I'm not a speedrunner at all, so this is a more casual opinion, but while I'm not sure about ghosts I personally don't see an issue with metronomes at all. It's simply a tool to help with timing and tempos. It's pretty customizable these days and now comes as a ton of downloadable apps, but the fundamental use is still the same. For example: I play a violin and using a metronome is extremely common. What is does is help me keep a steady tempo, sound with certain notes, and I can slowly practice at higher and higher speeds until I get to where I want/need to be. What it doesn't do is magically give me the ability to do any of that and still requires a lot of practice, which the tool is only used for and not during concerts or auditions. I would assume the same can be said for speedrunners. The metronome only helps players know when to hit certain buttons or move in a certain direction, it doesn't actually assist in doing any of that. Now if it could be hooked up in a way to make the player do things on a specific beat then that'll be a major problem. But helping with timing these extremely precise movements? No, in my eyes that's just finding a problem where there isn't.

1:04 a very small correction: at least when it comes to the TAS scene, 26/32 tracks have an ultra shortcut, and if we talk about glitch skips in general, 31/32 have at least one. Also, 3 tracks have an ultra that unfortunately doesn't save time, so it's a longcut, but still the ultraSC exploit can be basically performed in 29/32, at least for TAS. Besides that, great video! While those are longcuts because they don't save time even in a flap. In cronologic order of discovery: GCN mario circuit 3: it originally was discovered as a 3 shroom ultra ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqnJqKSCbdeamNUsi=VDtRemrfRDjshEKF ), but it was just slower even for a flap compared to simply taking the regular grass shortcut and keep the 2 shroom for other stuff; then, a (non ultra) glitch SC was discovered on the track which required 1 shroom, making the ultra even slower, but a way to make the ultra with 2 shroom in order to go for the glitch SC afterward was found, but it still ended up being slower: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX7Il4CLlquebrcsi=nJcOUeHE1nCeaugu GCN DK mountain: probably the craziest one by far, it doesn't even look like a skip, but while in mid air Daisy crosses the finish lines, then exists the checkpoint, then go around the first key checkpoint (which is very close to the finish line) and landing further, effectively skipping a key checkpoint: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX-noYeimtV8btEsi=LX8kqzTkXaqCGVOBl DK summit: besides the first one (that skips the first key checkpoint similarly to the GCN DK mountain one) all the other skips don't skip key checkpoints and are therefore used in the no ultra category as well, so the actual ultra itself doesn't save time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaebp2Wsn9eGrbcsi=cnm21woLRkNNNPqC If you're wondering, the 3 tracks that don't have any ultra are Toad's factory, DS delfino square, and SNES Mario circuit 3, and talking about glitch skips in general the first 2 still have one (Toad's factory has the box clip and DS delfino square has a super grinding into wall clip skip at the beginning, done in TAS)

Yeah, Metronomes are a no brainer. Ghosts are a slightly closer call, but given that ghosts can be done in game I think they are fine. When you start modding the game that's when you could potentially run into some issues, but even then some communities will allow an exception if the tool in question is easily available for free. Ultimately the rules for any given speedrun category is up to the runner that run said category.
@zym66873 ай бұрын
Nah there's lots of things that aren't programming inputs frame by frame but are most definitely tool assisted, I don't think anyone would argue that using save states to do 3/3 would be undebatably tool assisted despite every input being done by a human. This uses external tools never intended by the developer to be used as part of the gameplay and external tools to create tas ghosts. It's not cut and dry like you think, its not my game, but to say it's not tool assisted is an insult to the definition of the words "tool" and "assisted".

Disagree. The meaning of TAS is tool assisted speed run. If you needed to use a tas to make the ghost and then you’re using this ghost to assist your run… in what world did you not just do a tool assisted speed run? Was the tool not assisting them? Ok great… they can turn it off. Oh, but then they can’t do it anymore? Then I guess it was assisting them after all and the run was a TAS. Even the metronome is a tool that is assisting them during the run. Thus creating a tool assisted speed run.

@@losveratosYou're misunderstanding the "tool" in tool assisted speedrun here. It refers _specifically_ to a computer program that runs inputs fed to it and alters the game in specific ways (savestates/slowdown) to ease the process of optimizing the inputs to be programmed into it. Quite frankly, by your definition I could turn on a cheat code while playing manually, set an insane record, and just claim it's a new TAS, because what was the cheat code but something that assisted my run? But everyone, including you I bet, would rightfully laugh me out of the room, because that's not a TAS. As far as these specific examples go, I think both of them are fine. The ghost doesn't interact with your gameplay at all, and is an intended feature of the game being used in a way that's available to anyone. Even if the ghost was made via TAS, it's still up to a human player to execute well enough to perform the skip since from what I can tell the ghost isn't making the jump regardless-it's just sitting at the correct starting position, so the actual meat and timing of the skip isn't being assisted by the ghost in any way, that's all on the player's reaction time. As far as the metronome goes, as long as no separate party operates the metronome during the run, I honestly don't care.

1. Using a TAS ghost in a racing game. - Controversial for normal racing, but for setting up a glitched run like this, I think it's fine. I mean, is there a better method for learning it? Trial and error didn't seem to be working for even the best runners. 2. Metronome - Should be allowed. It's not doing the work for you, just keeping a time or rhythm. This is different from the recent Karl Jobst video where they were using AI to bruteforce the best limited input TAS, then using a program that turned the timing into a rhythm game. In that case, the programs did ALL of the work. This situation shows why ghosts in racing games and AI should be used carefully. If you take out the skill required, the top scores are just beat immediately and the game becomes a dead game for runners. Not to mention, nobody will be impressed if you had to use too many gimmicks like AI finding the correct path for you. It's basically cheating, not a show of skill like exploiting bugs and glitches that require knowledge and execution.

im not a runner of this game but to me it seems ok to use tas ghosts or metronomes or even like rubber bands on the controller or something. an autotapping macro seems questionable though

I know game communities where skips like this would and have caused outrage 😂

Metronomes are a problem? That's cute. I can understand the ghost thing a little bit, but in both cases it just feels like people crying over details when they should just "Get Gud"

Even if the tool assisted run were considered not legitimate to use as a ghost, someone could simply race against the TAS ghost and upload a non-TAS'd version of that run and then you could essentially run against that. Heck, people could use these different WR runs as a ghost and race against those and you would not be racing against a TAS ghost. I bet semantics are argued a lot in you guys's circles.
