My biggest takeaway from this game: I love seeing players stare at their shot when it hits the post as though they are done playing. Result: Leafs get an odd man rush while Dvorak ponders what could have been and they end up scoring on that odd man rush. Well done Dvorak. Well done. Please stay focused and don’t dwell on what could have been. Stay involved and make those plays ‘what has become’: effort and results from wanting it more than the other team.

@ frustrating to see. Happens in so many sports. Play to the whistle / horn / goal / made shot (no matter which sport you’re in). Analyze your shot when you get back to the bench. Dvorak has been guilty of this too many times this year. He quits mid play when something goes wrong and then accidentally creates opportunities for the other team.

@@SamtheBravesFan there is a difference between losing while giving your team chance as a goalie and losing the game letting in every 2nd or 3rd shot go in. If Dobes has couple games where he lets in 3-4 goals in a period like Monty does, than i am willing to say that we have two goalies but neither of them is a starter material and that Habs might try the playoffs next year. I know that Monty is not a starter material for sure, Dobes has that potential, we will see if he lives up to it.
@petrblazek60519 сағат бұрын
I said on some Habs Facebook page that Monty is losing his starter spot with Habs, because he is letting at least 1 weak goal every other game and i got like 20 comments about how I dont understand hockey. Is it so bad to say that Monty is a really good backup goaltender and not a starter? Because thats what he is. In any playoff team he would be backup. The only reason that he got a starter role is that Allen had pretty bad season last year and Primeau is just not even NHL level goalie. Thats facts and 90% of fans are calling me stupid while they are delusional thinking Monty is more than he actually is. Dobes has starter potential and he should overtake Monty sooner or later and i wish Monty well, but Habs are not going to win enough games to get into the play-offs if he is the starter in my opinion.

"Monty is a really good backup goaltender and not a starter." Why do you spend so much energy stating the obvious? Any seasoned hockey observer will tell you that. On the other hand, you don't draw conclusions about a goalie based on 3-4 games. It's like saying a trader is good after one positive month. We just don't know what the future holds for Dobes. He could be a flash in the pan, while with Montembeault we know what to expect after many years of goaltending, which is a decent goaltender who is more prone to bad nights than a star goaltender.

It’s good to have two goalies that could potentially start. Obviously the habs were gotten by a really good offence. These are the kind of games the leafs win. This is part of the reason why they aren’t built to be a playoff team. Playoffs is more about holding onto 1 or 2 goal leads or often holding on in ties. This sort of onslaught rarely occurs postseason. Monty shut the leafs out before, this is basically an offensive team getting even. You cannot put this all on the goalie. I think they should add a defensive piece with some size, who can wear down guys, which would complement Hutson and take pressure off him to play a role he simply can’t handle

The game looked like 4 different teams! Period 1 leafs vs period 1 Habs then we saw the period 2/3 Leafs and the p2/3 Habs. Young team who got reminded they still need to work on consistency. Monty could not make a save in the 2nd half. He looked unfocused. Hutson's defense was exposed especially on that Nylander break away. But only the 2nd regulation loss since Chicago game. So we all need to relax a bit. If this was against a top Western conference team we would have more perspective. But this was the leafs and it drives us all crazy. It's the next game that will show the character to the team.

They weren't going to win every game until the end of the season. It was tough the way they lost, but there were some good things there, as well as a learning experience for the second youngest team in the league. The Habs had the best record in hockey for the last two weeks and one of the best for about a month and a half primarily because their goaltenders bested the opposition's goaltenders. Tonight this dynamic was reversed. C'est la vie. Monty had some stellar saves along with some doubtful plays. Personally, I don't know why they keep putting Gallagher on the power play. Armia would be a better fit. Or Newhook. Brendan looks old and tired. He had a good first quarter, not so good second quarter and is carrying that into the second half. Slaf was not a factor. Again. After looking better recently, he reverted back to the mean. The 2024/25 mean. When the Habs had a 6-4 man advantage late in the game, he tried to fish a puck out of a scrum in front of Woll. He was not successful and the puck went up the ice the other way. Again, he just reached into the pile with one hand on his stick. He should have (cleanly) rammed his big body into a white sweater. He was not drafted because he possessed a Cooley skill set. He was drafted because he had a combination of size and OK skill. I see no indication that he is improving. He is signed for 8 years at $7.6 M per. Does that make you nervous? It does for me. Soon, we will not get value for him. We may not get much at all at those figures. There is cause for concern. It's too big a risk. He's pro rated for about 8 goals this year. Not good. Not good, at all. As I said here almost two months ago: He still has some currency from being drafted number one almost 2.6 years ago. I don't want a player who can "only play on the top line". Think about what his numbers would be if he played on any of the other lines. Certainly not worth that money. I would not take a chance to see if he pans out. The down side risks outweigh the upside risks, in my opinion. I'll give you 60 million reasons. There are no excuses. He has not been injured like Dach has and he plays with two stars. It's a salary cap world. We are risking an albatross (or load stone) here. The good news: Anderson looks born again. He looks like his Blue Jacket days. Dach is starting to look like his pre injury days. I am both surprised and thrilled. Dvorak brings a lot to the game. Offence is not one of them. Bring up the talented 20 year old Beck and see what he could do. Give Strubble a chance for tomorrow. If Dobes win tomorrow, give him the Tampa game , as well. In the early Spring of 1971, Sam Pollock didn't hesitate to sit the Vezina winning Roggie Vachon for the unproven, upstart Ken Dryden. We know what happened after that.

Hutson was not directly responsible for any of these goals. They were either the result of gaffes by his teammates or Montembeault's weakness. Also, the last one was an empty net goal. Plus/minus numbers never reflect what really happened on the ice. It's just a pure statistic without context. It means something, but as an analyst, you should never take it at face value. Ovechkin, soon to be the all-time leading scorer in NHL history, was in the minus column or barely in the plus column for years. Why is that? Because he was playing for one of the worst teams in the league.
