Purely psychological move on Kerr part. If he doesn’t race the indoor then the last memory he and Ingebritsen has is the defeat at the line at WC. If Kerr races JI and loses then it dashes his momentum and could negatively affect his mental game. He doesn’t see that title as worth having more than the hype train that will be built off of JI wanting his revenge at Olympics and all the press that he can milk up until then.

If you're an athlete - don't talk shizz about your rival KNOWING you're going to be skipping the next big major meet against him. There's no way Kerr didn't know he wouldn't be going to Indoor Worlds when he smack talked Ingebrigtsen. Don't talk it if you're not going to walk it....er...run it. Noah Lyles showed up at Pre just because Coleman ran the same time after Worlds that he ran at Worlds. I saw Kerr at the Holiday Half Marathon in San Diego yesterday. He looked STRONG coming in with a 2 min PR from the same course last year. Disappointed that his coach is keeping him from clashing with Ingebrigtsen indoors, but all signs point to him playing the long game of building his aerobic strength for an Olympic payoff. 🤞it’s worth the wait.

Kerr barely broke 62 minutes. There are a zillion African runners who could do that. Jakob himself would probably beat him by 4 minutes. Kerr has a nice kick, but he's not even in Jakob's league. I doubt Kerr could break 13:00 in a 5k, and maybe not even 13:10, whereas Jakob could probably break 12:35 and maybe even 12:30.

I agree with Jakob, he was just the next guy. I love it how Kerr was a no show at the Diamond League Final. Yared is the real challenge to Jakob. Jakob has been racing Kerr and Wightman since he was 15 and they have rarely beaten him over multiple races. Yared with his Ethiopian pedigree is better than Kerr. In his last Diamond League race right after the world champs, Kerr claimed to be going for a British 1500 record, but he found out how hard it is to lead and Yared showed him on that day. So instead of going to the Diamond League final he runs that silly mile road race. With Jakob and Yared running sub 3:44's it would have been interesting to see Kerr in that race.

Another very good video, TRP. Many thanks. However, there is one HUGE aspect that you are overlooking. Very few of the top middle distance runners in the world, actually compete Indoors. It requires a slightly different skill set to run on Indoor 200m tracks, banked. It just doesn't suit a lot of runners. Plus, I estimate only around 10% of top runners have EVER raced indoors. Mostly it is simply to complete Sponsorship obligations, so they might compete every two years at Indoor World Champs but seldom compete regularly Indoors. We can't compare the Indoor Tracks of the 1960's, 70's and 80's to today's Indoor Tracks as the tech involved makes them so much faster. That also tends to almost invalidate the results when the "bounce and assistance" of the best Indoor Tracks means we are not comparing apples to apples. Athletes outside of USA seldom focus on having an Indoor competitive season. It was originally used by Scandavaian runners when winter meant 5 feet of snow and running on machines was just too boring. It is the US College/University system that pushes the Indoor season which just tends to add another reason why the majority get burnt out by the College Coaches demands for them to compete, compete, compete. So, look at how many of the top World best middle distance runners decide NOT to race Indoors and you will get a better understanding of the low importance most have for Indoor racing.

He wins one race and everyone think of him as an equal or better than Jakob, he lost every single international race against Jakob until that WC final. 61 Half isn't that impressive for a guy wants to break 2 mile indoor (not saying he cannot do that). The DL final was a testmanent from Jakob to say it to the world he can run close to WR in different events back to back. As far as I can tell no one has done that or even attempted. Shows how well he can recover when he is fit. All he needs to do his run the Olympic final 3.27 or lower. 5:57 I couldn’t disagree more. While it’s true that many middle and long distance runner (especially those coming out of the US collegiate system) are used to going straight from Cross Country, to Indoor, to Outdoor, there is plenty of evidence that the strain that this lack of rest puts many runners through is less than beneficial. In addition, racing is not the best training. So if Kerr has a training schedule for the Olympics that is not conducive to trying to run peak performance exactly for Glasgow, that’s a legitimate reasons. Kerr won’t be the only top talent not there. Many top Track and Field athletes deemphasize Indoor, or skip it altogether.

However, if an athlete truly believes his or her best chance to win Olympic gold is to not compete in certain events beforehand, that's their choice. Why should they care what the fans and track community think? Who wouldn't rather win gold and have fans pissed off, versus making everyone happy and losing?

Also adding that all of Josh PBs date from 2019-2021, and Jakob's training has led to multiple PBs, ARs, NRs, WRs all this year, and he races much more than Josh does. Anyhow,, maybe Kerr believes he's on a career arc that will beat Jakob's next year. Lastly, remember when Yared was asked about breaking the US record at Eugene this yr, and that he wanted a sub 3:46? Jakob told him to stick to him as long as he could, and he would get a sub 46. Well, GUESS WHAT HAPPENED? Jakob handing out PBs and ARs! Yared ran 3:43.97 and Jakob won getting multiple record. AR, DLR, MR, PB

I can understand Josh’s coach’s thinking. Both fully fit (very close to their physical peaks) Jakob wins every time in a race near WR pace. Jakob has better endurance, his raw/natural speed is his only weakness - i.e. kick in a tactical race or race more than 2 seconds outside the WR. Why give Jakob any knowledge (and confidence) advantage by exposing Josh’s weakness(es) before the Olympic final, the most important race by far in 2024?

This Josh Kerr hype is off the charts - he promptly got outkicked by Nuguse in his next Diamond League 1500 following Budapest, despite having pacers in the Zurich race to help him break GB’s natl record, and was suddenly “tired” (i.e., he “couldn’t” run in the Pre Classic in Eugene) after Ingebrigtsen set another WR in Brussels (this time in the 2000m) - probably a smart move by Kerr, though, since Ingebrigtsen just missed a 3rd WR in 2023 in the mile and followed that up with a ER in the 3000m the next day @ the Pre Classic - until Kerr changes his sit & kick style (detested by knowledgeable track fans) to the hammer-it-from-start-to-finish approach run by Prefontaine in the ‘70s and Ingebrigtsen & Nuguse now…let’s just say Ingebrigtsen’s 2023 will never be forgotten and may never be replicated, while Kerr’s one win v. Ingebrigtsen was just another sit & kick yawner

Avoidance. Absolutely. He can win the indoor and Olympics. They are 6 months apart. It's ridiculous to think you can't peak for both. Talk to cycling champions who win the Vuelta de Espana, Giro de Italia and Tour de France within a 5 month period. It's rare for someone to win all three but two is not that uncommon. And those races last for a good THREE weeks at a time. 100+ mile day races. What's 1500M? And by not racing the Indoor Worlds.... He's lessening his racing legs and mentality. It's ridiculous on so many levels. If I was Jakob, I would think Kerr is cowarding out and it would boost my confidence. I'd be ready to crush him in the Olympics.

Jakob is overall the top man. He keeps an amazing standard for virtually all year round, whereas Kerr has to build to a peak which goes down soon after. That's normal for practically all world class athletes it's just the odd super athlete eg Jakob that breaks the mold. In the video it makes the point that the indoor event and the Olympics is 6 month's apart, but the quote from Kerr's coach as saying that if you win the first but then don't make the Olympic team?? (not don't win a gold) does make sense as the amount of world class 1500m runners in the Uk at the moment is insane. He will need to peek twice during the summer.

Smart move by Kerr's coach. If he were to lose indoors to Inge., it would destroy his confidence for Paris. Nothing to do with conditioning. Jakob is like Hicham...not afraid to lead. He makes them race, that is why he is the fan favorite and why he has 3 World Records and an Olympic Gold. Josh has none of the above.

We all have to agree that Kerr is one off the greatests finishers in the world right now, but when you compare his running abilities to Jakob's, you're being kinda stupid, because when you got that Diamond League events, when the pace really goes to higher levels, we all now that it will be Jakob that will go to the front, and someone like Kerr, Nuguse or even else Nordas will have to make the race of their lifes on being able to change Jakob. He is the man that have many age records, that does the harder training program, that is the one that can challenge all runners around the world in many diferent distances(cause you can't forget that he is a double 5.000m world champ), that he's the man that puts himself at the line to push the strongests fields ever and that HE is the guy that is really is putting his name at the all time list in a hight position and in a hight frequency, considering that Josh isn't even a national record holder. Josh is a great runner, obviously, but he isn't the breaking records man, cause this man's name is Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and when people, or even Josh Kerr himself, compare his potencial with Ingebrigtsen's, or even else people compare Jakob with Jake Wightman, they're being ignorant, because the times are there and the numbers of victories too, and you just need to read them to see that Jakob is superior.

It’s becoming a lot more common for athletes to skip out on indoors and limit their races to be able to calculate how they can manage to compete at top for come Olympic time. I highly doubt this is him trying to avoid running against Jakob especially since he’s coming off a world championship win against him and still plans on racing him in Paris nonetheless. No need for him to have his heart racing and be in a super tense and competitive race 2 months into the racing season just for things to die down again in intensity until he runs trials and Olympics. Plus both Wightman and Kurd used the same strategy to beat Jakob in back to back years, so them both doing whatever they can to keep themselves healthy this year will definitely allow them to keep themselves in check and utilize their race strategy that’s already previously worked for them to perfection assuming Jakob doesn’t make any significant changes to his own race tactics that can stop him from losing a third straight global title.

This is one of those people who waits for someone to make a single mistake then releases a barrage of hate. Jakob had a target on his back all year long. It's easier for anyong to plan an attack on you if you have this target on your back because you don't know what everyone else is planning on you. Let us see this guy exchange places with Jakob and he'll know. Pure Brit bravado.

Josh has the ability to run s couple of «good» races a season, whereas Jakob can pull of a fast race in any event from the 1500m and up at any time and day of the year… Ridiculous, then, that Kerr is trash talking Jakob because Jakob has the guts and talent to go for it all.

Terrible choice. Life is short. A person could be gone tomorrow, This is something never enters most peoples minds. They do not take time to take it all in when it comes to events in their lives. Your next event, race, or life experience could be your last especially at the world level. Even if you dont show up to win but instead show up and treat it like training, it is still great just to be there as most runners never get the chance.

We can't actually compare kerr and jakob. Jakob has lost rarely, he is a generational talent. Whereas kerr is an average trash talking endurance middle distance runner. Jakob crushes him at every single distance. jakob has literally 10x international medals compared to kerr. Kerr in his whole career cannot achieve even half of what jakob has achieved in the early stages of his career.
