A singer/ songwriter writer, Lori Lieberman, was asked by a friend to come and see this singer she had been hearing about. She was so moved by the man’s performance that she went home and started writing this song, later finishing it with two collaborators. Lori recorded the song, and Roberta Flack heard it played while on a plane flight, and knew she had to record her own version. This song, as a teenager in the early 80's with already a bit of traumatic history - resonated with my soul. Her voice, I could hear the pain. I related. As I'm sure every generation of teenagers especially, have resonated with songs with amazing lyrics from their time. Roberta is definitely one of the touchstones of my 70s musical experience. I love her voice and compositions. Y'all need to check out some of her duet work with Donny Hathaway. Stunning stuff.
