I respect that everyone is entitled to their choice of a thumbs up or down in the review of each episode but I am always perplexed as to how any episode on either of Shawn’s channels gets a thumbs down. Shawn has never deviated from the focus or purpose in any episode of what his channel is about or his overall mission. So one can always anticipate the nature of each forthcoming episode. Each episode is also consistently without click bait, drama, personal attacks, political positions or many other things that are detractors for most of his viewers. What he does, the work ethic, strength & organizational skills always present in how he does things are reflected in each episode. And then of course, Cali, a star in her own right, adds great delight to each episode.......so, I expect that my rating will forever be in the thumbs up position!!!! This was another much enjoyed episode on the progression towards the continued building of your off grid wilderness homestead!! You & yours stay safe.
@pinky2245

Very well put, I couldn't agree more! I suspect the "thumbs down" people are just miserable in general and aren't happy unless they are bashing others, or they're just plain envious!
@judithburke1539

What the nay-sayers don't seem to understand is that any response adds to the algorithm for the channel. Take comfort in knowing that a thumbs down is really a benefit, in spite of the negative intent. Take care.😊

One of the best! For those of us who enjoy the "build" portions of your life's adventure, this was almost a pleasant overdose! With perfect amounts of Cali, cooking and overhead terrain shots, this episode exceeds all expectations. Its great to see the progress. My wife walks by occasionally and just shakes her head. She does not understand the attraction of a man building, from scratch, using basically his hands, a wilderness sanctuary. I think its great and am enjoying it from exactly the place most people would love to get away from. Chicago. Keep up the great work and thanks, as always, for the great videos.

I loved seeing Calli play with the dirt. We built our first home. My Dad taught his 3 sons-in-laws as we all built together on the family farm (4 houses, barns, shops, fencing). Back when we were strong, young, healthy. We did it all and had nearly 100 acres. We were well situated, close to town but had our own space and in a family commune. We each paid for our houses as we built them. I don't think I could do it, even back then, way out in the middle of nowhere, much less alone, like you are. Now our parents are gone, we sold our homes and live closer into town without so much to maintain. Keeping 100 acres, houses, barns, shops in repair got to be too much even with all of us out there. But I miss the days when we could do it all and the kids were little. And doing it together was fabulous. We worked together from dawn to dusk back in the day. We had horses, cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, dogs, ducks, geese. My word of advice to all those watching... there will come a time when you don't have the physical abilities (and sometimes the mental abilities) to work as hard as you do when you are younger. So do it now and then, when you hit your 50's, begin making a plan to be able to live out your life. For instance, locate close to your family, doctors, hospital, grocery store, etc (your errands). It will become important if you live long enough. Don't even think you can chop wood for a woodstove when you are 75. Some men can, but most can't. Don't even think you can warm and cook by woodstove because you reach physical disability where you can't hardly walk safely without a walker, much less be bringing in wood from the woodshed. Don't even think that you can re-roof your house when you are 80 yrs old like you did when you were 35. Don't even think that you can climb stairs even twice a day, much less back and forth. Don't even think that you can keep a 2 acre lot mowed, much less a 50 acre piece. You just can't. My Dad was in excellent physical shape for 83 yrs old but then died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism. He heated with a woodstove and did all his own cutting, splitting, stacking and lugging. The year before he died, his grandson had to help him chainsaw, split and stack wood. But he was losing his eyesight with glaucoma and was losing his balance so he had gotten to the point that he would not be able to do the cutting and lugging of the wood another year. Not one more year. And he was exceptional. Most men start having to slow down in their 60's. So, while you are in your 50's assess your position and then make your changes before you are too old to make the changes. Don't procrastinate and don't think it can't happen to you. If you live in a 2 story house, sell it and move to a 1 story. Or make sure you have a main level bedroom and full bath. Because, if you live long enough, you will not be able to use the stairs. If you have a lot of stairs to get from your car to your house (such as parking your car in a basement and having to go upstairs, or having more than 2-3 steps up to your front or back door), put your house up for sale. Make sure you have a step-in shower with seat instead of a bathtub. If you have a lot of yearly maintenance on your house such as cleaning chimneys, gutters, pressure washing, water sealing big decks and wooden privacy fences, pools, painting, etc, etc... you'd better consider that you won't be able to do these things in 10-15 yrs and will have to pay to have someone do them for you. Can you afford it? Even my annual spring cleaning, I can't do myself any more. I can't wash the windows, wash the walls, move furniture around, pressure wash the porch and decks, clean the garage, etc. If you have too much yard work to do, consider if you can't do it any more. Can you afford to pay someone else? If not, you'd better put your house up for sale. Two years ago, we downsized due to all of these things. We had our "dream home" and it was 3,000 sq ft and we'd done a lot of remodeling. We thought it was our forever home. But we simply couldn't physically, and mentally, cope with so much. The move was one of the hardest things I've ever done. We had to have help to move furniture and heavy things. The first time ever where we HAD to have help. I can pack and unpack boxes but lifting them is another thing. Then there is all the emotional turmoil and anxiety that comes with moving and, especially, downsizing. You don't believe it when you are young. But the older you get, the harder it is emotionally when everything is turned upside down (like moving). It's hard to make decisions and choices. What do you let go of? Do you have a yard sale? Do you donate? Do you just take a truckload to the dump? "That was my Mother's, how can I let it go? That was my great grandmother's, how do I let it go? I thought I would save that for the children but they don't seem to care". The stuff that is precious to me is worthless to everyone else which is very depressing. Who do you call for new internet service? When do you call the power company to get service turned off at old home and new service turned on for new home? How far ahead do you to schedule water turn off/on? Did you remember to fill out the change address form for .... (I thought I had, I'm very organized, but I had managed to miss a very important one.) Don't forget the pets, did you get new address tags and change the contact info with the microchipping company? Etc. The older we are, the harder it is to make a move, change our habits, find things we packed in the move, and get all the ducks in a row, etc. Such a large adjustment is mentally exhausting and overwhelming. (If your elderly parents are facing a move, take this into consideration and be extra helpful and sweet to them.) PLEASE take my advice and think of these things while you are in your 50's and plan ahead for aging in your home. Two years ago I was 59 and I almost was past doing it. Next time, if I have to move again, someone will have to do it for me. So, when you hit 50, take time, with your spouse, to imagine yourself as almost helpless, physically and/or mentally. Then look around you and ask yourself... If my knees go out, can I still live in this house? If I get dementia, can I stay in my home and for how long? If I get arthritis or Parkinson's can I manage to get around in my house safely? Do I have family close enough to help me and keep a check on me? What if I have to have a hip replacement or rotator cuff surgery (my husband just had that and he couldn't believe how hard and painful it was, imagine a replacement!). For instance, when we lived on a lake in NC, we were 40 mins from our family and hospital. My husband got meningitis and spent a week in the hospital (he was in his 40's!). The drive to and from the hospital was grueling for me when you are already exhausted from staying at the hospital around the clock. I had to do it to take a shower and take care of the animals. When he came home, what if he had needed his brothers to help him in and out of the bathtub, because I can't lift him? We didn't have a shower with a seat in it so how do you get in and out of a tub if you can't lift yourself? And his brothers lived 40 mins away. So we put that house up for sale and moved into town. In our current home (the one we downsized to) we deliberately looked for a place 10 mins from the hospital, our doctors and one of his brothers. We have lots of other family in town, just farther away. We have nieces, nephews, siblings and in-laws, grand nieces and grand nephews so we have a lot of family help if we need it now. I told them, even if it's just a few mins of your time, please take turns and call and check on us. With so many in the family, you can play round-robin and take turns calling to check on Uncle Stan and Aunt Sharon, LOL. If we don't answer, give it an hour and try again. If we still don't answer, a quick trip. I had an uncle who had Parkinson's disease. He was in his late 60's. One day he fell in his home (he lived alone and his son was in college) and he laid there for 16 hours unable to move until his son became concerned enough to call a neighbor who found him. I only lived 10 mins away from him and could have helped him if I had known. I assumed his son was keeping daily tabs and that was a bad assumption. He's young and was away from home at college. I should have been calling him daily too. That taught me a lesson. Have backup! You never know if it will, or won't happen to you, but try to plan ahead while you still have abilities and settle in a place that can accommodate the worst case scenario. That scenario (worst case) changes as you age. Don't procrastinate, when you reach 50, start thinking ahead and plan for it. Then do it.

Sharon, Fantastic advice. Thank you for taking the time to type it all out. I am 78 now, and have been fantastically fit all my life. In the last two years I was diagnosed with leukemia and COPD. After my dog died I could not replace her, because I simply cannot hike like that anymore. I have outlived all my family. I am alone. I find myself relying more and more on social services, they drive me for hospital stays, make small repairs and do yardwork. I have relocated to a small mobile home on a small lot. When you are young, fit and active, you do not believe it will ever happen to you.

I love the way you turn “the hard way” into the “best off-grid way”. You use what new and old technology provides but utilize older principles whenever possible. Hey Shawn and others, someday in the future when you may opt for laying chickens.. keep in mind a preserving process for egg storage called water glassing. Found the title on KZbin. Can store fresh, non store bought, unwashed eggs in a crock or 5gal covered pail of water and some ground powder (name escapes me) for the moment.. but definitely a great idea for anybody blessed to live off grid.

Wow. Great progress! I hope before snow flies, that you’ll tie a rope from your cabin down to the greenhouse, to avoid getting lost in a whiteout blizzard. My gpa tied a high rope from their house to the barn, during the depression, then in winter, he also had the line full of jack rabbits he’d shot and hung there to freeze, till my G’ma took one down, dropped it in a pail of skim milk overnight and fried it the next day. Looks like you could stash a couple of canoes under the front porch in winter. Way to go!
