There is something i noticed, as it gets darker the Nugget doesnt change shade, it just stays as golden as ever, i think the darker it gets, the less focused on your surroundings you are and you start only wanting the thing that you are addicted to.

I think the story goes like this: Nugget 1: The Kiwi passes by, doesn't think too much. Nugget 2: The Kiwi gets curious and tries it: it feels delightful. The Kiwi is a bird, but can't fly: so with the nugget it can. First time is easy, nothing really happens. Nugget 3: Now the Kiwi continues its journey on the ground, until it finds another nugget. It wants to fly again like any other bird does. But this time at the end something doesn't seem right. But the Kiwi just ignores the change and goes on. Nugget 4: Now the poor Kiwi gets really addicted to flying and desperately sprints to the next nugget. Same thing as nugget 3, but with a bigger change. And it even hurts itself. But again it just ignores the change and goes on. Nugget 5: Now you can see physical damage on the bird. Same thing with the next few nuggets: more and more damage and less and less flying, until it gets kinda depressed. On the second last nugget, there is almost no effect and everything turns black, which I don't exactly now the meaning of, but I think, that it should show the damage done to the Kiwi. On the last nugget it just stands there, thinking what it has done to itself, but it might be too late to return back to its normal life. That is the cycle of addicton!

Stages of Addictions in this greatly animated short: First Nugget: Squipply (what I named the bird) recognizes what the object of addiction. Question arise in his head. Second Nugget: Remembering his questions upon the first nugget, Squipply decides to try out this strange thing, and receives his first high, arguably the best. Mainly due to the fact you don't know what will happen. Squipply is still innocent, just curious. Third Nugget: "Oh, it's you again!" Squipply probably says, and remembers his first high with the object of addiction and wants to re-create the feeling of the first, best high. His mind now realizing the feeling can get the most out of the experience. However, after this experience, he gets his first "crash", in which case he feels the ill effects of this object of addiction (now calling a drug, as it's simpler and more likely to be... I know it isn't 100% a drug) Innocence is shaving away, but still there. Fourth Nugget: Looking forward to his next encounter with the drug, Squipply sees it in his future and seizes the moment, getting to the drug as fast as possible. He can live without the drug, but it'll be hard. This is the first sign of an addiction. Not many outside signs, but many mental or internal signs might be showing. The high is normal, but less effective. The crash is more prevalent now, and here on, physical signs of the addiction to the drug can be shown here and after this point. Squipply realizes this, but ignores it as much as he can. Innocence is minimal. Fifth Nugget: Like before, Squipply gets to the drug as fast as he can, even if he can't see it. He knows he'll find it if he keeps looking hard enough. The high is just a high, and the crash shows more signs of addiction. Unsurprisingly, he ignores it and gazes at his next dose right after his crash. Squipply is now in the addicted community to this drug. Getting out isn't easy, if possible without medical help. Innocence is barely present if not gone. Sixth Nugget: Like stated before, Squipply landed right into his next dose, readies himself, and indulges. The highs are now starting to lose effect, and are now just a part of his life. Getting out now is pretty much impossible without extreme measures. The crashes are getting more and more devastating to himself physically, mentally, and spiritually. There is no innocence left in Squipply, he has gone too deep for that, and probably understands that. Seventh Nugget: Squipply now finds himself neck deep into this drug, and probably knows he won't leave. Chances are he won't, so he indulges again. The high, barely existent, but still necessary if Squipply doesn't want to undergo withdraws, which he might have faced before, but are now more and more frequent if not constant unless under the effects of the drug. The crash is the first that could be life threatening for more simple drugs, like foods, and people aren't going to help him. Squipply now lives in a community of people like him. Addicts. Getting out now is a possibility of about 2%. Innocence is replaced with shame. Squipply probably sees himself from the eyes of others and realizes that he is a wreck, but can't stop. Nobody is helping him. He has succumbed to the addiction. Eighth Nugget: The recovery from the last encounter was rough, taking some time. He doesn't run to his next dose, in fact, Squipply probably tries to kick the habit after realizing what it's doing to him. Results, however, are futile. He returns to the drug. If there is a high, it lasts only a few moments, and the crashes are getting exponentially worse. He knows what he has become, and most likely wants someone to give him a hand up. Chances like those, however, are very rare, and you have to be a very lucky Squipply to get help now, either from family, friends, or organizations. Squipply is now infinitely scarred, thus connected, to this drug. It will be a factor for the rest of his life. He is now most likely totally surrounded by people with his same addiction, thus no more judgment, only addiction. Ninth Nugget: If he hasn't died yet, Squipply's gonna go soon. The addiction has gotten so bad, that recovery isn't an option. Chances of over-dosing are extremely high, as Squipply wants to experience his first high again, but won't. Squipply is probably depressed and lost. He's confused with how he's gotten this far, and wants dearly to stop. There is no chance for him, however, he has become the addiction. Poor Squipply. Those who are saved now certainly have stories to tell, and will want to go back to the drug in hopes of a second-first high or wanting to end the withdraws. Fate decides what happens to Squipply now. This is the end of the short, but not the story. Tenth Nugget: The last nugget. This is it. If Squipply isn't kicking the addiction by a thread, he's dead. Poor Squipply has finally succumbed to the addiction with his life. There is no high, and there is no crash. His physical state is critical, his mental state unstable, and his spiritual state is caged away via the addiction. Moments before the final dose, he thinks about his life, and sorta knows this is it. "One last high is all I want, and then I wanna go home," says Squipply. He indulges... Poor Squipply... poor Squipply. Addiction is a serious thing, and this vid is a serious, yet simple but entertaining way to look at it. It makes sense to anybody, even the twelve year old me who saw this when it came out (or around 2014). If someone you know is battling an addiction, or needs to get out, get them help. Whether it be fast food, smoking, drinking, or meth, try to help them. If you are in an addiction, escape while you still can. Future, living you will thank you. This got deep real quick... whoops. Seriously though, addictions are cereal, so take them cereal! Edit: Wow... I mean it took like 45 minutes to compose and get things right... but thanks for the likes and thanks! Hooray for Squipply, may he hold close and dear to your hearts! Wow. I didn't expect a little personal blurb on something to blow up so much, but wow. I've loved writing, and I feel like this is a little example of what I like doing. I didn't expect this to get as much traction as it did, and 2 years later, I'm surprised this is even still here! I'm in college now, and I can say this is almost nostalgic in a way! I remember learning about the "white rabbit", the consequences of addiction, and how downward things can go. It was an interesting little blurb I wrote, and it was done out of complete boredom... who knew! In short, thanks! This makes my heart happy to see people like what I've made, and I'll try to scour the internet for more things to write! And yes, I know his name is Kiwi. Squipply just sounds goofy to lighten the mood!

The first time tends to be experimental. The second time, you do it because you want to feel the effects so you gladly go into it knowing you will feel good. Knowing how it already felt from the first time, you embrace the second with ease, therefore allowing the 'high' to be much stronger than the first because you sought after it. But the little bump at the end is the dreaded come down or hangover kicking in. The come down or hangover gets worse as the addiction carries on✌🏻

I started cry, too. Espessially at the end. I tell myself that he's looking at it, not wanting to take it because he KNOWS it's not going to give him what he wants, but knows that he can't walk by it because there's nothing left that he wants beside it - he still "needs" it. This has been my most of my life. thank God I'm not stuck in that anymore... seriously, thank God.

_I've rewatched this one lots, and my new favorite part is the beginning:_ When he first is walking and just sort of witnesses the nugget without engaging in it. Then he first "tries it", and the nugget initially doesn't do anything. But it's interesting enough to try again. Then the second time it does something new. And it isn't until the third try that he's like "oh THIS is how it was SUPPOSED to feel...." Incredibly good short. So well-made, so deeply evocative and right to the point.

It's pretty neat how they portray drugs & becoming addicted. Your first time feels amazing & lasts for a while. The more you have, the less of that same effect you'll have. Which means, they either slowly kill themselves trying to get that high again, or they start on something stronger.

I like they used a kiwi bird for this animation, a species of bird that can’t fly. They show the kiwi flying when it gets high on the drug, making it feel good. But it also shows a disadvantage the kiwi has because it can’t actually fly, which is landing safely and recovering from flying. The kiwi knows that it’s damaging itself but can’t shake off how good it felt to fly. Therefore, it keeps to its addiction. This was so cleverly made.

Recently left residential rehab, and a friend I made there dipped out of the treatment early, like 3 days after I got out. He died of an overdose not even 2 weeks later. When I got out, I was looking forward to a get together we planned for later in the year, to reconnect with all the friends we made since we came from states all across the country. Our reunion came sooner than expected, at his funeral. He was only 23. Addiction is not a choice, it is a devastating disease, and does not discriminate. This video depicts it perfectly.

I saw this video once on the nofap Reddit community. I struggled for 10 years with a porn addiction, and even now 1 year+ on into my recovery… it’s still so tough. It’s that conscious decision you have to make to ignore the nuggets that is one of the hardest things to do once you’ve been addicted. I still mess up sometimes, and touch the nugget like the bird did at the start which really doesn’t help. I like this video because it’s so dark but it really tells the truth in how addiction makes you feel.

I wish you strength and I send it to you for the moments when with all willpower the endless duration of temptation seems so overpowering. As with the process of sliding into it there exists a way out, but it‘s a slippery slope backwards unfortunately. It perfectly catches the addiction experience on so many levels. The pure, unadulterated bliss of the first time. The "hehe, I know what this is and how it makes me feel". The high that gets shorter and less blissful every time, until it is only a short, faded echo of what once has been. The ever harsher landings. The arc from "Guess I don't need to wait for the next opportunity when I can look for it" to an insatiable craving. The deterioating health. The world that gets darker every time until it is just you and the drug. I like the open ending. Your world is almost entirely black now. And the only sun is the next nugget. You're at rock bottom. Will you...find the strengh to say no?

Its not just drugs or alcohol, its everything that can cause addiction because of the instant reward it gives you on the first tries which you then seek to experience that same feeling just once more and you inevitably fail, its like watching a movie multiple times, you will never be able to experience it like you did on the first time again, and this simple story has so many paraleles with even the dark thoughts that many times haunt our complex minds..wathever

Ok is a big word, i've been in a detox clinic for a month and i'm in my post-detox treatment now. Addiction doesn't stop when the body is clean of substances.. that's when the fight against the addiction starts. It's a long process.. at the moment i have 2 group meetings per week, one face to face therapy session of 2 hours, and one phone session. Once you are addicted, you will remain addicted for the rest of your life, so i will never really get 'cured', it will only become manageable. The emotions and traumas i've been blocking with substance abuse are now all coming out, and i'll have to deal with that by dealing with that, instead of running back to substances which in the end will only lead to the same outcome for everyone.. Clinics, prisons, and death.. In a week i'm hoping to recieve my 30 day clean badge (i had a screwup after the clinic) from the NA (Narcotics Anonymous).. So it's a struggle, but a struggle that's worth it, the other options, simply aren't an option.

Addiction is a serious problem and we as a society need to be more more careful about it.. Than just ignoring it has and could destroy many lives.. Including this birdy... 😑 Edit: omg thanks for all the likes. 😅 please subscribe i also want to start an animation channel.

Addictions is too broad of a word here. Some addictions are good, like humans are addicted to drinking water, eating and sleeping. Other types of addictions are good for you if it's not TOO severe, like a moderate addiction to working out and thus staying healthy. This video is more about BAD addictions I would say. Just saying addictions is too broad IMO.

@@ajsdoa6282 I think addiction is associated with a bad things mostly. I won't say we are addicted to drinking water.. then are we addicted to breathing? I think it's more of a habit or something which is essential for our survival. Addiction is associated to what we do which isn't essential for our survival and still we gets dependent on them and i think it can be described as a mental disorders. i don't think we can describe drinking water as a disorder.

It's crazy. I saw this video when I was a young teen and remember thinking it was pretty impactful, but as time goes on I completely forgot about it. Turns out I became an alcoholic and then became an opiate addict over the years. Now I'm currently facing my opiate addiction and just randomly saw a screenshot of this in a meme and thought about it for the first time in years. I guess I could say it's even more impactful now. Instead of just having sympathy for the addict (the yellow bird) in this video like I did in the past, I now feel like the yellow bird and truly understand the struggle.

Nice insight! Not only that, but the environment and the kiwi bird's reality kept getting dimmer; but with the substance (or whatever the addiction was) it made life feel brighter (even though it wasn't the truth). Addiction makes reality seem dull, and often leads to making reality a nightmare because of who it hurts (us and those around us), and then the source of the addiction traps people in this false belief and lies that it's the addicting substance that is the enticing reality rather than life itself. I thought it was interesting how the environment got dimmer while the substance itself became brighter. A truth that, when someone goes deep enough into addiction, often times the easiest and quickest - and even only - thing that one can see is the object that is creating the addiction and the craving just keeps getting bigger and bigger, demanding more and more. It's never satisfied, which catches us, and our brains, in this troubling hellscape of a loop that is hard to break out of.

I'm currently 29 months clean ( 2 years & 5 months ) now and this is exactly how my addictions went. It's all fun and games until it catches up to you and destroys everything or worse, Death. I came close to death a few times and ruined my life and everything in it and hurt myself and a lot of people. There is hope and we do recover if you want it bad enough but it's all up to YOU and YOU gotta be willing to put the work in and surrender and say enough is enough and NEVER GIVE UP FIGHTING. What i’m saying is anyone affected by this stuff are most definitely victims of some crappy conditions, and are not to blame in this situation

Most of us don't know what "fentanyl" is. We can only assume it's some kind of drug, right?

The most depressing part of this is that the nuggets are the birds ONLY source of joy. It quite literally exists in an almost empty universe were all it can do is keep walking, and the one form of joy it has is killing it.

I never thought a simple animation could make me cry. Watch this was like watching my childhood best friend slowly dying all over again. Addiction is not a joke. RIP to everyone who lost this battle ❤️

This video helps me stay aware and stop myself whenever I feel the urge to go back to my addictive habits. Even after quitting, I sometimes get stressed or feel self-hatred and want to return to those unhealthy behaviors. Whenever that happens, I watch this video to keep myself in check. Anything that gives you easy pleasure is usually harmful in the long run. I hope everyone lives a healthy life.

I love how this puts on display the very innermost core tenant of addiction, and the reason why people keep doing it even though it barely even feels good anymore: *It’s hardly the way the drug makes them feel that keeps them addicted, it’s the vain hope that someday it will once again feel as magical as the first time they did it. . .*

That and to keep the withdrawals away. Long term addicts likely take ot because otherwise it hurts their body.

That's what I learned. Years ago, there was a hot batch of heroin going around the side of town I worked on that was laced with carfentanyl killed a bunch of people. I even found a lady ODed in her car in a parking lot behind work. A guy I worked with that was long into recovery told me that addicts would actually chase those hot batches trying to get their first high again, and that's why so many people died in a span of two or three days. It was crazy.
