***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

My raspberry make new plants every year and they renew plants from the roots. And after 2 years the old one dies off. I’m not sure if that how yours are. Not sure the weed fabric will allow new sprouts?

@catherineciviello2520 my double gold raspberries plant bought 3 from Starkbros back in 22, the 3 gal pot made 30 plants each in 2023, separated them out in fall of 23 had 90 plants now. Currently in ground on a 30' row I have to dig up the ones that go out of the 4' wide bed they multiply like crazy worse than wild blackberry. I just give them away to family.

I love you guys ,that said this is the only video in all you' ve done I personally find flawed. Berries are not grapes. You will be killing emerging shoots if you plant them as you did the grapes. Also $ 10.00 plant should always go in a $ 30.00 hole. In other words a hole at least half as bigger and deeper that the pot or root ball. I Know you know this so I'm not understanding your process here. Well it's an opinion and observation , Good luck and I hope I'm wrong.

The problem with planting berry plants with a ground cover/weed fabric is the plants send new shoots up from their spreading roots. The fabric will prevent your plants from naturally reproducing. I use several layers of compost, mulch, and manure as my berry bed. Weeds pull up easily and regrowth is prolific. The new plants can thicken your berry patch or be transplanted to expand it elsewhere. I've even sold many of these new plants as starters. Also, when planting your berry plants, the roots should be stretched in a direction that keeps the new shoots coming up where you want them. Bunching up these elongated roots when planting will inevitably kill your plants. This means that your initial planting holes will be oval in shape rather than round.

And the original raspberry plants die after bearing fruit so without the new plants sprouting up, you will not have any berries the second year. They should be grown between two wires on each side. They don’t need to be trellised or tied up, just something to lean on.

Instead of burning a hole, I would burn an X. This way the fabric could lay down to block weeds, but still be flexible for new berry stems to rise. Great video.👍

The cane plants replace the cane after 2 years, and they spread through their roots, if you have the weed fabric they will not be able to replace the canes or expand. a better option would have been either a thick layer of mulch or to cut through in strips instead of holes i would think, like burn a 1 foot long hole spaced a foot or so apart. also the canes do not get bushy.

Agree with this. The other thing I would add is that raspberries are super evasive. I planted 3 canes last year (also got them from Stark Brothers) and this year I have what seems like a bizzilion of them. My plan is to transplant them in the fall to a place on the farm that can handle the over growth of them.

Nothing like putting down ground cover in the wind! 🤣We're planting strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, and just put in 14 fruit trees. I order from Schlabach's Nursery, an Amish nursery that has been in business for generations and just happens to be about 20 miles from me. I use a drill and auger for my planting holes. Great idea putting down extra fabric around the plants for weed control, Thatks!, going to do that here. Looks like a good day for planting, wishing you a bountiful harvest.

Want to add to my comment below: berries prefer acidic soil. If you have not done a soil test, rather than add manure-based compost which might be more alkaline, I would water once a week with a diluted fish fertilizer, and maybe sprinkle a tiny bit of powdered sulfur around plants about 1 foot out. For your viewers, I recommend doing a soil test prior to planting berries, and if your soil is alkaline, dig in some sulfur (no more than 1/4 cup) out about a foot from the plant. I realize you are using weed fabric to lessen your labor, but for your viewers, it would be worthwhile to kill the grass in the area you wish to plant in over the previous winter by laying down cardboard and dumping some free wood chips from your local arborist on top. Not only will that kill the grass over the winter, but it will help create the acidic soil condition berries love. I use free cardboard and free woodchips around all my berry plants to keep weeds down rather than spending big bucks on weed fabric, which eventually will deteriorate into plastic shreds and prevents you from fertilizing properly. Also, berry plants need a gallon of water a day in hot weather, so you may want to run a soaker hose on a timer.

Raspberries work great in wild areas like wooded patches that you don't mow. They also grow great next to farm buildings. It provides protection from wind and a structure to support them. It will be interesting to see how a line planting in the middle of lawn goes. My Grandparents had 10 ft fence they planted with raspberries. They didn't mow back there except a few strips for access after a number of years the raspberries naturalized and reproduced all over back there. We would harvest bucket fulls.

We used free wood chips around ours for 2 years to help ours grow without weeds. It breaks down over time and helps new shoots come through. We just weed eat occasionally between plants to get rid of anything we don’t want growing where we mow. I like your idea of using the weed fabric as well. You could just enlarge the holes by burning a larger hole for the shoots as the plant grows.

Just a suggestion, after the grass dies underneath the cloth, cut out the row about 6 inches on both sides of raspberries to allow the next years shoots to come up. Hope that made sense. Stay safe and God bless you my friends. 🌱🐄🐖🐐🐓🌱 Lisa

You should try the Prime Ark Freedom and Ouachita thornless blackberries. The prime ark plants bear the first year and they are a variety that double crops. They are a little different than the regular thornless berries because the canes will bear for two seasons instead of bearing and then dying off. The berries are huge and much sweeter than some that are more acidic. I grow them in Kentucky and they have thrived even in this clay soil. Prime Ark berries bear fruit at the tips of the canes so never prune them until both seasons are over.

You should use an auger on a drill to make your holes. You can get them in various sizes. I use mine to plant my flower bulbs. I bought a set of them on Amazon😊

Picking time here's a trick we have found helpful. Get a gallon bucket (I had kept old cream tubs) with a handle, either use a belt or tie rope around ur waist. Now u have both hands free to pick. U can have another container to dump into. We would pick with friends & family every year, then go to pump & rinse berries & divide into how many women were there (families). Other fruits I usually took the kids & divided with ppl who help put things up Corn, an older church couple would plant 5 acres. Then whoever came to pick, wash, blanch & bag would split corn up with the older couple getting a full share

My berry path was already there and just let it go wild. Years of leaves limit weeds except from what isn't taken care of by the next-door neighbors.

Kevin, should try a post hole digger or your drill auger. Might save hands from blisters.

Good job! Yes Stark Brothers is the Gold Standard aren't they though. I was surprised about the soaker hose, I've watched for years and thought you only used the drip tubing and tape. I must have missed some videos if you have switched over or maybe this is an anomaly? I'm so happy to see Rosie and Bubba have a new playground area, I know they will really have fun being out there roaming free with you guys when you are out there working.
