We appreciate all the comments and concerns about Henry's condition. While we know everyone has Henry's best interest at heart, please know that we have now been in touch with our Vet on no less than 10 occasions. We are trying EVERYTHING the vet thinks might help. We are blessed to have 2 very good vets trying to help Henry. We wish there was a quick fix for him or something that was guaranteed to help but that isn't how real farm life works. We, along with our vets, are trying very hard to save Henry. While we appreciate additional suggestions about his health, please just keep in mind how hard we are trying to help him and that there is always a difference between what is seen on a video and what is seen in real life. I've seen this type of illness in calves before and like your vet(s) have said it really is just a guessing game as to what it could be. My gut is leaning towards twisted gut. This is a condition that like anything else you have discussed will either work itself out or it won't. I hope y'all will not have to go down the road of putting him down, but if you do have to make that decision I pray that God will bless you both and your nearest and dearest with peace of mind that you did try everything you could. I will also pray that whatever it is that it works itself out. God bless and stay strong.

After 30 years of raising cattle one thing I've learned is a tube of good probiotics is a must for a sick calf. Sometimes there ruminate is very tricky to get started. The mineral oil is a good thing plus I have used some baking soda also. A twisted gut is a possibility although it's more common in horses. I've been there so be prepared to do what you have to it's never pleasant.

Yes, especially after a course of antibiotics! Antibiotics kill the good stomach bacteria (most likely the reason for the diarrhea) & the probiotics will replace them - which is needed for things to get back to normal!! Praying for you all to get back to & stay healthy! God bless!

Yes! I add Diamond v yeast, and have sodium bicarbonate available at all times. Banamine is tough for long term use, too. I’ve rescued many goats by snatching some cud from a healthy goat...I’ve never done that with my cows. I sure hope Henry recovers❤️🙏🏻

We used to mix up a quart of water with vegetable oil and baking soda; it always did the trick to get things worked out.

Need to try to get the cat to curl up and lay down with the calf preferably right on his side or belly and purr. Purring frequency and vibration supposedly accelerates healing and mending of broken bones and such or so I've heard. If true may help, certainly shouldn't hurt to try.

My prayers that your Henry pulls through this just fine. If he's to be a steer, that means one day being harvested, which means there's really a limit to how much you'll want to invest in vet bills... Sad reality. If he was bull quality then it might be a dif story. Sadly with all the meds in him he would not be usable for meat if he was to need be put down now. Farm life can be harsh. Again my prayers he pulls through this and thrives. He's such a beautiful calf. Both are. I'm not going to irk you by giving suggestions, because you're working with a vet and they know far more than I do as to what's been done, tried, etc. Hope has had other calves, have you asked her previous owners if they had any problems with those calves?

I hope during the upcoming weather and being more confined with his Mom and new brother, he will try and nurse and get stronger. You can only do all you can do financially as well. Maybe you can watch his stool to see if anything passes. Something is making him bloat up again, but maybe this new antibiotic will be the right one. Have they ever cultured the drainage? I'm praying for you Henry and all of you. Sarah, ya'll have taken excellent care of Henry just like you did with Hope in the past. As someone who knows nothing about cows, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing all of this. It is SO educational! I've often thought about getting a cow. Everything that I can learn is so important to me. It is hard to "learn" everything. I believe, from reading the comments, that it is a learning curve. ALL of these people have great ideas, and you have very good Veterinarians. Henry has the best shot he would EVER get! You are such good, loving people! I really mean that. Sometimes it is what it is. And it may be that Henry won't make it. If he doesn't, you KNOW that you have done all that you could. GOD bless

M&N McCallum Kevin and Sarah take very good care of all their animals, they're trying more for his health than many "farmers" would or do. Please don't judge. Maybe you or I would put the calf "out of his misery" but that might have more to do with the fact that maybe we don't want to take the time, energy, and expense of caring for a sick calf, they however have been stopping at nothing to try to make Henry well.
