Greetings from Guelph, Ontario. Thank you Dave for what you do for the photo editing community. I have followed you for quite a few years now and really appreciate your many instructional videos no matter what subject or which software that's being targeted. My favorite is TK-Fridays. So much so that my family knows not to disturb me on Fridays beginning at 8 a.m. when the video hits KZbin. :) Cheers.

I use Orton quite a lot, to 'show-off' areas of my humble images and indeed - paint though a mask to create the effect you demonstrate, but never would I have though of pushing it through a LM. I would simple dial-back the effect in the opacity (brush or mask). I also use the edge mask/expand/blur method you demonstrated some weeks ago too and with great effect I hasten to say. The tutorial today however, seems to produce more consistent results across the image and quicker. Or maybe that's just me. I just don't know how you do it Dave... I enjoy your tutorials very much & really look forward to Fridays!!

Hello Dave, thank you for another great episode. The linear profile is a great tool to retain control of the editing process. In this video, I particularly enjoyed how you applied the smart Orton effect.

Hi Dave: Another great TK Friday episode and thanks for releasing this on Good Friday. Big thanks to Stanley for sharing this image. I really liked how you brought out the shadow detail in this image and created such a wonderful and engaging image. I will have to go back into my Lr Catalogue to select some of my own images to try these techniques will. I am very confident that I will find many images to use. 🤣 I am also seeing the big benefits of use the Topaz Sharpen AI application, so I will have to get this. Keep well and enjoy this long weekend. Cheers, Keith

Thank you Dave for this tutorial and as I have mentioned on other videos, there is often a hidden nugget in your videos. This time it was the use of the Orton effect. Perfect!!! .....(not Mojave, Joshua Tree National Park)

Given the steps you took to protect the sky, I was surprised not to see you save it as a channel which would have made the editing a bit easier.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 жыл бұрын
I didn't feel the need because I used two different masks. One for Highlights and one that was targeting the dark tones and they both needed to be specific. I used a Lights one for the sky with some level adjustments and a Darks 3 with some levels adjustments for the darker areas of the foreground I needed to lighten.
@allumpfa2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, What an amazing transformation! Loving Linear Profiles. I did have one question on the process you went through and that was with the final color grading layer with midtones 3 to adjust the contrast. I think that it kind of undid some of the work done earlier on the sky darkening and could maybe have benefited from some masking out of the sky?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter. If you don’t like what is happening to the sky, which I did like, you could put that layer in a group with a white mask. Then command or control click on the first sky mask to load it as a selection and use the TK Combo or CX Panel to hide the selection. Now with a black brush at a lower opacity say around 20% or higher depending how much you want to remove, brush away some or all of the effect in the sky.

Always fun seeing your TK videos. The new thing for me this week was the way you used, and modified, a lights mask to select the sky rather than using the "select sky option." So easy to forget that they are alternative ways to do things and they may yield different - and perhaps better - results. But this leads me to the question - why did you not use the "select sky option" here?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 жыл бұрын
Good Question Steve and thanks. I wanted a better blend into the background mountain. That mountain is much lighter the the foreground and wanted a good transition.

Happiness is TK Friday. I like these full image edits. For me, some of the techniques you show are helpful review. And you always have a few editing tips that are both new and helpful to me. Unrelated question. What software are you using to capture your screen while editing.

Dave, I'm always confused about when and why to merge down rather than create a stamped layer. Is there a rule of thumb or a reason to do one rather than the other?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 жыл бұрын
I like to merge down when I want to save some file space but you don't have to. I Stamp layers when I need to use a plugin like Luminar or Topaz Studio. If your top layer is an adjustment layer you would not be able to use the plugin because it needs to be a pixel layer and the Stamped Layer will be a pixel layer.

Does using the linear profile(which I always use) as well as Topaz denoise/sharpen and then using this technique of bringing back the shadows debunk the theory of exposing to the right on the histogram. Why not always underexpose and follow this editing technique.
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly2 жыл бұрын
No, I would still use your best picture taking practices and bracket exposures when you have a very high dynamic range. This image was really under- exposed but what made it usable was the fact that it had such a low ISO. I believe it was ISO 100. However, products like Topaz DeNoise Ai can really do a good job of removing noise in super noisy images. I mainly used Sharpen Ai in this image to bring back some focus and remove the moderate amount of noise in the shadows.

Dave, on my screen this video is really blurry. Can't make out anything on the right side where the panel is. Also, your adjustments are so subtle that i can not see a difference when you click before and after. Well maybe sometimes but not usually

Are your KZbin settings set for 1080p? That could be your problem. Sometimes I find KZbin readjusts those settings depending on your internet connection.

Dave, the only thing that looks weird on my phone's screen is the color of the sky. It looks so unnatural, I'd say too much cyan tint in it. May be I am too color blind :)

There are many, many other functions you can do with the TK panel other than luminosity masking. I find myself using the other functions very often and these other functions have produced remarkable results that I do not think I could have accomplished on my own.
