He learned to do this while blind. He lost his eyesight due to eye cancer when he was 1 year old which resulted in his having glass eyes for all but the first year of his life. He learned to play guitar in a school for the blind but he didn't like holding it in a normal way he said it felt better laying on his lap. He passed away from cancer when he was 41 years old. He truly was a natural talent and IMHO is one the best guitar players I have heard.

Jeff was "discovered" by Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughn at a club in Toronto (Jeff's hometown). Stevie and Jeff played together on some occasions and remained friends up to Stevie's death. Jeff was also good friends with BB King, who called him his "Canadian son". BB once commented that Jeff was the best guitarist he had ever seen.

This man was born with a god given talent, and no amount of practice would ever get you to his level. He started playing guitar when he was 3 years old. Just a rare talent, an unbelievable musician. IMO the most underrated guitar player ever.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct!!! I only knew him from the song "Angel Eyes" until a few days ago when I started reading more about him. I HAD NO IDEA HE COULD PLAY LIKE THAT!!! Incredible is not a strong enough adjective. Like they said, he is doing what the greats did, without sight! Even when the greats played / play, you see them watch their fingers' fret position, while that was not option for Jeff. Such a great talent who died way to young. He had so much more to offer the world.

Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healy lost his sight to eye cancer when he was a year old and was given his first guitar two years later. At a school for the blind, he was shown how to play the guitar the usual way but found it felt more comfortable on his lap. He passed away on Mar. 2, 2008 long fight with Cancer. RIP

Jeff Healey is the single most underrated guitarist of all time. Not for notes, scales, or speed. But for pure technical. He created his own unique style that's not been copied by ANYONE to this Day. Oh and Jordan there is a video with Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughn playing together. Even SRV was amazed

Up here in Canada, we had this boy all to ourselves for a few years. Got to see him several times in small clubs but, my most precious memory is Jeff playing a 200 seater in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 87; Before he started, people are already standing on their tables and chairs, and all the musicians in the crowd are sitting cross-legged on the dance floor in front of the stage. Got to see all that he does in the video at eye level from within 10 feet. Not a long career but he accomplished a lot. He had a brass band also.

Jeff Healey is a Canadian LEGEND. He remains at the same level as Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder in terms of blind musicians. His raw talent is unsurpassed and is a gem to listen to. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant; his adoptive father was a firefighter. In my day, we used to call that, "Stealing Faces." Jeff Healy was really happening in the eighties. In fact, if you're interested, he was in a movie with Patrick Swayze called "Roadhouse." He supplied much of the music in that movie. It's actually a cult classic. His driving beat and unique play on the standard blues rift is strictly his own and identifiable as, what I call, "The Healy Grove." I used to plug him in the cassette player in my '64 GTO and take long cruises. It was cool seeing him have that effect on you guys. He's no longer with us now, but, he will be remembered by a lot of blues lovers.

In some ways , Jeff's blindness is an asset to his guitar-playing .... if you've noticed , when a GREAT guitarist is at the PEAK of his solo , his eyes are CLOSED !!! .... guitar is a VERY tactile instrument , and the FEEL of your guitar in your hands is a very direct connection to the music .... looking to see if you are in the right fret can actually distract you from the emotion of the moment !!!!

Hey, loved your reation to Jeff...he is Canadian and a treasure here by all that like blues and rock. he wasnt born blind but became that at like the age of two, some type of cancer. Im Canadian & had the honour of seeing him live...totally mindblowing. He had a near encyclopedic memory of American jass & blues and a collection to match. Sadly cancer killed him at a young age, 42 i think? married and family, so sad. There is a small Parkette named in his honour in Toronto & i have sat on the bench & wept...he was a real bright light in music, especially here in Canada...cheers & thanks for bringing him to the forefront.

Jeff lost his sight from cancer at 3 years old. He is without question THE MOST underrated under appreciated artist bar none. Jeff’s entire catalog is just amazing. I think I love you too much, Angel eyes, I tried, The damage is done, Macon Georgia blue, Hell to pay… just a few. His cover of the Beatles “While my guitar gently weeps”, for me, is better the theirs.

Jose Feliciano is another wonderfully gifted, blind musician & singer/songwriter. If you want to be utterly amazed, you should check him out, playing 'The flight of the bumblebee', one of the most complicated orchestral pieces ever, but HE plays it on his classical guitar!!! The biggest shock happens when, halfway through the piece, he drops his pick, then carries on, playing with his fingers, as if nothing's happened!!! 😲😲😲

He's done some magnficent covers, like The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", Stealer's Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You", and Jimi Hendrix's "Angel". His biggest hit on the charts was "Angel Eyes". Sadly, the cancer that took his sight took his life in 2008. He is MISSED.

P.S. You've sampled many of the greatest guitarists who ever lived - Jeff, SRV, Jimi... the next one HAS to be Joe Satriani. Some of his former STUDENTS include Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde of Primus... and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. He's been shredding since the 80s, and you can't complete your GGOAT pantheon without including him. "Flying in a Blue Dream", "Dream Song", "Surfing With The Alien", "Time"... there are so many to choose from. (Forewarning - 99% of his songs are instrumentals.)

I met Jeff Healy and his bassist when I was working at Guitar Center in Chicago via mid 1990's. He was a Guitar Center featured guest and we had a "meet and greet" table set up for them. Even though he was blind he still signed posters and photos for people. The Jeff Healy band was opening up for Bon Jovi that night so he put the Guitar Center employees on his guest list and gave us all backstage passes. The Bon Jovi concert was probably 90% girls. Jeff was absolutely outstanding and I felt honored to meet him and hearing him play live.

Thanks to you two young folks for watching this with open minds. The show Jeff was on was David Sanborn's Night music, a great weekly show that featured the greats, like Jeff. It's a shame it was not on the air longer, but this episode was my first intro to Jeff and I went to see him soon after in a tiny club (just before Road House the movie blew up). I sat 10 feet from him just drooling and tearing up. I saw him several times and even met him and the band briefly. Each time I saw him play was simply insane, it's such a shame he passed away. Interestingly, he was a huge jazz fan with a collection 10,000 78 records, and he was an incredible trumpet player as well.
