I think this is a good move for Montreal. Barron's development has stalled and his offense did not outweigh his defensive liabilities. Still need at least one more defenceman who can clear the front of the net. I still believe a backup goaltender is a greater need.

A nothing move. Not offensive, small as a D, older than Barron. yuk

This may sure that Matheson gets shipped out of town next.Savard may also be gone.Struble,and big M in laval are coming. Let's see how Carrier plays.

Lol..can he score a few 5 on 5 before you declare him a super duper star.

I'm not sure I see Mailloux ever becoming a top 4 defenseman and I'm not even sure he'll be a top 6....maybe a seventh playing some games and skipping others....Hopefully history will prove me wrong. I'm not saying he doesn't have upsides, but I just think he has some serious issues he doesn't seem to be addressing (I'm talking about his on ice game, not his off the ice behaviour, I don't really follow those stories.) Savard is probably going to leave before the end of the season or during the summer, unless Hugues feels like signing him to a short contract and let him retire in Montreal, but I think that Savard feels like he has a couple of good years left in the tank...Hopefully Reinbacher will get to play some serious hockey before the end of this season...and hopefully, attending the team meetings and spending time with the trainers even while injured will pay off....and hopefully, again, he will show up next season ready to be the extremely solid defenseman we all hope he can become. I think Carrier may be able to take some pressure off Reinbacher's shoulders allowing him to play at his full potential if we're lucky...I still kinda hope to see the habs fight for a playoff spot until the end of the season even though I think it is an unlikely scenario. I just think that our young players need to learn to play competitive games where the result truly matters...sure another high draft pick is always interesting, but at some point you need your young players to learn to win when it counts and to deal with that pressure......Thankfully Suzuki and Caufield were there when the team got to the Stanley cup final, but we have added many new players since.

There clearly was a need for a player like that in Montreal.

28 years old for a defensive defenseman is usually when they're at their peak and it usually lasts until they are 33 more or less I'd say

The Habs have to resort to getting experienced Ds because they don't have the competent D coaching (Robidas and Letowski) to develop the young defensive talent we already have. Notice that in the past few years the development of our young D core has remained stagnant. Apart from Guhle pretty much all the others are stuck in neutral.
@petermelville55243 сағат бұрын
This is a nothing trade. The Habs really need a top six physical center who can excel at the 200ft game, has the wheels and is 25 or under. They need to get their forward group more productive, more physical etc....Owen Tippet.
@petermelville55243 сағат бұрын
Baron is a young player who is going to develop great in Nashville! I bet he is so thankful that he is going to play with a team that needs him, and will work with him. Habs do not need Carrier, an average 26 yr old player on the worst team. Kovicevic was a better guy to keep. They only got him because he is a Francophone. They have two great right handed prospects in Logan and 'Bacher.

I just do not get why you are talking about Rotenbergs, with a smile. Things will not be normal with Russia and will not be normal for at least decades. The way you are indifferent about politics is very political. It seems you have absolutely no idea about the world your living in. In Russia hockey is all about politics and nothing about sport.

This was a mistake made in an attempt to cover up the mistake they made when they traded Kovacevic for peanuts. The problem wasn't the defensemen, the real problem is Marty and his "concepts" defensive schemes. Just watch, the new guy will have ZERO impact on the Habs goal differential. Defencemen take longer to develop, this was a mistake. I think management panicked, is grasping for straws. What they need is a real coach, not some guy who promises to "learn on the job". What a joke.

This with this trade is you can't just compare one to one . When looking at JB we can't just compare him to AC, but to all the other young D-men in the Habs system that are getting ready to leap frog him. AC brings something different to the team then JB offered and that won't put him in direction competition with those young D-men that were about to bypass JB.

This is a bad trade, he’s 5 yrs older and slower, Baron has a better upside.
@cotesteph5 сағат бұрын
Barron was like a poor man's Mike Reilly, couldn't stand watching him. Carrier is a solid, not flashy D, who should hopefully get Struble out until Savard or Matheson gets traded

I tried this exact trade in mid Dec on FHM11 and it went through straight up, oh and Laine only returns in Feb in that game ouch.

Are we forgetting that Lekky had lots of ice time and opportunity to show his offensive skills in MTL. After an 18goals rookie season, he did nothing on offence. I loved the guy, but getting a young d with lots of potential and a second round pick on top of that… was a good trade option. Do you know what that second round ended up being? Part of the trade up to the 21st pick and a future top center for the Habs HUGES who is killing it in Michigan.
@LanwarderСағат бұрын
Do you mean Hage or you truly meant Huges? If the second option, who is Huges? (Maybe it's a common nickname that I just happened to miss or a joke I am not getting or something...or maybe you just typed too fast and made a mistake, it happens to pretty much everyone. I'm just genuinely curious about it, not trying to mock you.)

Hey Jesse. Do you think HUGO has not inquired about what Savard would want on a contract extension??? I am sure they would sign him if he agreed to a short term deal…. But I doubt Savard would sign under 3-4yrs deal. Also, even if Habs trade Savard, nothing stop him from coming back next year.

I think Barron’s ceiling is a bigger body MA Bergeron. Anyone remember him? I think he’s shown he’s got a good shot, may score some goals but not great defensively. Good luck to him!

I don’t see it. MA Bergeron was way better offensively and way worse defensively lol

It’s one thing to be big it’s another to use it. That is a problem for us we don’t have big guys that play with grit. We need true power forwards that have a mean streak. We need defenseman that are first too corner and if not leave their forward on the ice. First use the stick then the body. If this guy is better defensively then I’m all for it. We need shutdown defensemen we already have ones that are good on offence. Mailloux would be here if he could get his defensive game going. Why don’t we have guys that are both. If any sign Ekblad would move do whatever it takes.

(I understand it might not happen) Was thinking maybe: Anaheim Receives: Pittsburgh’s 2nd 2025 Carey Price Michael Pezzetta Montreal Receives: Robby Fabbri Jérémie Biakabutuka Looking forward to hearing people’s thoughts.

3 year contract a big negative for a small mediocre d-man. Perhaps they could offer Savard a 3 year deal to stay around the same cap hit.
