It's because within 5 seconds within meeting Cutie -- regardless if you know the game's story or not -- you can immediately tell that this is a sweet, genuine character. Throughout the whole ordeal, the two main characters themselves didn't seem terribly bothered by what they were doing. It's the fact that you're witnessing a genuinely kind character get mutilated to death.

@@anthonychase6906 It's not that much of a stretch. Fiction can cause heavy emotional reactions in people. As a kid I played a game called Seedling and broke down after I murdered a pixelated character at the end. After you have already been exposed to a bunch of shocking fiction, you eventually get used to it. But I can easily imagine the me from a few years ago watching this video and feeling sick to my stomach. Gore and the like are pretty easy to not take seriously, but the scene of slowly murdering a character while it screams in pain and begs for its life is quite chilling. The reactions from the two protagonists are also pretty disturbing; how they do not display any real empathy or reluctance for carrying out this plan, how shamelessly they tell the victim to stop begging for its life because it makes them uncomfortable. And the fact that they are apparently doing this in an attempt to break their own daughter's heart by killing one of her loved ones.

You know what makes this so bad? It's the fear Cutie experiences being hunted down leading to her prolonged torturing and subsequent death. Taking something innocent and pure and making it suffer for what leads to an empty cause is the worst. I feel bad just watching this.

What makes this moment so brilliant is that up to this point Cody and May had to fight Rose’s toys, so you the players are geared up for another boss battle like Moon Baboon. But then the game makes Cutie the Elephant the most sweet and innocent character, and you’re forced to murder her. This is like the Pixar version of Spec Ops: The Line.

When I was little, due to my medical condition, I used to get very high fevers, sometimes to the point where I was delirious. I can barely remember them, but one that I do was this one time I was convinced my toys had feelings and would get really upset if I didn't love them enough. Even now, as a grown man, I still get emotional over it, it must have given me a complex or something, so as you can imagine this scene was gut wrenching for me. Even the reason for doing this is awful on many levels. Not only are they... y’know... committing a murder on a sentient being as it begs for it’s life but they’re doing it to *make their fucking daughter cry* . I have never felt so immoral in my life than playing through this scene, I felt like I was actually killing a child and it was terrible. I felt a guttural rejection in my stomach when playing this and what made it worse was that it went on for minutes that felt like an eternity and they made you tap y for every time you ripped off her arms. I genuinely thought I knew the true feeling of guilt before I played this but I did not. Whats also bad is that they just move on as if that scene was completely normal and necessary, a scene where the parents rip apart an innocent child to make their own child cry and when they succeed they're HAPPY but when it doesn't work they say 'we are stuck like this' showing they only care about them selves

@Arachnotron If you don't find that un-nerving, and jarring based on the mood set up in the rest of the game then you sound like a damn sociopath dude. Sure there were some adult themes, and cuss words, but they straight up brutally murder an innocent begging being. Before this Cody gives her a hug, and afterwards they show no regret for killing the being/making their daughter cry except that they aren't human. They just move on like nothing happened. If you do a scene like that, at least make it a learning moment for the characters. They did something terrible, they should be showing remorse, questioning their decisions, and trying to do better. Instead they are just annoyed at not being human, and frustrated with the book. It was unnecessary, and poorly written.

They only thought of how their actions benefited them, they were short term thinkers, and they went through with their plan to kill Cutie instead of talking it out with her. If they'd let her live she'd surely have at least tried to help them. Or at least she would have volunteered to be temporarily injured so her best friend could have her parents back. But nooo, they didn't do any of that, and that's exactly why they were about to get divorced. A+ writing imo.

This tone of this game's writing is all over the place, so I guess it makes this stand out more. It feels like a murder scene from Telltale's The Walking Dead where you have to make a hard choice. But then, in that game you always had to talk about those decisions and get judged for them by other characters; there's no remorse or any kind of follow-up in this. What's more, this scene is pretty much murder of an innocent child by two adults, which, correct me if I'm wrong, Telltale's The Walking Dead never came close to touching.

This is what makes it so good, as in great and brilliant storytelling. Puts a hard period on the sentence of the difficulties children face during divorce that is often overlooked as the divorcee's friends and family pitch their own opinions about the adults, but not the lifelong affect this has on the child. There are reasons why Schindler's List and others showing the horrors of human nature are often at the top, most highly lauded works of art. Even going darker like ancient stories like that of Oedipus.

I've been playing this game on and off for the last couple of weeks with my 11 year old son, we had such an absolute blast up to now. I had no idea anything this dark would come up. It came out of nowhere. I was absolutly convinced the parents would change their minds near the edge, or cutie would turn evil and start shooting lasers out of her eyes or something to that effect, so we just pushed through it. But the only thing we did was killing and maiming a completely innocent creature. My son was so shaken up by it, I had to spent two hours comforting the poor kid. He was white from the utter shock. What a strange and disturbing decision to put something so dark and so mean in an otherwise amazing, upbeat, colorful and fun game. I just might have traumatized my very sweet and innocent boy, by playing something that I thought would be a great father son experience. I'm sad and not amused.

I personally do understand the humor, the absurdity and what they tried to do with it, but for so many people, even the adults here, it does nothing more but stain THIS experience. It just isn't the right game for it, to turn so dark and cynical out of the blue. It could have been handled better, they should have maintained the lightness and the kind of humor that makes the rest of the game so strong.

I cried like hell when I played this the first time, I didn't want to kill Cutie at all. The game really wants to make you feel bad when you rip Cutie's leg and ear off. This has to be one of the most messed up scenes in any video game I've ever seen.

We beat this part on stream with my wife and I both basically awestruck and in horror the whole time. They didn't even really feel bad, they were just hung up on it not working and didn't learn anything. We kept going, but they don't address it and still don't learn anything. Cody and May are two if the WORST parents I've ever seen and we're supposed to be rooting for them even though they've got their heads jammed so far up their asses that light cannot penetrate. We kinda just watched the ending since, after that, we might just return the game. Poor Cutie. Worst thing I've ever done in a video game I think.

Call me a horrible person but i completely understood what this entire sequence is trying to show us. They were only acting on what they thought was right. Let's all be reminded that Cody ang May are going through having divorce. They were thinking that this is what is best for their daughter. They both know that their daughter doesn't want them to go through it but they're still planning to do it, anyway. This is perfectly demonstrated in this part of the game. They were in agreement that "killing" Cutie will make Rose cry and break the spell. Just as any, well-intended divorce, are trying to achieve, right? I am not all against divorce. Hence I said, well-intended. What I meant when I coined that are those marriages that well... didn't just work. No beating each other, and the likes. We should all be aware that in any divorce, the child(ren) is(are) always the collateral damage. No matter how hard we try to make sense of it to them, it will always haunt them, in one way or another. Had they wish to patch things up, is a very tough decision to make. It's not stupid to say that (some) couples wished to stay for the kids. Because when you decide to build a family, it's no longer about you or your partner... it's about your kids.

Though I haven't played (nor watched) any part of this game, from what people have said about this scene even in the comments of this video, it looks like their mindset seems to be 'Fuck our daughter, we only care about what SHE can do for US'. If I'm not misreading this, they deserve to be stuck as dolls permanently. And set on fire, the world is ultimately better off without them and a foster family would probably take better care of their daughter.

the idea is that it symbolizes how a divorce can Brutally break apart the innocence of a child. There's selfish implications of a divorce that can tear a child apart without the parents even caring or knowing. In this game particularly, the child is put by the way side for the selfish desires of the parents who didn't even try intitially to improve their marriage. That's the whole point of this scene is to make you feel for the child because logically, this is how she is feeling inside with her parents doing what they're doing. This is truly summarized when you see them bathing in her tears and celebrating
