I love how this puts on display the very innermost core tenant of addiction, and the reason why people keep doing it even though it barely even feels good anymore: *It’s hardly the way the drug makes them feel that keeps them addicted, it’s the vain hope that someday it will once again feel as magical as the first time they did it. . .*

That's what I learned. Years ago, there was a hot batch of heroin going around the side of town I worked on that was laced with carfentanyl killed a bunch of people. I even found a lady ODed in her car in a parking lot behind work. A guy I worked with that was long into recovery told me that addicts would actually chase those hot batches trying to get their first high again, and that's why so many people died in a span of two or three days. It was crazy.

1 object, 1 area, 1 character. This animation is able to tell us so much with just 3 subjects in a video. I love how everything turns dark except for the nuggets at some point. Symbolising the fact that at this point it’s the only light in the bird’s life. There is too much to love tho, imma send this to myself 4 years ago

Currently 113 days sober from an alcohol addiction. The video also illustrates why it is so difficult to stop using. During addiction there is only the darkness and the substance, almost nothing else. Good thing from recovery is how much you start appreciating the light and freedom from being sober.

Good for you! I hope you're still on the wagon. 🙂 I know two recovered alcoholics (both in my family), and at least two functional alcoholics (one also in my family and another is my ex husband). I don't even know that many people. Meanwhile my father drove my mother away because of his alcoholism, but then because she left him he got worse and eventually drank himself to death. What I noticed about him vs those people I know who recovered (besides his not taking it seriously enough soon enough) is that he was very proud and introverted and didn't rely on others for support during those rare periods he did decide to stop. Leaning on others is everything!

@@justsomenobody889 Thank you for your message and sharing your story. I agree that being able to lean on others is very important. Especially being able to allow others to help you. It may be scary to give over control, or thinking you are not worth their help. For me the AA/NA/CA are very helpful with their 12 step program. Besides quitting substances, they teach a new healthy and compassionate way of living. I hope you are also doing well. Seeing your parents struggle so much. Wish you a lot of kindness and love in your life ❤️.

_On a bright and cheerful morning, one fine day, a sweet little kiwi bird ran out to play! The kiwi had always, for the most part at least, been happy with his life up until this point, the days were always bright and cheerful, and he had lots of little kiwi friends! He had, however, always had a disturbing thought in his mind, the thought of all his mighty cousins who could fly, up there soaring in the sky, all while he was stuck on the ground, with nothing but plains and shrub abound. As the kiwi travelled forth, he spotted a peculiar golden nugget, just sitting there on the ground, waiting for someone to pick it up. He noticed it, but carried ever onward, not bothering to stop, but still finding himself wondering about it as he walked along. He wouldn’t actually stop and think until he came across yet another golden nugget, just sitting there, waiting for someone to interact with it… curious as to never really seeing one of these before, the kiwi gently nudged the little curiosity with his beak, and as he did, it seemed to shimmer, like the ripples of a peaceful river when a stone is skimmed across it, and strange, heavenly sounds emanated from it as it did. And so, driven by naught more than simple curiosity, the kiwi did something that would forever alter the course of his life. . ._ *He gently leaned down, and sucked up the nugget with his beak* _The experience that followed was- nothing short of magical… it was the very elixir of innocence itself! The moment the kiwi consumed the nugget, it was as though the Lord himself was speaking to him from the heavens, it was as though a choir of angels had descended from the skies to tell him that he, and he alone was the most important living being in the universe, that he was loved, and would always be loved, and everything would just be alright now, forever! As the kiwi charged forward, the plains and shrubs transformed into meadows of sunflowers, silk, romance and joy, and he leapt into the air, higher and higher, soaring through the skies and- this was it, he suddenly realised… he was flying! He was flying amongst his mighty cousins in the sky, the albatrosses and the eagles, and as the plains transformed into flowery meadows far, far below, he knew that this was where he belonged. This is where he was always meant to be, right up until the point where it was over as quickly as it began, and he landed gracefully on his feet, and that, was that._ _He had really done it! He thought to himself, he had flew. He had soared through the skies amongst the albatrosses and the eagles, and all it had taken was a simple nugget… so innocent, so benevolent, so impossibly harmless and full of joy. At first he had thought that it was a once in a lifetime experience, that the elixir of life was surely incredibly rare, but it did not take long before he found another nugget, and this time, he did not hesitate for even a second. He consumed the nugget, and the experience was_ *almost* _as magical as the first. He once again heard the voice of the Lord himself speaking to him, assuring him that he was loved, that he was special, and the lovely angels whispered into his ear once more. Charging forward, he took to the skies again, soaring amongst his mighty cousins, but this time… this time the kiwi did not land on his feet, he landed on his butt and bounced along the surface of the ground. It was a little jarring, but it didn’t really hurt, his only concern was finding the next nugget! The kiwi ran faster than lightning, charging forward to find the next nugget, and it did not take long to find it. As the kiwi consumed the third nugget, he briefly wondered how something so benevolent and powerful, an elixir that could literally give flight to the flightless was so easy to find… so common…. The thought made him uneasy, but was quickly offset by the voice of the angels once again, only this time, this time their lovely voices were much quieter, and he struggled to make out their words… he was granted the gift of flight once again, but this time for nowhere near as long, and when he crashed the the ground, his injuries were far more grisly and serious. He crashed down like a bird who had hurt it’s wing, and he was left with an ugly fat lump in his neck, and spikes in his behind. The kiwi was starting to worry now, the nuggets… why weren’t they as good as they were the first time? No! This can’t be happening! It can’t! He’s a bird! All the other birds can fly! He should be able to too, this is how he was ALWAYS meant to be! This is who he really was! He charged forward at the speed of sound, searching for another nugget and finding it in mere seconds. It’s gonna work this time! It has to! The kiwi consumed the nugget once more, and suddenly the angel voices were not so pretty anymore. They were still beautiful voices, but they screamed and argued at each other, shouting yelling, too fast to hear a word, and although he was once again able to fly, this time he did not go too high, and it was over in mere seconds. Despite the fact that he soared only pitifully high, the fall was somehow infinitely, infinitely worse. He crashed and tumbled and flailed and bumbled, and literally landed right next to another nugget. Why? Why couldn’t it just be like the first time? Why did it have to be not as good now? It would work this time! Come on! Let’s do it again! Consuming the fifth nugget before even thinking about the visible damage to his body, he realised that the angel voices had now turned crude and ugly. They were no longer shouting at each other, they were shouting at him. They called him fat, they laughed and jeered, they told him he would NEVER be able to fly, and when he leapt so he could try, all he achieved was a brief moment of float, before landed flat on his face._ _The world suddenly became more and more gray, more and more flat, empty, and dull. The only things that still had colour was the golden nuggets on the ground, everything else was gray, and meaningless. He consumed the sixth one without even thinking twice, achieving nothing but a pathetic jump into the air before falling back down, and becoming fat and ugly, just like those ‘angels’ had said. But it was the seventh nugget where things really went downhill, for by the seventh nugget, he was no longer able to fly, he consumed it, and stretched into the air, begging the gods for a sign before falling to his knees, defeated, and all joy gone. Stripped away when he wasn’t even looking. The world went from bleak and grey, to dark and dismay. For the first time since the beginning of this story, the kiwi did not charge forward. He did not run out to play. He looked around, and the ground, at the sky, and saw… nothing…. Darkness. Emptiness. Cold. How? How could he have allowed this to occur? How could he have been so blind? So careless? So disrespectful to himself, and his own body? It had seemed so incredibly innocent at first, so overwhelming loving and good, and now all the joy in his world had been taken. Snatched away when he wasn’t looking… as the kiwi trudged forward, defeated, his sagging body threatening to pull him down, he came across it. The nugget. Not just any nugget, THE nugget, the very first one he had found, the one he did not consume, the one he passed by. He had gone around in a great big circle, and now the source of his innocent curiosity was staring back at him with a mask of cruel hatred…. It was hard to believe now, hard to believe that when he had first come upon this nugget, his greatest wish was to some day fly….._ *And now he merely wanted to simply die. . .*

The first time tends to be experimental. The second time, you do it because you want to feel the effects so you gladly go into it knowing you will feel good. Knowing how it already felt from the first time, you embrace the second with ease, therefore allowing the 'high' to be much stronger than the first because you sought after it. But the little bump at the end is the dreaded come down or hangover kicking in. The come down or hangover gets worse as the addiction carries on✌🏻

The kiwi decided not to eat that last nugget. He understood it would not make him feel better. He walked past, and started to feel a tad brighter. Then, he walked past another one. And another one. Eventually, he didn't even notice them anymore, for he knew they were not what he was looking for. He returned to full health, and was a wiser kiwi. The end

It seems to me very important how the "curiosity" of kiwi was portrayed at the beginning. In the beginning, he passed by, and looked back, and seeing again, he began to examine, and check how interesting this thing behaves, and only after that he decides to taste it. It all starts with curiosity.

The purpose of the b animation is that kiwi is addicted to nuggets, that is, it shows substance addiction and every time he eats it, his life becomes darker.

Stages of Addictions in this greatly animated short: First Nugget: Squipply (what I named the bird) recognizes what the object of addiction. Question arise in his head. Second Nugget: Remembering his questions upon the first nugget, Squipply decides to try out this strange thing, and receives his first high, arguably the best. Mainly due to the fact you don't know what will happen. Squipply is still innocent, just curious. Third Nugget: "Oh, it's you again!" Squipply probably says, and remembers his first high with the object of addiction and wants to re-create the feeling of the first, best high. His mind now realizing the feeling can get the most out of the experience. However, after this experience, he gets his first "crash", in which case he feels the ill effects of this object of addiction (now calling a drug, as it's simpler and more likely to be... I know it isn't 100% a drug) Innocence is shaving away, but still there. Fourth Nugget: Looking forward to his next encounter with the drug, Squipply sees it in his future and seizes the moment, getting to the drug as fast as possible. He can live without the drug, but it'll be hard. This is the first sign of an addiction. Not many outside signs, but many mental or internal signs might be showing. The high is normal, but less effective. The crash is more prevalent now, and here on, physical signs of the addiction to the drug can be shown here and after this point. Squipply realizes this, but ignores it as much as he can. Innocence is minimal. Fifth Nugget: Like before, Squipply gets to the drug as fast as he can, even if he can't see it. He knows he'll find it if he keeps looking hard enough. The high is just a high, and the crash shows more signs of addiction. Unsurprisingly, he ignores it and gazes at his next dose right after his crash. Squipply is now in the addicted community to this drug. Getting out isn't easy, if possible without medical help. Innocence is barely present if not gone. Sixth Nugget: Like stated before, Squipply landed right into his next dose, readies himself, and indulges. The highs are now starting to lose effect, and are now just a part of his life. Getting out now is pretty much impossible without extreme measures. The crashes are getting more and more devastating to himself physically, mentally, and spiritually. There is no innocence left in Squipply, he has gone too deep for that, and probably understands that. Seventh Nugget: Squipply now finds himself neck deep into this drug, and probably knows he won't leave. Chances are he won't, so he indulges again. The high, barely existent, but still necessary if Squipply doesn't want to undergo withdraws, which he might have faced before, but are now more and more frequent if not constant unless under the effects of the drug. The crash is the first that could be life threatening for more simple drugs, like foods, and people aren't going to help him. Squipply now lives in a community of people like him. Addicts. Getting out now is a possibility of about 2%. Innocence is replaced with shame. Squipply probably sees himself from the eyes of others and realizes that he is a wreck, but can't stop. Nobody is helping him. He has succumbed to the addiction. Eighth Nugget: The recovery from the last encounter was rough, taking some time. He doesn't run to his next dose, in fact, Squipply probably tries to kick the habit after realizing what it's doing to him. Results, however, are futile. He returns to the drug. If there is a high, it lasts only a few moments, and the crashes are getting exponentially worse. He knows what he has become, and most likely wants someone to give him a hand up. Chances like those, however, are very rare, and you have to be a very lucky Squipply to get help now, either from family, friends, or organizations. Squipply is now infinitely scarred, thus connected, to this drug. It will be a factor for the rest of his life. He is now most likely totally surrounded by people with his same addiction, thus no more judgment, only addiction. Ninth Nugget: If he hasn't died yet, Squipply's gonna go soon. The addiction has gotten so bad, that recovery isn't an option. Chances of over-dosing are extremely high, as Squipply wants to experience his first high again, but won't. Squipply is probably depressed and lost. He's confused with how he's gotten this far, and wants dearly to stop. There is no chance for him, however, he has become the addiction. Poor Squipply. Those who are saved now certainly have stories to tell, and will want to go back to the drug in hopes of a second-first high or wanting to end the withdraws. Fate decides what happens to Squipply now. This is the end of the short, but not the story. Tenth Nugget: The last nugget. This is it. If Squipply isn't kicking the addiction by a thread, he's dead. Poor Squipply has finally succumbed to the addiction with his life. There is no high, and there is no crash. His physical state is critical, his mental state unstable, and his spiritual state is caged away via the addiction. Moments before the final dose, he thinks about his life, and sorta knows this is it. "One last high is all I want, and then I wanna go home," says Squipply. He indulges... Poor Squipply... poor Squipply. Addiction is a serious thing, and this vid is a serious, yet simple but entertaining way to look at it. It makes sense to anybody, even the twelve year old me who saw this when it came out (or around 2014). If someone you know is battling an addiction, or needs to get out, get them help. Whether it be fast food, smoking, drinking, or meth, try to help them. If you are in an addiction, escape while you still can. Future, living you will thank you. This got deep real quick... whoops. Seriously though, addictions are cereal, so take them cereal! Edit: Wow... I mean it took like 45 minutes to compose and get things right... but thanks for the likes and thanks! Hooray for Squipply, may he hold close and dear to your hearts! Wow. I didn't expect a little personal blurb on something to blow up so much, but wow. I've loved writing, and I feel like this is a little example of what I like doing. I didn't expect this to get as much traction as it did, and 2 years later, I'm surprised this is even still here! I'm in college now, and I can say this is almost nostalgic in a way! I remember learning about the "white rabbit", the consequences of addiction, and how downward things can go. It was an interesting little blurb I wrote, and it was done out of complete boredom... who knew! In short, thanks! This makes my heart happy to see people like what I've made, and I'll try to scour the internet for more things to write! And yes, I know his name is Kiwi. Squipply just sounds goofy to lighten the mood!

I like they used a kiwi bird for this animation, a species of bird that can’t fly. They show the kiwi flying when it gets high on the drug, making it feel good. But it also shows a disadvantage the kiwi has because it can’t actually fly, which is landing safely and recovering from flying. The kiwi knows that it’s damaging itself but can’t shake off how good it felt to fly. Therefore, it keeps to its addiction. This was so cleverly made.

Watching my 22 year old son live with active addiction and on and off recovery since 16 I can tell you that this is 99% accurate. Just missing the final scene - death by overdose or suicide. I've received the "good-bye Dad, I love you but I am going to kill myself tonight" text more times than a father should. (fortunately he always passed out before completing the act). My heart breaks for those enslaved to addiction and those who love them.
