he presented in his music, just like early punk rock being emotional and political and hurt and angry.

Arguably it was always the big three then Tyler. The mainstream part of the culture just had to soften to accept him over time while anyone who's been here since OFWGKTA knew what it was back then. That changed overtime with each solo project. That said, second mention: This man Tylers become an even bigger Bi-sexual icon than he already was.

Okay, a wild take from me and a wild comparison as well, but I feel Tyler is like Bachira from Blue lock anime. Hear me out. Blue lock, the football institute and training facility has this strict regime and a ranking system. And the Protagonist, Isagi tries to climb it and be the No. 1 striker, like your basic protags do. But Bachira as a character is so unique to this world and among characters, that, he doesn't even follow or care about the rules and ranks of the training system. His character isn't at all shown as some kind of a big 3 or a character that the protagonist should take as main rivals in the narrative, but still shown as someone who is realllly good at football. And all he does is just play like he usually does. He doesn't care about the standards, the play of football and just goes with the flow. He is that weirdo guy who is also someone who proves himself without even trying to prove and stands among the top, yk? And I feel Tyler's place in this whole rap game, he is like Bachira, weirdo (in a good way) and doesn't stick to the standards and expectations in the hip-hop space, and just does what he likes and that always brings him at the top and people look up at him as among the best in the industry. LIke, if someone says the top 3 in hip hop, no one is gonna mention Tyler, but when someone does mention Tyler, everyone would be like "oh shit, yeah he does stand shoulder to shoulder among the big 3". The main reasons why people don't bring him in the conversation is because, as Tyler said, he isnt just a rapper, he is Tyler and does stuff which he is passionate about and rap is one of them. He isn't someone you can rank. He just thinks out of the box and does things outside of standards.

Great comparison and character breakdown. There are big personalities that represent HipHop/rap that don't recognize Tyler as one of the big guys because he doesn't fit the stereotypes we all know. He's one of those children that get slightly pushed aside, is noticed by everyone except those I've named, but come out as a unique child that HipHop/rap really needs.

Tyler is talented. No argument there. Ultra talented. It’s kinda wild seeing some peoples opinions on this though. I never would have guessed I would read that some people consider him to be a hip hop artist to be considered as a top 3 contender. I love his old albums the most, felt more real to me. Might have just been where I was at the time (currently 37), but like, his lyrics aren’t even close imo to being on the same intellectual level as the others in the category. It’s not even remotely close when you really listen to the tracks. Maybe I’m drunk or just in my own world…but it just isn’t even comparable. I feel like you’re trying to put him in a category that he just doesn’t belong in. He’s too different. He’s in his own lane and is doing phenomenal at it. Lmk if I’m high or something. Just my thoughts.

If you’re gonna compare their artistry at least be honest.

I think this critique is so good :D!! Great job on the video! As a small critique on a critique (haha) I think some of the cultural nuances are lost within your explanations of different songs and sounds on the album. On the track “I killed you” it’s a celebration of blackness/African American culture within a larger culture of oppression that leads to black people suppressing and downplaying the traits that make them beautiful and unique. I do agree with your take that it is about his personal struggle with navigating and understanding his identity but I think there’s just more depth than what you eluded to in the video :D On that note, I also think the inspiration for Sticky is important in the consideration of the song. This song is inspired by HBCU drumlines and their catchy repetitive nature. I think saying the flow is dumb-down is a bit disingenuous with the lack of nuance to what he’s playing homage to. But overall great job and I love your analysis :)!!!

I think that Tyler has obtained the "Top 3 Artist" Status for sure, but if anybody has to go from that Big 3, it has to be Drake. Based on your opinion, J. Cole hasn't dropped anything as sonically different as 2014 FHD and he has been quite inconsistent (although for me, The Off-Season was really good), but if we take that argument for Drake, then personally since If You're Reading This It's Too Late, Drake has not dropped anything of that level, and he has been far more active than Cole. We can maybe talk about a Big 4, and Tyler isn't 3rd or 4th, but if we were talking about who isn't Top 3 anymore, than I think Drake is the one to go out. Edit : Maybe I'm a hater, but Drake is Top 3 only because of albums sales and streams imo. Don't get me wrong, he's super skilled and one of the best rappers of the 2010s, but but his singing in his later albums is a bit annoying and tends to ruin some of his stuff, like Scorpion. I like this project, with songs like God's Plan, Emotionless, Survivor, Nonstop and Nice for What, but the rest comes out a bit underwhelming because of the singing parts.

im a total nerd when it comes to how musicians market themselves, and what their output is influenced by. i think the main reason tyler, the creator is so great is that the music he makes is not made “for” the listeners. obviously fan interaction and consumption is his paycheck, but his fandom loves him because he has so much passion for his work, passion he wouldnt have if he was just making what the people wanted to hear. like, is there another album that came out that sounds ANYTHING like Chromakopia? tyler is a risk taker, and thats part of why hes so special.

i think we are being way to harsh towards JCole. He left a bad impression by not batteling Kendrick, but thats not a reason to deny his impact by showing some debut-numbers. He and Kendrick are the rappers with the best fundamentals and are musical geniuses who definded the game. I think some points in this video are very debatable. I think its obvious on Kendricks side, but Coles projects like 4 your eyez and KOD contain greatly crafted sound, very touching topics and elite storytelling. As much as i love Tyler, but exposing and breaking the cycle of generational trauma in the black community will always be more boundary pushing than heartbreak imo. Your logic here doesnt make sense, since heartbreak is way more appealing for a larger audience than the suffering of a minority group (thats why Coles numbers are worse). Cole is heavily underrated by the public, but for me he stays in the top 2, followed by Tyler in third and Kendrick as the undesputable goat. All respect and love though 🙏🏽
