For me there are two many to remember all the time. Thanks for explaining the tool and thanks to Tony for the tool.

I always download the images and then make the changes myself BEFORE watching how you do them. As good as I think I'm getting, you never fail to add something new. Shrinking the mask & adding the feather is a particularly excellent tip that I didn't see coming. I am amazed how I ever got along without you & the TK8 panel. Thanks, as always!!

There yah go!!! Another hidden gem......the double vignette!!!!!!.....it is sometimes hard to recall the more complex uses of the TK8 panel as they are not needed for every image....however I vignette many images and so this is very very helpful.....

This was a wonderful presentation today, Dave. I loved the technique in the water scene with the formula to lighten the darker area of the sea, plus the saturation adjustment selecting the 2 colors using the mask calculator; I didn't know you could do that. TK Fridays is becoming what some people refer to in the TV world as "must see TV". I guess I can apply that to The Joy of Editing with Dave Kelly.

Now going to work on the images and transfer some of the techniques to my own. Thanks for another Friday treat and love your enthusiasm.

I have seen and bought many tutorials on the subject, however it is with YOUR tutorials that I feel that I am really learning how to use it. I'm already anxious and waiting for the next tutorial, because I'm sure I'm going to learn something new. Greetings

I enjoy your tk Friday videos, thanks very much. One thing I would like to see is -since selections are always 8bit is there any difference in using 8 bit selections and 16 bit masks? I know you use selections to selectively paint through to get what you want. Does the fact that taking a 16 bit mask and turning it into a selection makes it 8 bit affect the final results?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t find any problem doing it and have always been satisfied. Try this as a test and see if you can notice a difference. Apply the Mask to the layer and put that layer in a group with a black mask and mask the mask. Check your result. Then shut that layer off. Next make the same adjustment and this time paint through a selection and compare the results and see if you notice any difference. I do it both ways and don’t really seem to notice any difference.

The TK panel takes care to keep everything 16-bit throughout the mask-making process. Even when you use the mask calculator, it's all 16-bit throughout the calculations process (provided you start with a mask). So, until the point of actually outputting a mask, you're always working with16-bit masks. There are no intermediate 8-bit selections anywhere as you create, modify, and perform calculations using various masks generated by TK8. So, when you output the a 16-bit mask as an 8-bit selection, it's generally the first time anything 8-bit has been introduced into the process, and so it's a first-generation selection. First-generation 8-bit selections are indistinguishable from their 16-bit parent masks. It's only when you start intersecting (or doing other calculations) using multiple generations of 8-bit selections that you start to get a deteriorated final product. So, the 8-bit output selections from TK8's rigorous 16-bit workflow should not be a concern. You can confidently paint through these selections and not damage the 16-bit character of your image. That being said, it is possible to bring 8-bit selections into the mask-making process using the "My Channels" button, but TK8 will immediately convert these to 16-bit masks. As long as you're using a first-generation selection (like Select Sky and Select Subject), this should also not be an issue.

WHEN I SELECT THE SUBJECT, THE DARK FOLD ABOVE TO THE RIGHT OF THE PAIR IS ALSO SELECTED. HOW CAN I REMONE THAT SMALL AREA FRONM THE SELECTION?
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly 2 жыл бұрын
I would use the Object Selection Tool. Just make sure you are in the subtract mode. If not, hold down the Alt or Option key to change it while you are removing the undesired selection. That's not the only way but it is pretty effective.

Hey Dave, how's it going? I was watching this video again (I really enjoy re-watching them) and I have a question about the tip when you subtracted from a dark 1 mask a dark 3 mask to lighten a subject. My question is: Could the same be applied in reverse to darken? It might be a dumb question, but I wanted to throw it out there anyway.
