His voice and guitar is fabulous. Morning Has Broken is his masterpiece and probably one of the best songs written.

He did a wonderful version of it, but "Morning has Broken" is not a Cat Stevens song. It was first published as a Christian Hymn by Eleanor Farjeon in 1931. Her inspiration for it was the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, which is about 4 miles over the hill from where I live. Cat Stevens' original recording included Rick Wakeman on piano.

@@rocketrabble6737 Wakeman wrote the piano arrangement. It was a 45 second track until producer Paul Samwell-Smith (ex-Yardbirds) told Cat that was too short to include on a record. Cat heard Wakeman composing what would later be "Catherine Howard" during studio downtime and asked him to do a piano accompaniment to his guitar track. The rest be history as they say.

@andyrunton

Seconded. “Oh Very Young,” was the song that made me a Cat Stevens fan for life. So bittersweet. So profound. I think you’ll absolutely love it! “And though your dreams may toss and turn you now… They will vanish away like your daddy’s best jeans, denim blue, faded up to the sky. And though you want them to last forever, you know they never will. You know he never will. And the patches make the goodbye harder still.” I think that was one of the beautiful things about the radio. You would hear these songs all the time and then one time when it’s playing you suddenly make a connection and the lyrics speak directly to your heart.

"Oh Very Young" reminds me of my twin nephews when they were small. I used to put Cat Stevens music on to lull them off to sleep. Didn't always work. The older twin boy would just start singing "It's a wild world!"

That's my mum's favourite too. She married my stepdad who I swear, was the living image of Cat. My mum was gorgeous looking too but it was strange. All my friends used to sit and ogle him, much to his embarrassment. Cat was on heavy rotation in our house in the 70s. Yes they are still married. 47 years.

The conversion from teen pop star to introspective singer songwriter came after a near death experience. While recovering from tuberculosis and a collapsed lung, he wrote "Trouble" which sort of shows how it affected him. Other songs you might enjoy are "Oh Very Young", "Where do the Children Play" and "Moonshadow". Although he did not write it, his arrangement of "Morning has Broken" is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.

Ahh, back to Cat. So, I know you've done "Father and Son", "Peace Train", and now, "Wild World". Most people's suggestions here are right on. "Morning Has Broken" A good hymnal. "Moonshadow" One of my favorite songs of all time. It has a Job from the Good Book like feel to it. Coupled with love. I always think of a certain woman in my life now when I hear this song. However, there is one of Cat's that I rarely seen mentioned, and yet, I like the song so very much. In a way, you could even say it is the "answer" to seeing the "Wild World" of reality. And the song? "Can't Keep It In" Hope it brings you joy.

After he made million$ in the 70's as an iconic singer, he converted to Islam & changed his name to Yusuf Islam... he married happily, had kids in the 80's and gave up his career & music for family... gave up most of his fortune to charity... and worked in humanitarian causes for decades... worked to teach a peaceful message in Islam... Like this song and Cat Stevens but my favorite song of his is "Morning is Broken". It was one of the songs we sang in High School Chorus and have loved it ever since. Another singer/songwriter who is really good is Dan Fogelberg in particular his songs "Leader of the Band", "Same Old Lang Syne", "Run For the Roses", "Believe in Me" and "Longer".

Cat Stevens was a teen pop star in the 60's touring with Englebert Humperdinck and Jimmy Hendrix! He contracted tuberculosis, and dropped out of the business for a few years. On his return, he changed his image and his music. As another commenter said, the music of Cat Stevens is a genuine rabbit hole!

Matthew and Son was his first Album and first single in 1966/67. The next single "I love my Dog" was a bit of a precursor to where he would go. People always seem to go towards his version of the Hymn "morning has broken" as being so beautiful and different which it is but for me his song "Lady d’Arbanville" from 1970 is just breathtaking and ground breaking. It is so haunting and almost sounds like it was written in the middle ages by some travelling minstrel.

I've always liked Cat Stevens, but until I started reading the comments I had fotgotten how big a part of my youth he was. I was 16 in 1970 when this song was released. I had started playing guitar when I was 13, and fell in love with his music. I used to play "Wild World" a lot, as well as "Moonshadow", "The Wind", and especially "How Can I Tell You?" Which I agree is one the best love songs ever written. It is in my top 3 which includes "Nights in White Satin" and "Unchained Melody," I love "MorningvHas Broken" but could never quite play it well enough to compensate for the absence of the beautiful guitar piece. Reading thses comments took me back to my youth and memories of the music of Cat Stevens and hiw that affected my life. I bought his albums on cassette tape. First, Teaser and the Firecat, then I bought Tea for the Tillerman, and soon added "Where do The Children Play" to my repertoire. Next I purchased "Catch Bull at Four" and by the way, I'm sure some of you know that "Sweet Scarlett" was written about Joni Mitchell. I played these tapes for hours and hours. Then I bought hiscForeigner slbum. I'm sure if I sat down and listened to all of them I could sing along with every song. I'd read that Cat broke all the rules of music composition. Best axample is probably the full version of "Foreighner Suite" which goes all over the place. I just listened to it again. It was like chatting with an old friend. Maybe that is why his music was so great.

I love Cat Stevens! I saw him in concert when I was 19 (1976) in San Francisco -- a day also made memorable by a pretty epic snowstorm in the afternoon. (Googling, I see the date was Feb 7 1976.) Snow over the Golden Gate Bridge was an incredible sight, and Cat greeted the audience with, "It's great to be back in snowy California!" An amazing day, an amazing concert. So glad he's back performing!
