yea shit was fully planned out from the beginning. that whole drug deal was staged on their part, he gave that cholo that pcp to sell as weed so he could confiscate it and give it to hawk’s character. and that would lead directly to when denzel said hawk couldnt kill him because he has drugs in his system.

Half asleep and dunno if anyone's mentioned it yet, but fun fact, Denzel specifically pushed for Alonzo to have an ending of everything going to hell for him. He really wanted to make sure his character got karma'd as much as he possibly could to push the message of what that kind of lifestyle would probably lead to.

When you think about it, this movie is really about karma. Throughout the course of the day, they meet a lot of people in some of LA’s worst areas. Jake isn’t perfect and not everyone he meets likes him, but he does the right thing anyway, and in the end, it saves his life and those dudes at the end have his back and let him go home.

I love how _every_ step of the way, Alonzo gives Hoyt a chance to turn back and get out. Each time, Hoyt chooses to follow Alonzo instead of leave. Alonzo is essentially the Devil, constantly tempting Hoyt to go further and nearly got him, but Hoyt was “saved” by a heroic choice.

Also the only other time Denzel had played a bad guy was A soldier's story which I still haven't watched. If it had been another actor then I might have seen it coming, on rewatch you see all the clues.

This was the movie that got Denzel his 2nd Oscar. His first as a villain also. Ethan and the film were nominated as well. Crazy thing too is, not once do you see Ethan or Denzels characters in the police station. From the diner to the streets, from morning to night in one day. Glad yall got to see it, Training Day is a Classic. Another film in this fashion you'd enjoy is Dark Blue starring Kurt Russell. 👍🏽🙏🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥

Your discussion after the film is good, because you guys always talk about valid observations about the film, and it’s turning points and character arcs and traits. They way a real film critic would. So often people who do reactions just go off on a non relevant rambling tangent of something the film reminded them of or something that becomes not relevant to the film. I really liked the chemistry between the Denzel and Scott Glenn characters. You just knew they had done some seriously evil deeds together and probably buried more than a few bodies. I really liked how early in the movie you are left trying to figure out whether Denzel is the world's best (street smart) or worst (corrupt) cop.

this was great guys Antwone fuqua mentions every detail that u guys talk about in his director commentary on the dvd so it's cool that u guys picked up on the details of the story. U should see his other movie brooklyn's finest it's similar to training day and even has the same actor who plays jake in it.

Denzel Washington makes Harvey Keitel's performance in "Bad Lieutenant" more like SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a rogue cop of the highest order. Everything a cop is never supposed to do, Denzel is doing that shit. Even cold-cocking Snoop Dogg in a wheelchair.
