I think the most upsetting thing for fans I would like to add is that people loved Nanami alot more that Mei Mei and seeing how Nanami's dream of going to Malaysia was left unfulfilled while Mei Mei gets to live and go to Malaysia while Nanami didn't left fans feeling a sense of unfairness. Like how come the most selfish person gets to go to Malaysia while the other doesn't. Which unfortunately proves the selfish survive vs the selfless die. If we going to pull this card then I will to. As a grown man that just told his mom that he was was SAed as a young boy, I can tell you that it was necessary. The problem is people do not think it’s real, that it only swings one way, and that the way it looks is always the grotesque an vile way. Keep in mind we just say men women and children get turned into mincemeat like 2 episodes ago on mass, and a highschool girl get dommed. If this where draw the line now… might need to seriously rethink your moral stance a bit.
@spaghetti1383

People put sexual crimes in a different box than other crimes. In some sense, society deems SA as worse than murder. There is probably a reason for this that makes some sense. But Nick obviously has not thought about it at all. He just jumped at the chance to make a video on a "controversial" scene. As a result, it feels like he is missing a point. I'm not even defending the scene, I simply don't care, just like people who enjoy JJK aren't defending mass murder. Plus, on the scale of weird sex stuff in anime/manga, this feels much closer to Berserk than Mineta in MHA. The Mei Mei scene isn't acting as comedic relief or being justified in the story.

@@snark567 I meant realistically from a storytelling perspective. Gege has set up a society-wide problem with the world of JJK that won't magically go away by beating the stuffing out of Sukuna. Defeating Sukuna now also means the refutation of the ideology he represents and Gege seems to realize this - Yuki and Gojo both want to reform Jujutsu society. Ask yourself what kind of hollow victory would it be for Sukuna and Kenjaku to be killed only for the world to remain tainted by their ideals - more Yujis will watch more Hanamis die tragically to keep the same selfish dipshits comfortable on their gilded thrones looking over the mountains of corpses they're raised and the rivers of blood they've flooded. I don't expect anyone of the main cast to survive but I certainly hope Gege isn't going to pull a JK Rowling on the fanbase by building this obvious problem up and leave the satisfying ending as "and then things stayed just as shit as when we started".

So first off, mei mei is literally portrayed very explicitly to be a completely sack of garbage, everyone knows this, the main reason this scene exists, the main reason gege drew it in the FIRST PLACE, Is not to show that grooming is ok or something, is literally meant to characterize her as an intrinsically amoral person. Mappa did the right thing by animating this scene, its very important when you look at mei meis overall character to remember such a historic low and not giving it to the anime only's would have taken away from that aspect of the story.

She ran from battle while the others are fighting (just like another character does later in the manga). She *should* be punished... but she's going to get away with it, because in RL, *horrid people get away with things*. Hey bossman, I'm writing this as a massive fan and supporter of the message you're advocating for here - However, I feel an urgent need to challenge the place this criticism is coming from. Please don't hesitate to correct my misunderstanding if there is any. I'm struggling to feel what the intention of the message is here. Do we stop supporting JJK because of the nature of this scene because it's morally the right thing to do? If yes, do we stop supporting every other piece of contemporary pop-culture that has incest, r***, or grooming and suggestive themes? The way this discussion around the internet has been so reactionary feels... brain-rotty. Reacting for the sake of reacting, or notoriety, white-knighting. I don't like that. It refutes the whole point of the irony of these kind of scenes aim to serve. This raises the grounds for needing to take a moral stance on the arguments about what is "okay" or "too far" to be expressed artistically. I'm sure we all understand there are plenty of manga/popular culture shows that pull dark and very gross plot points out like this to portray a nasty part of humanity. But this feels like a really hard line to walk because it also reminds me of the whole "banned book" ideology, gatekeeping certain themes away from public education so as to "protect" children and others from... whatever we're protecting them from. The counterargument to that is to ABSOLUTELY expose students to heavier thematic concepts so that they have an opportunity to develop a relationship and understanding to them. And to your point of how JJK should have done this to better serve the narrative, you do circle back to how MeiMei was written to be a foil, or antithetical character to Nanami at the end of the video. & Like, that's exactly it brother - that's the plot point. I've always interpreted this scene as the way Gege can masterfully keep our hero's in a "morally" grey area, with a character like MeiMei who can so easily be interpreted as someone on the "right side" of humanity, to be exposed by this scene as how she is very much NOT that hero in actuality. It presents us as an audience with a REAL opportunity to check ourselves - that no matter how much good we say, or think we're doing - where do we ACTUALLY sit, morally? Anything that forces us to look in the mirror and think about what kind of person we actually are is an incredible opportunity to reflect and be better. Cheers, and thank you for using your platform in such a human way.

Well said. I think some people look at something dark and get upset to the point of wanting to boycott or demand an apology or etc. If you see something dark and infuriating and it infuriates you or disgusts you, yeah thats...kinda the point. Plenty of fiction will paint sugar and rainbows for people, but some won't be afraid to show darker themes. Berserk or akame ga kill or aot etc all have dark moments and themes. And that's OK. I'd only have an issue if it was a show marketed to kids like SpongeBob, and it shows very mature content. OK, now we got an issue. But jjk...pretty early shows it has plenty of violence and language, not really meant for adolescents. Idk, I think it's fine.

Guys Chibi Reviews made a great review on why this scene was so important to the theme of JJK. I’ll summarize: she escaped to where…. To Malaysia…. The place where the beloved and altruistic Nanami dreamed of b4 he died fighting to his last breath. But Mei Mei? She got to live and go to the very place Nanami wanted to go bcuz she’s twisted and immoral. It is VERY unsettling but that’s the point.

Not condoning of possible behavior on Mei Meis part nor any other sort of forgiveness for people who partake in like actions. I recently looked at the Mei Mei scene, and noticed Ui Ui is fully clothed and she is in a bathrobe with only the exposed arm uncovered. Is it possible for JJK fans to have taken a lot out of context regarding the scene itself, even considering the fact Mei Mei very much uses the love her brother has for her as a tool? Ui Ui being dressed and seeming to be teasing her about him having to take care of her even seemed a bit strange, but contextually speaking didn't they JUST escape the Shibuya Incident. I've just been wondering how far we are taking this based on maybe a misinterpretation of Geges writing.

Bro, idk why people are so pissed. It's disgusting and it's supposed to be. The immorality of the Jujutsu world is at the core of the story. Mei Mei is a perfect example of how corrupt those who blindly follow the selfish path that the Jujutsu world has shown is the best route to success. Time and time again, the selfish are rewarded and the selfless die prematurely. It's clear that's the intention when you realise she's stolen the dream of Nanami. Nanami was a selfless work horse you gladly gave his life for the next generation. Seeing someone evil end up in the exact position he dreamed of. The fact MeiMei was made into a pdf is meant to hammer home her villainy and moral bankruptcy. The greediness wasn't enough to make her feel truly evil, so I can understand depicting her as what some (myself included) believe are the single most Evil category of people. If she had just been greedy, the contrast wouldn't have been hammered home. I understand why people are upset, but it's primarily due to the failure to pick up on what should have been a very clear literary contrast. It's not like in other anime where it's played off as not a big deal, it's MEANT to be abhorrent. Having any sort of positive reaction to the scene would undermine its purpose.

To boycott jjk over it is ridiculous and missing the point. The point is mei mei is the foil to nanami, instead of helping and valuing the youth. You know, no one bats an eye when jjk shows hundreds of people, women, kids, elderly, brutally and graphically dismembered, tourtoured, decapitated, and murdered in the most painful and gruesome ways conceivable. Quite the opposite; everyone gets pumped. The more brutal and bloody, the more hype. Have a scene where a naked older sister is in bed with her fully clothed albeit underaged little brother, where nothing graphically sexual happens or is confirmed to have happened or will happen, and people lose their minds. Did she make some very inappropriate comments? Yup. Could those comments be interpreted very badly? Absolutely. Could she have just been teasing him in a very gross and inappropriate way without ever crossing the line from sexual harassment to incestuous pedophilia? Yes. And as far as we know for certain that's where it ended and I personally have no desire to create a head cannon where that line was crossed. But why are people ok watching 100s of people die horrible deaths and watching the act of murder being glorified but then lose it over a scene like this where the worst parts have to be imagined and implied?

It's a trope for a reason and you changing it is literally changing their culture. You keep saying that the scene needs justification but who are you to decide? it's not your art the creator believes it belongs there so it does and if your gonna argue that "not every story of SA should be them overcoming it because not everyone does" then logically your gonna get the sad story of the boy that hasn't realized he's being abused yet and you should be mad about that that's a very sad thing to think about but ultimately yeah it's has jokes and action but it's a sad show with death and gore showing some of the worst parts of humanity I don't think it should justify SA but you shouldn't act as though the show sets some kinda morale standard when one of the most loved characters is a curse that will kill anyone and everyone because they happen to feel like it and supposedly "good" characters have been show to not care about humans

She was torturing a helpless opponent in the train tunnels. She says she values human lives by how much she can profit from them. She is willing to casually risk Ui Ui's life in a fight. Mei Mei was always a monster.

Tbh I don't really think it's a big deal. First of all, it's fiction. Second, the whole point of the Mei Mei's character is that she's morally bankrupt and reprehensible. The meaning of the scene is to double down on how twisted Mei Mei is as a person. Also, she isn't naked. She's clearly wearing a robe when she answers the phone.

You didn't even need the second point. The fact that this is fictional is enough of a rebuttal.

Inconsolable trauma? I am not sure that I understand the reaction to this scene. I can understand that the implication of SA is absolutely horrific, but personally I didn't get an SA impression. I agree that if she were fully nude as is implied that it would be wildly inappropriate, but I am not sure that I got the impression that she was serious about anything. I didn't get the impression that she was assaulting him or planning on assaulting him. She has never given off predator vibes or the impression that she was attracted to wui wui in the least. I hate that I need to clarify but I am in no way in favor of this behavior or condoning it, but I am sure if I got the same impression as some people and I don't know what I might be missing. I feel like people are acting like it's obviously predatorial behavior but I just didn't get that impression. I am absolutely open to the idea that I am wrong or misunderstanding something.

I never got that vibe either from that scene. Sure it's weird and creepy that she was naked with her younger brother but the kid was clothed. It's not like she was about to tell him to stick it in or anything like that. She legit just suggested that they stay in bed cause the technique wears him out. There's nothing predatory about it. People are just weird

When i read the scene i glossed over it. I had assumed there was a context error. Its already established the siblings have a unhealthy relationship. Mei mei was never a morally sound character. I think the scene was intentionally lefy vague. Our minds will fill in the blank. So reader has option to insert the worst scenario for mei mei. My take away was she was emotionally manipulating her brother. Grooming him to place her life above his.

As someone who reads the manga and analyzes things, would love to hear your thoughts on actually re examining if it’s still true to say JJK has strong female characters and does it better than most Shonen/animanga. Bc I think it may have started out that way, with women who start strong, but are slowly but surely removed from the storyline and those superficially strong positions. There’s a video I just watched from a KZbinr called esper about JJK’s women and I don’t think every point lands 100% but it’s an interesting perspective I highly recommend
