I got lucky and met a kid at my local trading card shop who gifted me Celebi back when I was a kid. I remember him telling me he attended a Nintendo Pokémon event and got it there. I really don’t remember if it was on Pokémon gold or Crystal but we used a gameboy link cable. And back then we could duplicate our Pokémon/items and gift them to friends. His exact words were “And that’s a gift from me to you” as I received my celebi. Good times

​@@nekrumzero8117 Yeah, but even then it's impossible to catch all 151 in gen 1 without glitching, if you didn't go to the Mew event that was only held in a few locations. So it's still not exactly feasible. Only way to get Mew legitimately without hacking is a couple of ways, like the Nugget Bridge glitch. (I accidentally found that one in '98 or '99 on a second game, because I was down to my last Pokémon that was an Abra, and accidentally stepped in the grass before remembering that. I paused, used Abra to teleport, was seen by the guy, teleported, healed up, and went back to fight more. After attacking one guy and almost losing again, I teleported back and healed, then went back and encountered a Pokémon (I think a Kengaskahn) in the middle of the bridge. I tried to keep doing it, and eventually found Mew as well. (Along with others like Lapras and Gengar). I can't remember if that's exactly how it went, it's been a long time. But it blew my mind at the time. Same with discovering MissingNo at Cinnabar by myself.

Even in the original Game Boy Color release, the quest was actually fully translated into English and could be triggered by just using a GameShark to place the GS Ball into your inventory. The game only checks for whether you HAVE the ball, not how you got it.

(Gotta pay bills. Aka being an adult) Not even gonna even mention the mythical Pokemon from Gen 9 because they’re practically given to you at this point. “New update everyone! Here a mythical Pokémon you don’t have to search for or do extremely difficult events”example mew and celebi events. There was no kid in 1996-2002 that had a damn cellphone to do this event unless you were high middle class or rich. Plus almost every parent was telling their kids in that time period “you don’t need a cellphone. You’re in elementary school.” That’s the main reason it took 17 years to find a celebi. At that time the 4th Pokemon movie was released and I honestly thought that celebi was a Pokémon made just for the movie.

I treated myself to a 3ds xl at the beginning my 2nd year of college, along with 3 game cartilages, being Pokémon Y, super mario 3d world & nascar racing.. i loved it so much 🥰 when i got it.. i felt so much joy i couldn't even sleep.. it was one of the best days of my life.. unfortunately tho i had to leave it behind at home a year a go because of the war (i am Sudanese, i used to live at the capital) at least i enjoyed it for a good 4 years, i even home-brewed it. Now i just play on my phone with an emulator.. but it just doesn't feel as good, it takes a lot of joy out of it 💔 I hope that at some point in the future i will get my hands on another console and play some of the nostalgic games i loved so much 🙂

Same for most. My brothers and I got our Mews at an event in London in the year 2000, at the Millennium Dome (now the O2 Arena). My first younger brother lost his Mew when our cousin started a new file and saved over his existing one. I think I lost mine to a save corruption. We never got Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, or Manaphy without a cheat device. Some of these events either come to the UK or weren't that widely advertised. Fortunately, for most of these games, you can still catch the mythicals via glitching or exploits

The game pretty much spells out that it's a shrine to Celebi. I don't know in how many words it's said, but it's no mystery. I did hope that beating all the gym leaders and completing the Pokedex would result in an event at the shrine where you could catch Celebi, so it's nice to know 10 year old me was mostly right, despite hours of wandering around Ilex trying to figure out what to do with the shrine never knowing how futile it was.

Actually celebi was ready in crystals code when it initially came out. You can prox the encounter without needing an action replay. There’s a video floating around that shows how to dump certain items in the pc and then proc the coin case glitch to get any Pokémon.

Actually, there was a rumour that this shrine had Celebii before Crystal was even released when Celebi was still until development (Celebi was only in the base game data back then). So, Gamefreak listened to rumours and made Celebii appearing there in that shrine as the rumours wanted it to be.

Actually in the games (G/S, and also in Crystal), there are clues to it: An old lady before entering Ilex Forest says: "The FOREST is watched over by its protector. Stay out of mischief!" The Shrine says: "ILEX FOREST SHRINE... It's in honor of the forest's protector..." Then a young lady in the forest exit says: "Did you see the shrine honoring the protector? It watches over the FOREST from across time. I think that it must be a grass-type pokemon" So even if the shrine had no purpose initially, that doesn't mean that the devs weren't planning on using it. It was clearly a shrine to Celebi from the beggining.

Back in the Days there was a magazine, that supplied us german kids with all kinds of information. And we knew already before crystals Release, that this shrine and the gs ball would summon celebi. That is why I bought crystal. Just how to obtain this GS ball was never mentioned until i found how on the internet. I tried basically everything, even winning streaks of 50 battles on battle tower. In past it was easier, cause you could use Lugia, Ho-oh and Mewtwo.

I think these type of unique and rare events give Pokemon a bit of mystery in comparison to the newer games. I feel like there really isn't a concept of rarity anymore simply because you can manipulate odds for even shiny Pokemon nowadays to make it easy. @@sorcererCermet yep! Just have to beat the elite 4. Just the johto side. It’s a long hunt though. But it’s guaranteed 5IV atleast. Can even get 6IV if you’re really lucky, as the 6th will be randomized. (Can also abuse the gen 2 duplication glitch to guarantee it. Each clone has different IV spreads for some reason) and the event is only available in crystal. Not gold or silver.

I didn't know that about the crystal. I remember buying Gold or Silver on the 3DS, and it coming with a code to put Celebii in my Ultra Sun. To this day that was my favorite playthrough of a pokemon game.

Maybe not the exact same celebi event but there was a long list of drops available through a pokemon kiosk that in its run included 5 celebi drops, legendaries and their shiny variants, plus a list of pokemon with special moves (honorable mention to splash snorlax) so...

I played Crystal for the first time recently on my 3DS and I thought the Celebi event was just a thing that happened as part of the game's story. I remember there being an event for the GS ball exclusive to Japan but I didn't realize until now just how difficult it was to do it. Gamefreak really is the most anti-consumer dev company out there.

I remember playing the Japanese crystal version back in the day on my game boy color. It was pirated, but a copy, not modded cartridge. But it had a bad battery and the day/night cycle was a little bugged, One day I realized that I had the GS ball with me, and triggered the celebi event (ofc after hearing the rumors). Got it to trigger again on a second run by messing with game time in the center where you were supposed to go online. Good old days!

In Gen 2 you played in Johto, did the 8 badges there and did the elite 4 there. After that you can go to Kanto from Gen 1 and get the 8 badges there, after which you can fight the character from Gen 1, Red, as the final battle.
