I always considered the arm swing more of a method to load weight into the foot that is about to push off-a forward to backward arm swing doesn't do that, and actually leeches power from the stride. To your last point, the side to side arm swing also helps load tension in the core, allowing that rotation to be more explosive. Good stuff!

Thank you, I appreciate your independent thinking about skating mechanics. I wanted to ask you about the 5-10% of the time in the forward stride that you quote. That is less than I observe anecdotally. And if you include quick starts and linear crossovers as part of forward stride mechanics, the number goes up further. (I've observed that skills in these directly correlate with skill in the forward stride). In fact, I'd argue that acceleration is the most important end product of a strong forward stride. Additionally, I find that most young skaters are lacking in basic stride mechanics (the 3 you mention as well as shin angle), and the single thing that separates the kids as they get toward high school age is that those kids that are faster in a straight line are generally the more effective players in other parts of their game. The danglers and kids who have good moves in tight spaces tend to start to get left behind somewhat if they aren't able to generate above average speed. So even if it's a small part of the game to actually skate fast in a straight line, it's a sorting function. The fastest straight line skaters have a disproportionate effect on the game. The fastest straight line skaters can get into beneficial locations sooner, have more ability to control the pace of the game, and they also can carry more speed when they end up going into other mechanics like the corkscrew, etc. So I think it's worth deeper consideration about the forward stride. Thank you again for your analysis. I've learned a bunch of useful things from you and I appreciate it. I look forward to your thoughts on this.

You can't really lump the linear crossover into the forward stride stats because they are totally different mechanics. Different edges, different leg movement, different muscles used. It does seem like, anecdotally at least, the vanilla forward stride might be used more than the percentage suggests, but remember also that we are more likely to remember something like a sudden breakaway where a forward stride is used to accelerate, than the other "more mundane" parts of game, especially moments off the puck. You are right that acceleration is a sorting function and fast players can have a special effect on the game, but I think the main point he was trying to make is not to over-concentrate on one aspect of skating if it ends up limiting your time to train the other mechanics.

@@jsquared1013 That's a fair point. They are different mechanics. My assertion is based on my observation that the fastest forward skaters are also the ones with the best linear crossovers. Not sure which one is the cause or effect there. The other reason I posted my above comment is that this channel seems to focus on mechanics that are mostly used when you are possessing the puck (shuffles, corkscrews, heel plants, soft drags, etc.). However, most of the game is played without possessing the puck (forechecking, backchecking, sprinting to open ice, races to loose pucks, etc.). The forward stride is used a lot in those movements, along with some non-linear crossovers. While I love Train2.0's content and original analysis, my assessment is that he focuses overwhelmingly on deception and maneuverability while possessing the puck while not addressing a lot about raw speed or movement without the puck. Still love what he does but my observation is that first-step acceleration and raw speed seems to be the first driver of a youth hockey player's ability, and I believe transfers well to the higher levels. The other items are important to being a complete player but they are all only effective if based on a foundation of acceleration and speed.

Whenever I get into an argument about arm swing. I usually just end up having to tell them "do speed skaters swing their arms forward"
