Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Ten years ago my wife and I had a discussion. She and I agreed that I had to get out of the corporate world and pursue my dream as an artist. So, I quit my day job, went back to school and started my own business as a photographer. I was never comfortable working 8-5 but it took me a long time to realize that I didn’t fit the corporate mold. After going back to school I’d literally wake up in the middle of the night in a panic because I had walked away from a steady paycheck. Now I am thrilled that I am doing what I was put in the earth to do, create.

The one thing about being an artist that's perfectly touched on in this video is that people will try to tell you how to do something, and even try to prevent you from taking a risk by telling you it won't work out. I've dealt with this way too much in my journey as an artist, people telling em that it'll only end in failure, and the best thing you can do is persevere because you're passionate about being an artist. They will never understand, and that's fine.

Well, when 90% of artists fail, go broke, can’t compete, quit or lack the talent, that makes the naysayers right just about all the time. The most profitable advice for anyone new to the industry is this: quit.

Being diagnosed with ADHD later in life, was a blessing because before I thought I was a looser that just could not do the same things others could. I made my 1st and only youtube video as of yet about drawing a figure. I rambled on and it became about ADHD and the struggles I had just to get this image/ video done along with ALL of my struggles. I posted it kinda forgetting how personal I went. I was just happy I finished SOMETHING! Then after I realized what I did I became scared... especially since I didn't see any response nor likes. Then weeks later I finally received a few, then a few comments and people were very thankful for me having the courage to come forth with something so personal. They spoke of how they are glad they are not the only ones and this was a common response and I was floored. It changed my "why," as Simon Sinek calls it, to "Helping others get to a better place in life with their struggles through my art and personal stories." Something like that but it was refreshing and I have another video coming soon!

This makes me think about how everyone's judgment on artistic endeavors becomes a kind of censorship for the artist until the art is shut down and the artist becomes paralyzed but can look for avenues of joining the group and being accepted. However, the artist has to not GAF, and seek acceptance only by peers who also don't GAF.

Another great video... AND discussion! Right off... The first thing I thought about was all the times I've gotten into worse trouble by LISTENING to other people. The take-away from those experiences is simple enough. When you formulate your plan to do something, FOLLOW that plan. It's alright to take advice "under advisement"... fine. It doesn't mean you should derail everything you've been working on, just to suit whatever so-and-so thinks... AND maybe I am Contrarian. I can live with that. I'm usually working on something more complicated, time-consuming, and intricate than it looks "at the surface level" anyway... BUT good ol' so-and-so has to come along, and let's face it. EVERYBODY is a critic. Worse yet, NOTHING is impossible for a jack-ass too lazy to get up and do it. I've been assured my structural integrity would fail at the least strain on a cabinet I was building, but they didn't know that thing they were looking at was only a small component of a much larger engineering complex of cabinetry... Had I derailed that whole thing just to satisfy "the so-and-so"... I'd have over-engineered a massive over-budget mess that would've weighed nearly a ton more than necessary. It would've been a disaster. SO as politely as possible, I assured them, that "Id take their thoughts under advisement" and continued doing what I knew to do. Obviously, they were pissed... but I finished the project and got paid well... and another contract from the client's family. Earlier, I'd been assured my "easy math" solution couldn't possibly be as simple as that and work... AND I sweated over it enough to stop production and go back to a computer... Build a spread-sheet full of all the proper "engineering math" so step by step, I could check all the numbers... ...AND a week behind schedule, I found out that my "easy math" version got within 0.05% of the HARD math, real engineering stuff, straight out of the textbooks... BUT the project was already a week behind, and I couldn't possibly finish without losing money... SO trouble... AND why? I took engineering advice from a college certified engineer... who also didn't know the whole project, but "had to know more than me"... The history of this kind of phenomenon goes back throughout my adult life. If I listen to other people, I get into trouble... and the more I listen and the more I appease their delicate sensitivities... The worse the trouble gets. Folks, being alone is NOT a problem. Sure, I like company. I like parties and fun with others... BUT at the very least, being alone means there aren't a bunch of people getting under foot, getting in the way of production, defeating the whole purpose of getting up in the morning and generally making life intolerable... so there ARE perks to going your own way. ...and the road to Hell was paved in the best intentions. ;o)
