Yeah no shit, it's called withdrawal and it's not supposed to be pleasant. And it does apply to everyone - you feel miserable when you quit something you "love" because you've been artificially spiking your dopamine so unnaturally high that normal life is barely appealing. This is not how humans were designed to exist. You do difficult things because they eventually get easy, which incrementally makes your life better. If you just do what "makes you happy" all the time, the opposite will happen and you will incrementally become more miserable. It's like eating ice cream for every meal.

That’s the essence of it. Even if you are a responsible person, even the slightest hesitation to put off something you’re supposed to do will continue to grow and grow. Speaking from experience, my life is night and day difference when I’m not engaging in this game. You realize how much time is actually required to get anywhere in this game, and if you translate those hours to irl skills instead of the 28 on that stupid ass clicking simulator you would be an expert in w/e you’re practicing. It’s truly astonishing.

2:27 As a former RuneScape addict who thankfully managed to quit for over 3 years, this exact thought process is what helped me stay away and actually exponentially level up my life. It is a terrifying realization that all of the work, progress, and effort you put into RuneScape are just files on a server. They're gone the moment you turn the screen off. Great video, this will be helpful for a lot of people trying to better themselves and their life.

Glad you're doing well! Just wanted to add because i've seen this time and time again, most people who quit even if they sell all their items or de iron where applicable still end up coming back because they end up board and can't stay busy. They have a void in their life, it doesn't go away when they stop playing. Also a rebuild is also one of the more exciting things you can do in rs(especially for the most chronic gamers) so yeah I just don't think that's the way or at least it needs more thought. Great video though.
@jordanharoldbailey

Yeah, and it's worse that that is encouraged by the community or at least not talked about. The whole "you never quit" meme reinforces the idea that it's impossible to quit, so when you really want to you're throw a load of stuff out by other people who are so entrenched into the addiction that it makes it hard to go against the grain.

I have absolutely no control over myself when it comes to addictions and it's either 0 or 100 for me I feel like giving it up entirely is the best choice for me, the same with smoking etc. I cannot limit myself because then I'll instantly get back into the same bad habits. A lot of people don't understand what it's like to have this personality trait I guess.

My opinion would be not to teach others to quit runescape as such but rather 1) Identify if it is a detriment/addiction to that individual and 2) How to maintain a healthy balance. This applies to pretty much anything in life which I have found is more important as it translates to other aspects. As I recently purchased my new house and currently doing renovations after work, I can maybe play 3/4 hours a week which is more than enough for myself to decompress and relax a little which is also important.

I respect your transparency in this video. I don't mean to take anything away from you when saying this. I don't think the issue is people playing the game so much. I play rs now but it's secondary to everything in my life. The issue with a lot of people who play is that they make rs their main priority. Like you said you set yourself back by prioritizing the game over other aspects. Im currently a youth leader at church, a 8u LL baseball head coach, a husband and an active uncle along with having a full time job. A lot of ppl who don't play rs are still set back in life because of what they deem "important". You have to find balance in whatever you do, and that includes things like rs.

Congratulations on leaving anything that is unhealthy foremost. I do play and have played osrs and back in the days I do have a 99 once I reached than 99 completed all the F2P portion of the game and leveled decently into 70's I took a 2 break without touching it or anything came back maybe few days" just to look around". I play casually ( had two people at g.e say your not leveling up your wasting xp gains) along those I responded I work full time I only play casually few hrs a day max usually it's I'm going to complete this quest maybe do some fletching or whatever for remaining time and call it a day ( there's a limit I strictly adhere too regardless if what two think) on my 5 year account I believe some days I don't get to go online other days I do that's just the way it goes sometimes. Even after reaching 99 only in one stat I'm actually quite happy that I could achieve something I only dreamt of as younglin ( I think many people dream off too having 99 or 99's which many players didn't) I also understand I'll may never max out my stats or be at the highest end of content without either sacrificing my time and dropping serious hours into game. ( In all honesty that's never happening ) My osrs is something casually. I think back in the day my highest early 60's ( 61-62) that's about being 80's in nowdays. ( Resource back then was lot more harder)

I dont know why this video got recommended in my youtube home feed. Maybe it's a sign lol (I would like to clarify that I did not intentionally search for "quit runescape" or any quit related stuff). But I feel you, I am somewhere in between quitting and addicted. Personally, I had to take leaves just to play runescape as an adult. I tried to fit in 2-3 hours into the game but I feel like its an exhaustive and extremely slow process to achieve all 99's. Well, since I am here, what would be your advice?
@jordanharoldbailey
@jordanharoldbailey 5 ай бұрын
It all depends on how many factors there are that help make it easy for you to default and 'afk' your brain into gaming. There's neurochemistry reasons, environmental reasons, behavioural reasons, mental health/trauma reasons... would be hard to say without knowing specifics (obviously don't share) but I think what helped me most was the identity shifting element. I had to recreate my self image as someone who doesn't play games, and that's scary because it's brand new, but it's paid off. Instead of 'I'm day 100 of not playing games' its more 'I just don't play games, that's just who I am'. Hope that helps!
@Kialok
@Kialok 5 ай бұрын
I believe that in OSRS it is all about the journey rather than the goal. Let's say some day you reach all 99s. Its the coolest achievement, the absolute goal - but what's then? You basically finished the game. You can now either quit, go for post 99 xp or start the insane grinds of collection log items. You're always hunting for a bigger and more crazier goal that takes you further down that path. Don't you know the feeling when you waited years to play a game like RDR2 and then you rush the game and have nothing to do or look forward anymore? I try to play OSRS in a way where I try to enjoy whatever im doing at the moment. For example: I don't have a dragon axe yet. Sometimes in the future I will go down the mysterious path of the Dagannoth dungeon and try to get that shiny dragon axe. Im really looking forward to that. But there is zero rush. Maybe I will do it in a few weeks, maybe months, maybe even in a few years? I have so many fun things to do in OSRS but there is absolutely zero necessity to hurry up. I am really looking forward to trying my luck at bandos or see how the raids are - but why should I rush that to get it all. What is there in the end? More DPS, more grinds. In my opinion OSRS is a game that is not made to be finished. It is endless. It gives you the opportunity to play at your own pace, set your own unique goals and slowly climb up the latter and do whatever you enjoy most at the moment. It doesn't matter if you quit for a day, weeks or months - you will be at the same point, can talk to the same folks and enjoy the game.
@zzlqo
@zzlqo 5 ай бұрын
@@Kialok I have to agree with you the game is endless. Everyone has their own pace and objectives to achieve and to rush the game to complete all 99's. But that's just my goal to get all 99s but it will probably take years from now lol. Guess I will take it and just enjoy the game slowly. Man I wish I was a kid again! I feel like I grew up too fast. turning 30 next year in an blink of an eye.. But I don't think I would be able to achieve all 99s. I am heavily invested in my software development career and set out to open a food business in some 2-3 years time. So the grind has to shifted to reality sadly. I hope my son is able to continue my progress lol (and he's only 18 months).

RuneScape isn't to blame for you wasting too much time on video games, it's up to you how long you play for, you can't blame a game for that. There's no difference between playing runescape for 1 hour vs 12 hours and for example drinking 1 beer or 12 beer, too much is hardly ever good. I see your point but i think you should just reconsider whether the game is at fault or you are.
@jordanharoldbailey
@jordanharoldbailey 5 ай бұрын
It's my responsibility to overcome the behavioural addiction, but it's silly to say that the game didn't play a part. Game is specifically designed to keep you playing forever. No encouragement to moderate except a warning you get for playing 4 hours in a row. Degen sessions encouraged in the community (pulling 140s, EHP comps, sleep dep, etc.) You're rewarded and socially encouraged to play in excess by your clan/friends/streamers. Think it's time for companies to at least acknowledge the damage they're causing/encouraging as their incentivised to get you to play forever, especially nowadays (modern gaming).
@aarondivis1331
@aarondivis1331 5 ай бұрын
I think your advice pretty much covers any addiction. Playing 8 hours a day and being super high ranked on the leaderboards, you were definitely wasting your life away. This doesn't mean that all leisure time is bad, and it doesn't mean you have to measure everything you do by how much money it makes you. All things in moderation. I don't know exactly the point I'm trying to make, except it's something along the lines of... Runescape isn't the bad guy here. It's your addiction to Runescape. It would be the same case with any activity you're addicted to, including work.
@jordanharoldbailey
@jordanharoldbailey 5 ай бұрын
I'd go as far to say the games play a huge part. I wouldn't pretend that they don't know what they're doing and incentivise the continued playing of them. The goal is to get you to not stop playing, and by now they know how to do that. They ought to know by now the damage that they're causing, at least.

This is why I really liked the recent stuff going on with Palworld. Everyone jumped on it for 2 weeks and then it's all over and people have moved on. Some game outlets bleeted about how Palworld is over, the Palworld devs responded with something to the effect of "If you've all played the game, enjoyed it, and finished with it for now - do that, we don't want to consume you with our game forever, come back maybe when we do an expansion if you want". Really healthy stuff, and responsible stuff coming from a dev too. It highlights that I don't think all games are bad, the nasty addictive ones like RS are particularly bad tho like damn.

Ngl, I’m feeling like this now. I started in 07, played until eoc dropped and then quit. When OSRS dropped, I played it but I never stuck around and quit for many years. Then in November of last year, some irl shit happened and I wanted to escape. I came across a KZbin video of the game and was like why not. In 6 months, I’ve gone from base 50cb stats to maxed, base 75 skills and a quest cape with over 350 experts in TOA. I went from a 3m bank to 2.5bill. I did all that and much more in 6months. Thankfully I’m doing well irl but this game has consumed me even though I’m out of the rut I was in back in November. I’ve literally nolifed it which is how I managed to make so much progress in such a short span of time. Bear in mind, I haven’t touched it in years. Recently I’ve been grinding the inferno and I’m so close to the cape but during one of my attempts (think I’m around 40, 3 zuks), it hit me like man, wtf am I doing with my life. I’ve lost weight because I forget to eat. I don’t think gaming is even that bad of a hobby but this game specifically is too much for someone like me. I can’t find that balance. I’m considering just quitting cold turkey atp. Regular games like Elden ring I can manage and find the balance easily. I think it must be an MMO thing tbh

Now I’m not sad anymore, so maybe if I get my life in check, in regards to my weight, training, hobbies etc, I won’t wanna ruin that stuff upon a potential return to the game. Last night, was the first time in a long time I didn’t log on. I chilled and played a bit of Elden ring, preparing for the dlc next week and what a relief it was to do that, not because I was playing a game, but because I wasn’t playing osrs lmao. Osrs feels like a bit of a chore to me right now. If anything, I’m kinda glad I got rich quick because being end game is what’s making me bored. If I was mid game, there’d still be a lot for me to do. Right now, with my bank and stats, I feel like I’ve completed the game. Granted I’m not maxed, but I’m in a better position than most players ever will be which is good enough for me. A lot of people say that you never quit, well that's only true if you're still playing. The vast majority of people who played runescape will never log in again at this point, and haven't in years at the least either. It's just survivor bias, and or in this case failing to survive and thrive mostly. That plus I got sick of the idea that in this world you are either winning or being used by the winners in life, and you can't accomplish anything in this world, for yourself or for others, without being a winner in some capacity. Some people benefited immensely from Runescape, it's not the players, but the creators and later shareholders, and employees, content creators etc. to a lesser extent. The idealized version of yourself for 99.9% of us isn't playing Runescape, or if they are, only as a side activity with a small portion of their time.

I get where you're coming from. I liken it to how I used to look at people that would go to bars all week and blow their money away, with nothing to show for it. Destroying their body & their financial future. Why? It's their vice, and they enjoy all the "good" that comes with that lifestyle. Those people can look at anyone who plays games for 8+ hours a day and ask the same question, observe the same issue (depending on the financial aspect at least). At the end of the day, I think everyone has their vices for better or worse. it's a topic that spans across addiction, coping mechanisms, self worth / respect, trauma, probably a laundry list of possible correlations and causations. I know video games will never leave my life, I cherish them. There's nothing wrong with playing them no matter the age. Belittling people for their hobbies will always be lame since I've come to learn and accept the above. I'd be interested to know if you've had a hard time balancing things in life, knowing I'm that way. For people like us, it's a battle of moderation. Quitting Runescape cold turkey is exactly what I did the first time I played a few years ago. I'm used to playing games a lot, but when I went to check my time played in Lumbidge, I had 12 days played out of 24-25 days since my account was created. I was baffled & quit on the spot. Typing this up as I complete my 400th lap of the Canifis agility course of the day on a new group HCIM. I've always had self awareness of my video game addiction but whether I decide to act on it depends upon how much I care about life at the moment. Clearly not much right now, but I'm sure something will spur me up in time to go chase life the way you are now. Glad you're there & appreciate life. Best wishes

I dont even like the game anymore, just grinding it as a habit, hoping to reach some contents that I will like when I have high enough stats or skill to do it. Cannot focus on anything else. My vice used to be FIFA which doesn't even try and hide how much of a waste of time it is, you build your Ultimate Team for a year and then the new FIFA comes out and your team is now obsolete. I am still partial to playing Football Manager occasionally and gaming is definitely fun, but having it as one your top hobby is dangerous if it gets to the level of addiction to the point you're playing daily for multiple hours. I used to wonder how my Dad went from obsessed with video games as a kid to pretty much never playing them as an adult but once you realise how empty and unfulfilling games are you completely understand. When you're on your deathbed you want to tell people of the things you did, the stuff you achieved, the things you saw, the business you built, the people you met. Using your hours to play video games is robbing your future self of those memories.

The majority of the player base consists of bots, gold farmers, gold sellers, and gambling addicts. The rest I feel are trapped by sunk cost fallacy with the few streamers, new players, and pkers sprinkled in. I just can't do the sweatshop labor for a number to go up any longer.

I'm about to turn 20, and I just recently got back into my addiction of RS, and you echo my exact thoughts on the matter. I have NOTHING. All this work is for NOTHING. I plan on having my own business, and it's just a distraction, I'm imagining how successful my rs account can be "Oh I'll be able to do barrows on my ironman" "I'll invest or flip this and get a t-bow on my main". All of those hours could be more effectively used in something actually productive. I imagine myself in a cold concrete box "After 1000 hours, I finally have achieved my goal!" and I point to a laptop with a stupid fucking 500 polygon dragon falling over and fireworks going off over my characters head, while a disinterested person watches, what am I proving to them or myself? VS all that time that could've been used for tangible, respectable (Outside and self actualization) gains, beacons of success.

wanted to make the classic joke, "You're just taking a break," but after watching the video in full, I can appreciate that your relationship with the game is a very unhealthy one. I have periods of addiction once every few years, playing 8 hours a day for a month or two when I want to significantly progress my account. But I only allow myself to do this once I feel like I've reached a significant milestone in life and I can now take a break while I transition and plan for the future. In ways, I'm fortunate as this addiction usually subsides once I've completed my last in-game goal. These days, I just log in to do my dailies for 20 minutes and log off (a nice part of my daily routine) and maybe watch some behemoth before I go to bed. I'm 29, and the emotions you're talking about, about creating and providing value, speak loudly to me as these are things I'm actively trying to achieve as well. But ultimately, I don't think escapism is an entirely bad thing; I believe everything is about balance. Everyone uses, watches, or does something for that sense of escapism, but indulging in that thing too much and actively neglecting your real life for that thing is the bad thing. From what you're expressing, it seems like you've never been able to work out how to play the game in a balanced and mature way. Which I'm not saying is easy; RuneScape is very addictive, but there are elements of what you're saying that I can't relate to, like forming your identity around the game and taking time off work to do a new release. Although these things might have happened slowly, they seem to me like a willingness to engage in the darker side of escapism. Obviously, RuneScape is an MMO, so it encourages people to make friends, join clans, and do things together, but I think that's maybe where we differ as players because, personally, I play RuneScape as a single player, rarely interacting with other players, and I currently hold the belief that taking time off work to play RuneScape is ridiculous. But I imagine if I were playing with a group, who didn't hold that belief as strongly, maybe I might soften my position and fall slightly deeper into a willingness to allow this escapist thing I do to take more prevalence in my life. Who knows? There are obviously way more factors than that, but I don't know. I'd personally never play an Ironman either (never mind achieving rank 25). You were surely aware of the time investments involved. So, yeah. Ultimately, your relationship with the game was incredibly unhealthy, and I respect that you recognise that and believe that you've done a good thing in sharing your experience to help players going through similar things as you. But I also hope you recognise that the way you and your clan play the game isn't the same way a lot of other more casual people play. I remember being 10 and saying I would play RuneScape when I'm 50, and I personally still believe I will, provided the servers don't get shut down. I have no issues playing games at my age, provided I have my priorities in order and have a healthy relationship with the things I choose to use as escapism, and I believe that once you've gone cold turkey for a while and organised and prioritised your real life and made some significant progress in that, you'll realise you were only taking a break.

8 years for £2000. I'm glad OSRS is a game and not a job for most of us in decent economies! (insane to me that I have to add that caveat but Venezuela). Glad your business is doing well, but I think finding a middle ground between work and play is the best option for most people, but I do agree RS is one of the harder games to find that balance with!

this is a clear example of people playing games as if that is their job, this applies to all games not just osrs, how i play any games but especially mmorpgs is that i play all sorts and types of mmos not trying to be the best out there, just enjoying my couple of hours of free time, gaming is a hobby and it should be looked at as any other hobby, my stand on video games in general is that it is the better entertainment option out there, like lets be real whatever you do either building bussines, working out or whatever you will need some kind of entertainment at some point and to me its better to play couple hours of eso wow ff14 or osrs for example then watching some woke bs on netflix or any other platform nowadays, reading a book is a close second to gaming for me. but as i said its a hobby you can and probably should have more hobbies like again for me its gaming, fishing and collecting random stuff, then again thats just my opinion and how i see things.

i graduated college in 2022 and started playing osrs because I had more free time; I started playing thinking osrs would be a side hobby for me. However, the game consumed so much of my time, and even when I wasn't playing the game, I was thinking about it. only recently did I have the willpower to quit. I find myself with a lot of free time now (I never developed any other hobbies besides osrs) where I'm still being "unproductive" in other ways besides playing osrs, but it feels so good to not have all my waking thoughts consumed by this videogame

No need to drown in your sorrows. You got this! Take a step backwards and try to objectively analyze what would be the best move for you. Maybe you have to bite the bitter apple and get higher education or maybe you can try to take education lessons within your company to get a more unique skillset. Try to disregard your feelings of shame or disappointment in yourself and take massive action. There is no shame in failure or going down a wrong path. You live, you laugh, you fail - that's completely normal. Then you recorrect your course and everyday you will get a small step forwards and overtime this accumulates to amazing length. Soon you will get past those who constantly weigh their feelings and move in circles. Take the same approach you used to grind an OSRS goal and apply it to your work or education - its the same pattern. Its not to late. There are hard working people who change careers in their mid 30s or even 40s. It is absolutely possible if you take massive action! Trust in yourself and disregard your feelings. You know what moves would further your situation.

I get this feeling when I see these 1000 hour (insert chunk) journey videos. People act like they are making a career out of it. I'm sorry but 100k views is about 500 bucks. And no, never dunk on anyone's passion if its not hurting them or others; but there is no way you are a functioning member of society making 1000 hour gameplay videos, with arbitrary rules that you made because you already played the game so much its the only thing that makes it "interesting" for you. There just isn't enough hours in life for that to work. Sure, maybe you came off a little preachy in this video but I can see that your heart is in the right place, trying to help others see what you see, unfortunately it's up to us. Godspeed brother, I enjoyed the insight.
