The solo in the end OMG what your hearing is a guitar battle between Tom Sholz and Barry Goodrrow then them joining in together for an extraordinary duel lead. Boston and Queen and Styx are always so good at going back and fourth from the softest prettiest sound to the abrasive hard "kick you in the ass sound" with professional fluidness.

Just playing through some of your reactions to Boston. Love these songs, and your reactions to hearing them for the first time brings me joy. Us boomers used to buy the albums (vinyl) and play it/them all the way through every time. We learned all the songs on every one. With Boston, especially their first album, darn near every song seems like it was released on the radio. It's good to hear it again through your ears.

Jay.....one vety important part of a band is their versatility.. a great example of that besides Boston is ToTo. You'll get a hard rock tune like hold the line, and then a softer song like Africa.... you'll even get some jazz in Georgy porgy. It keeps your fans interested and you gain more layers as a musician

The most insane part about this song, and the whole first album, is that Tom Sholz recorded every instrument track himself - like every instrument you hear on this is Tom Sholz playing in his cramped basement studio with amps, pedals, synthesizers, and recording equipment that he built himself. I'm pretty sure he still at a full-time job at Polaroid at that point too. Blows my mind, incredible feat of musical talent. I'm so lucky to have seen them live before Brad Delp passed too

I can't add anything to what all the other subscribers are saying. Absolutely an iconic album the studio version performed almost entirely by Tom. Not a dinger on the entire album. As most of the rest of us, I have many times put it on and let it run from track 1 to the end non-stop. It's one of the few I'd happily do that. Okay...so now my real interest in posting this time: I see the bass in the corner; you've spoken many times about your love for the sound of bass and interest in learning, followed by statements that you WOULD be taking instruction to learn to play guitar of some kind. I have seen no updates, My Man! Have you begun that journey? If so, how's it going? As a guitarist I realize it will be a long road to competence, but if you're serious, it's well worth the effort. Please let us know how you're doing.

Back in the 1970s, there were radio stations whose formats were to play 'the other stuff on the record'. LP tracks and B-sides. It was come to be publically known as "Album Oriented Radio". Most radio stations back then were still locally owned & operated, before all the small-town stations were consumed by mega-corporations. Boston had big hits back then (and I liked them), but I didn't buy the record until I heard "Hitch a Ride" on the radio. Breaks my heart that radio like that doesn't exist these days. I actually started my career in communications when I was teen at one of those places. :D This one is still my favorite Boston song, thanks for doing it.

This album came out in 1976, right after my 12th birthday. I had it on 8-track tape. My buddy's older brother had a '69 Charger with an 8-track tape player. He would let us hang out with him as long as I brought the Boston tape. My buddy and I would ride up to the park with his brother and hang out with him and his friends and listen to music. He had a lot of girlfriends and they would get high and dance around. It was quite an experience for a 12-year-old boy in the 70s. What I'm sayin' is you are really bringing back some great memories for me. Thanks.

Not a flashy song, but as just smooth af. Still gets me down about Brad Delp whenever I think about it. For those who don't know, Boston went from huge stars to virtually non-existent in the rock scene in the span of 3 albums (2, really). Brad had financial troubles and was taken advantage of by people he trusted. He also had relationship troubles and was not able to win back the woman he loved. Depression took it's toll, and one evening he hooked a hose to his car's exhaust pipe and gave up on life. RIP dude - you had one of the most silky smooth voices in rock history, and I wish I would have known you to be a friend to you when you needed one.

This has to be in the Top 5 greatest debut albums of all time. They were SO innovative and unique at the time! Very few rock vocalists had the range and quality of Brad Delp. He could belt out the highest notes and then instantly switch his tone...a phenomenal singer taken too young. RIP

I know the organ part of this song also reminds you of Kansas when you hear it so yeah, great album and later, a band, ha ha. Always love that Boston sound. Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston, released on August 25, 1976, by Epic Records. It was produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan. A multi-instrumentalist and engineer who had been involved in the Boston music scene since the late 1960s, Scholz started to write and record demos in his apartment basement with singer Brad Delp, but received numerous rejections from major record labels. The demo tape fell into the hands of CBS-owned Epic, who signed the band in 1975. Defying Epic Records's insistence on recording the album professionally in Los Angeles, California, Scholz and Boylan tricked the label into thinking the band was recording on the West Coast, when in reality, the bulk was being tracked solely by Scholz at his Massachusetts home. The album's contents are a complete recreation of the band's demo tape, and contain songs written and composed many years prior. The album's style, often referred to as the "Boston sound", was developed through Scholz's love of classical music, melodic hooks and early guitar-heavy rock groups such as the Kinks and the Yardbirds, as well as a number of analogue electronic effects developed by Scholz in his home studio. Besides Scholz, who played most of the instruments on nearly all of the tracks, and Delp, other musicians appear on the album such as drummers Jim Masdea and Sib Hashian, guitarist Barry Goudreau and bassist Fran Sheehan. All except Masdea became full-time band members.

Tom Scholz, the guy who played the instruments and composed, is an MiT trained electronics engineer and musical prodigy. He is a certified genius. He is responsible for most of the Boston sound. He literally built the key effects and other equipment from scratch, all custom. He is also an arsehat, but...well...that goes with this territory. :-)
