This documentary was amazing. It's crazy how we romanticize the guys taking speed and doing blow to improve their performance but demonize the guys who juiced. It's all a product of the time period they were living in.

The 86 Mets talked trash, punched you in the mouth, and laughed at you. As a lifetime Mets fan, I am glad I had the chance to watch that team get built and go on to some exciting baseball. (Interesting how everyone remembers Doc & Darryls issues, but conveniently everyone forgets Ron Darling getting arrested for fighting in the clubs).

DP mentions no social media in 86 but also remember that there were no cell phones or cell phone cameras. Could you imagine cell phone cameras and the 86 Mets today?? Wow. But the 86 Mets are one of the best examples of cautionary tales in sports.
@joshuablack7112 жыл бұрын
Indeed no social media no cell phones with cameras no 24 hour news teams & players specifically owners & GMs of teams had close relationships with the newspaper writers so if they had a story they would bury it and if u accused an athlete of anything without any tangible proof ur career was over, it really was an entirely different world back then

So many members of that team abused alcohol, tobaco, recreational and performance enhancing drugs, and the first one to pass on is the clean living Gary Carter. Life, as they say, ain't fair.

"Performance enhancing"? Ahh, cocaine and booze don't enhance your performance lol. Quite the opposite. And the Mets STILL won 108 games in 1986. Crazy.

Doc's 1985 season was the greatest single season by a pitcher since they lowered the mound in 1968. Analytics have really highlighted that season as truly unprecedented. The fact that he was only 20 years old makes it one of the most remarkable seasons in the history of baseball.
@tubemoozful2 жыл бұрын
Pedro Martinez' season was slightly better in 2000
@boxingandbulldogs63412 жыл бұрын
@@tubemoozful it wasn't. Doc's 85 season W.A.R. total is rated 20th all time according to Baseball Reference, which actually would put it as the best season by a pitcher since Walter Johnson. I originally thought 68 because of Gibson's 1.12, but apparently Doc's 85 season surpasses even that. Apparently, the higher mound led to ERA's being a lot lower during Gibson's time, thus making the gap between Gibson and other good pitchers of that time smaller than it was for Doc in 85.

@@boxingandbulldogs6341 I don't recognize WAR (Frank Thomas has a higher WAR than Trout) & there isn't a universal formula for it I can see why some say Gooden had the greatest - he had more shutouts than Martinez (8-4) but don't forget 2000 was during the steroid era & there's an extra hitter (DH)..Gooden would probably dominate the DH like he did everyone that season

These guys need to do their homework. Gooden was not the Mets best pitcher in '86. It was Bob Ojeda who was 18-5 with a 2.57 ERA. In '86 Gooden was already past his prime. He was still good with a 17-6 record and 2.84 ERA but as the numbers show it was Bob Ojeda who was their best pitcher. I think these guys are confusing Gooden's '86 season with his '85 season when he went 24-4 with a 1. 53 ERA. Which was his only Cy Young season and the only season he was baseball's best pitcher. He never came close to being the season's best pitcher or his '85 stats at any other point in his career. He had few more good years but none of them Cy Young award worthy.
