This is R.E.O. Speedwagon's all-time greatest song, bar none. This song is a full-tilt barn-burner, clocking in at over five & a half minutes of the entire band firing on all cylinders. And you thought that Gary Richrath's "Take It On The Run" solo was great? I mean, it was, but THIS solo is cream of the crop, as well as Neal Doughty's almost equally incredible Hammond organ solo that directly precedes it. This song...is incredible. 🙌🏻

@Craig27602 жыл бұрын
“Underrated” is one of the most overused words when posting a positive opinion of an artist. For those of us who grew up in the greatest era of rock music, we knew how freaking amazing Gary was. Time and his passing way too soon may have diminished his stature but that does not mean he is underrated. His sound was the standard set for an arena rock show. Guitar technique and lead playing stood up to all others in his day. Stage presence kicked ass. No, to those who have REO records on ORIGINAL vinyl and wore out cassette tapes 40 years ago, Gary isn’t underrated. He stands at the top of the podium.

I was stationed in Turkey (USAF Incirlik AB) in 1982. I was shopping in the small rug shops just outside the base entrance listening to this song on my brand new Sony Walkman. One of the turkish shop owners was really curious about the Walkman so I invited him to listen. When this song cranked up I thought his eyes were going to jump out of their sockets, and his smile was ear-to-ear. He offered me several large rugs in exchange for the Walkman but I apologized and explained it was a recent gift and couldn't trade it. Every time I hear this song, this memory follows it.

The whole song has a take-me-to-church feel to it. The vocals deliver the lyrics like an evangelist---he punches out certain words to emphasize his points, just like a power-and-glory preacher would. The choir-like harmony from the background singers, the organ solo and style, etc. all contribute to that "can i get a Hallelujah" feeling of being in a lively, uplifting church service. Hi Infidelity was indeed stellar. 15 weeks at #1, and their explosion onto the pop chart with 4 hit singles is undeniable. But they definitely DID make a conscious change to move towards a "pop" sound, away from the driving, guitar-oriented rock they had been making. In the immediate sense, it paid off, big time. Hi Infidelity was a monster! But most of their follow-ups have been spotty, at best, but mostly mediocre. Their 2nd #1 hit was a monetary success,, but a bit of a cheesy ballad. Elevator music is what we used to call it. And they have that easy listening/soft rock stigma that they'll never really shake. But they made some serious cash.

This has always been one of my favorite songs of all time. I never get why it's not more popular than it is. It is an absolutely amazing song.

Amber mentioned "keep pushin" as a euphamism for roll with the changes, as it happens REO has a great song called Keep Pushin On, I recommend the live version from the 'You get what you play for' album

The only thing more awwesome than hearing Gary Richrath's guitar is watching him play it live in concert. He was something very special! The entire band was phenomenal-at this period in their lives there was none better at cranking out big, driving arena/stadium rock than REO.

REO Speedwagon was formed in 1967 but had their biggest hits in the 80's such as "Take It On The Run", "Keep On Loving You", "Can't Fight This Feeling", "In Your Letter", "Don't Let Him Go", "Keep The Fire Burnin'", "Sweet Time", "I Do' Wanna Know", "One Lonely Night", "Live Every Moment", "In My Dreams" etc.

....Oh, and if you were geeked on the guitar in this song, please do check out REO's 157 Riverside Avenue. Brace for impact my friend.

This song has brought me joy for over 40 years. Today, watching the two of you listen to it brought me more joy than I've felt in quite some time. Thank you. A truly brilliant song by a brilliant group.
