So what I love about this movie is the actor who plays Smiley is actually a native Maori from New Zealand, and he's constantly cast to play a VARIETY of ethnic people and he always does his research on their dialects and culture to make sure he's portraying these people as accurately as possible. Blew my mind when I saw a supercut of his roles over the years.

Random tidbit in case you missed it: Eva Mendes is not Alonzo's wife and that apartment is not his house. She's his mistress and he most likely pays for her and his illegitimate son to live there and only stops by when he wants sexual favors. I suspect it's possible he may have some sort of leverage over her regarding citizenship. I grew up in LA and transactions like that are very real.

And I gotta give credit to Ethan Hawke for playing off him so well, as the innocent rookie. The pair-up really kind of subverts the buddy cop trope with the whole "what if your partner was crooked?" angle. Great film. You should check out 'Man on FIre' and 'The Equalizer' as well. Denzel's a freaking genius. You see so many sides of Alonzo throughout the course of the movie and yet they're all so seamlessly apparent as aspects of one man's persona. On top of that you never get the sense that he's emulating anyone. He basically conjured up a whole nightmare of a psyche from scratch. It's not a simple one either. It's clear by the finale that his main obsession is control and that losing it is what finally breaks him, which is standard for movie villains, but the aggressive moralizing he does and the subtle hints that he was once a young idealist himself make him a far more interesting character.

K ow which lines you will not cross.

A sticking point I always had about this movie was Jake having the wallet being to convenient. Then I read a article and watch a review that explained it wasn't convenient at all. Denzel's character has a plan but he's also improvisational. The first hint of this is when he tells Jake to grab the menu off the window shield. He then uses that menu as a fake warrant. When he goes over Rogers house the last thing he ask is what's he doing the rest of the day. Had Roger said he wouldn't be there then he probably had a backup plan to rob someone else he knew or he could have just broken in his house anyway. When he robbed the sandman he had to get the info from snoop's character. Anyway the main point is he originally wasn't planning on killing Jake however once he began to realize Jake could be a problem he begans to think I gotta have a backup plan to kill him if I have to. So when Jake saves the girl & he ask her who are her people & she tells them he instantly knows who they are & automatically thinks I can use them to kill Jake. Even when Jake survives he still is trying to get out of it. From the beginning of the movie to the end he's still scheming.

Antoine Fuqua as an filmmaker. Washington & Hawke's onscreen chemistry. So much put into making this a modern classic. I watched the Academy Awards when Denzel won his oscar, Halle Berry won hers for Monster's Ball and the late, Sidney Poitier was honored for his work (what a night). 15 years later, there was a tv series on CBS. Somewhat different than the movie. One season, 13 episodes, Bill Paxton in the lead before he passed away and Fuqua was one of the executive producers. Washington & Fuqua teamed up again later for The Equalizer film series. First 2 films were great (must watch) and part 3 is on the way.

I wish you could have been able to see the deleted scenes. One that was removed that I wish you could have seen is at the end and one you can find here in youtube. The scene is right after Alonzo is killed by the Russians and Jake makes it home. If you look close you will see a silver Mercedes parked right in front of Jakes home. That Mercedes belonging to one of the wise men you see at the restaurant. The scene shows the wise men confronting Jake, letting him know that Alonzo did not make it to the drop with the money for the Russians and ask if he knows where the money is. Jake says he dropped it off at headquarters as evidence. But we learn that Jake actually kept the money. Antoine Fuqua decided to remove the scene cause he did not want to portray Jake of having been compromised and newly corrupt after his "Training Day" with Alonzo and events.

When Alonzo killed Roger, and he was about to kill Jake, he quoted the news saying "A narcotics police officer... was killed today serving a high risk warrant. The officer is survived by his wife, and infant son." Ironically, this was the last thing you hear at the end of the movie on the radio, however the news is talking about Alonzo.

At the end jake didnt have to lower himself and fight dirty. All he had to do was run out the clock and the whole city knew it. The russians would do the rest. Nobody had to face alonzo on his terms, they just had to let him unravel and absorb his last couple blows.

I used to think Denzel was the second greatest film actor of our generation. Now that Daniel Day Lewis has apparently retired, however, I think that puts Washington in the #1 spot - between this, Fences, Flight, American Gangster, Philadelphia....just wow.

He was awesome as Macbeth in Joel Coen's new movie too! I didn't realise till reading about it after that he's classically trained and started in theatre.

Alonso gave Jake more education in the way things are in a day than in the 18 months it would have took him to make detective.

Love Denzel as an actor. He had many great films like Book of Eli, American Gangster, and Flight. Loved his role in Taking of Pelham 123, even though the movie was cheesy imo. Just a great actor no matter what role he plays, villain or hero.

This movie introduced Denzels OG Pimp swagga walking style to the world. Another epic Denzel movie is Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman.. That movie was fking edge of your seat shit dude..

This is a movie that requires multiple viewings, you will alot of subtle details the first time around. When you watch it again you will look at certain scenes in a different light knowing Alonzo planned everything to set up Jake . Down to his dialogue makes it difficult to tell when he is being honest or trying to manipulate Jake. Alonzo is such a layered character

Besides this and both Equalizers, Antoine Fuqua also directed Tears of the Sun, Shooter and The Magnificent Seven remake; other great crime action thrillers are Street Kings, We Own The Night and End of Watch

Denzel looks and sounds the same in a lot of his movies. What made this performance stand out was a completely different personality taking over. It's like our host mentioned - it was the dirty cop playing Denzel. He did fantastic. It was also one of Ethan Hawk's better performances. He gets cast in roles that don't suit him very well, but this one as a rookie cop was perfect. Well done. Great movie. Eve Mendez was hot!

I remember watching this movie in theaters, sadly it was in the aftermath of 9/11 and movie theaters were almost empty. Great movie and actors. I agree that you gotta be a great actor when the audience likes you but you're THE BAD GUY. I put Denzel's performance along with Michael Douglas in WALL STREET, likable corrupt bad dudes.

A truly epic film all around. Exceptional performances, writing and directing by everyone involved. Easily one of my favorite cop/crime films along with the original Dirty Harry. Am glad I got to see it on the big screen as a sneak preview back in October 2001. Hard to believe it's been over 20 years now.

I’m here on my second reaction of yours. Love this movie! I knew the instant I watched it on a flight to India from the US that Denzel was THE guy who would win the Oscar for best lead male actor. And he did! Time to sit down now and watch your reaction which I’m sure. Will be as insightful and reflective as American History X reaction was.
